Ikea announces closing date for UK store weeks after opening Oxford Street site

Swedish flatpack retailer Ikea will shut its Plan and Order point at the Stockport Merseyway Shopping Centre on June 16
Ikea is closing one of its shops - just two years after it first opened. The Swedish flatpack retailer will shut its Plan and Order point at the Stockport Merseyway Shopping Centre on June 16.
Ikea Plan and Order points are smaller stores that focus on kitchen, bedroom, and living room planning, where shoppers are given design advice.

You cannot take items home from a Plan and Order point, but you can place orders there for home delivery. The next nearest Ikea store is located in Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside.

Salma Azad, Ikea area manager said: 'After careful evaluation, we've made the difficult decision to close the Ikea Plan and Order Point at Merseyway Shopping Centre.
'In the two years since opening, we've taken valuable learnings, including how our customers prefer to meet Ikea, and we'll take these insights into future openings, to serve shoppers in a more impactful way.
'I want to sincerely thank all of the customers that have shopped with us in this time. Ikea Manchester, a store locals know and love, will continue to be the closest hub for home planning, meatballs and everything in between.'
It comes after Ikea opened its brand new Oxford Street store in London last month after taking over the former TopShop site. The store spans three floors of the seven-storey building, comprising the ground and two lower ground floors, with a retail space of 5,800 square metres.
It is the second smaller format Ikea store, following the Hammersmith branch which opened its doors in 2023. There are around 6,000 product lines in the Oxford Street store but only 3,500 products are available to take home.

Each item is labelled with either a yellow or red tag, to indicate whether you can buy and take it away from the store, or whether you need to order it for home delivery or click and collect.
Speaking ahead of the opening, Peter Jelkeby, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA UK, said: 'It will be an IKEA many know and love, with some new features exclusive to this iconic city centre store.
"Created in collaboration with real voices and with Londoners in mind, opening our doors is a landmark moment following a meticulous renovation and we are truly excited to share it."
Tolga Öncü, Ingka Retail Manager (COO) at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), said: 'Adding Oxford Street to the IKEA map is a special moment for us. This store, on one of the busiest and most well-known streets in the world, exemplifies our ambition to innovate our retail presence and bring IKEA to where our customers live, work, and socialise.
"Offering our well-designed and affordable products to more people in city centres across the globe remains our way forward.'

I'm a single mum and wanted to give the stairs in my rented house a new look – I'm on a strict budget & did it for £35

SHE wanted to give her staircase a new look, but rents her home. So after getting permission from the landlord, Megan decided to get started on the makeover - which she managed to complete for just £35. 6 6 She began by leaving a strip down the middle of the stairs bare, and headed to her local IKEA to pick up some of their £2 Tiphede runners. When she got home, she got started by cleaning off the stairs, before she started attaching the rugs to the steps. After getting them in the perfect position, she used a heavy duty staple gun to attach them onto the stairs. And once she'd finished, the rugs looked like a perfect, professional and expensive stair runner. "Changing the stairs on my private rented property with permission from my landlord," Megan wrote over the top of the video. "Single mum on a budget style!" And she added in the caption: "I love it when a vision comes to life….now I just need to go accessory shopping. "This whole project has cost me around £35 in total. Now that's what you call DIY on a budget!" People in the comments section were quick to praise Megan for the transformation, with one writing: "Well done, looks amazing!" "It looks stunning! You've done amazing!" another added. "What is the tool your using to tack the runners in place babe?" "Thank you so much, it's been a long few days," Megan replied. "It's just a heavy duty staple gun." "Well worth the effort, looks great," a third praised. "That is amazing, fair play to you," someone else commented. "It's beautiful - ready for your next project." Home upgrades that add the most value to a house The best renovation to add value totally depends on your property, the local market and your potential buyers. Zoopla shared a list of upgrades that will instantly add value to your home. Loft conversion - increase of 15% Off-street parking - adds £50,000 to property price New kitchen - increase of 15% Garage conversion - increase of 15% Cellar or basement conversion - increase of 10-15% Open plan living space - increase of 3-5% New bathroom - increase of 3-5% "Gorgeous! Love this, well done!" another wrote. "I work in Ikea... that's great use of the Tiphede runner rug," someone else said. "It looks stunning," another added. "In the middle of doing our stairs - could you please tell me how you managed to get a neat line up your stairs for the paint? "I'm so close to chucking the brush!" To which Megan replied: "Masking tape but remove it whilst the paint is still wet". "I did something similar and I swear trying to keep them clean is a nightmare! It will be a daily task!" someone else commented. With Megan responding: "I have 5 children, I'm always cleaning anyway!" "Came out really nice..." another said. 6 6

Ikea partners with NI Hospice to transform wedding dress section of charity's Glengormley store

The retailer has partnered with Northern Ireland Hospice to transform the bridal section in the charity's Glengormley store into a purpose-built space. Designed and fitted out by Ikea workers, it will provide brides-to-be with a glamorous wedding dress shopping experience at an affordable price. Alan Kennedy, head of retail at Northern Ireland Hospice, found it easy to accept the furnishing retailer's proposal to assist the project aimed at adding an extra sparkle to the big day. 'We are delighted to partner with Ikea on this initiative, which will transform and enhance customers' joyous rite-of-passage shopping experience when choosing the perfect wedding gown or formal dress,' he said. 'Buying second-hand at your local hospice shop or by generously donating items you no longer need, including special occasion wear, is a great way to play your part in protecting the planet, while also supporting local people with life-limiting illnesses and who need hospice's specialist palliative care.' As part of the renovation to ensure products are displayed in fitting surroundings to match the occasion, Ikea has donated wardrobe frames, rugs, curtains, armchairs, dressing tables, soft furnishings, and large mirrors to provide the perfect setting for wedding planning. Additionally, bespoke décor has been crafted for the area, with carpenters from the Belfast branch of Ikea creating a purpose-built mirror wall and podium for brides to stand on before saying 'yes to the dress'. The redesign has been complimented by the Scandinavian chain's large, eye-catching graphics which have been designed in-house to be displayed across the charity shop's windows. The renovated bridal section will allow the charity to properly display its stock of over 40 high-quality wedding dresses, encouraging brides to buy pre-loved dresses and accessories. It is also hoped that it will inspire more women to consider donating their wedding dresses to support the charity. All proceeds from the sales of the pre-owned gowns and accessories will go directly to support the vital work of Northern Ireland Hospice, enabling it to continue offering specialist respite, symptom management and end-of-life palliative care to 4,000 infants, children and adults each year. Hayley Thompson, interior designer at Ikea in Belfast, is delighted to help usher in a new look to enhance the wedding planning experience. 'Shopping for a wedding dress is such a special occasion and one that we wanted to make accessible to all brides in the local community,' she said. 'This partnership represents Ikea's commitment to sustainability and community, providing brides-to-be with a special shopping experience, as well as affordable access to pre-loved wedding gowns. 'We hope that the new bridal store will encourage more brides to donate their own wedding dresses, giving them a second life while supporting an incredible cause.' Ikea in Belfast has a long relationship with the Northern Ireland Hospice, having previously worked hand-in-hand on a project for the charity's Somerton House store. It said the latest engagement is a key part of Ikea's broader goal to provide services that help customers build a better and more sustainable everyday life.

Crystal Palace discover likely date for verdict on European football ban

Crystal Palace secured their spot in next season's Europa League after winning the FA Cup but their participation in the competition is in major doubt with UEFA set to make a decision Crystal Palace face a near MONTH LONG wait to discover their European fate. The Eagles secured their spot in the Europa League at the end of the season after beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final. They were set to go straight into the league stage of the competition but there are now doubts over whether the south Londoners can actually compete in the tournament. UEFA rules forbid individuals having control of more than club to be in the same competition at the same time to avoid conflicts of interest. ‌ Eagle Football - the group owned by John Textor - is a minority shareholder in Palace, while they are also a majority shareholder in French side Lyon. Both clubs have secured qualification for the Europa League. ‌ As it stands, Lyon get priority over the Premier League side due to their superior league finish last term. Palace chiefs have attempted to win UEFA over by flying to their headquarters in Switzerland for talks. But it appears that Palace will have to sweat for a while over their prospects of playing Europe next season. That's according to the BBC, who say a decision from UEFA is not expected until at least the end of the month. The news will be a huge blow to Palace's hopes of planning for next season. Boss Oliver Glasner has already admitted that a place in Europe could affect their transfer ambitions. Speaking earlier this year, he said: 'From a financial perspective, Crystal Palace will never be a top-four club in England. Not with all the other big clubs here and that's not necessary because not everybody can be a top-four club. It's just not possible. 'This club got promoted in 2013. Since then, it has always progressed. Not huge steps. You can be a one-hit wonder and then you're gone. We said: our planning shouldn't be, 'Now we play in Europe, so let's do crazy things', and then everything collapses. We follow a pathway. ‌ 'This pathway didn't start with Oliver Glasner. It started with the new owners in 2010. Very stable, mid-table, always between 10 and 15. And this is where we are again. 'Now, it's step by step. Winning this trophy, playing internationally, getting this experience, and maybe getting some players we couldn't by playing European football. This can help us take the next step.' ‌ Palace have already seen one of their Premier League rivals take action regarding their European hopes. Nottingham Forest also saw a potential spot in the Champions League in jeopardy due to Evangelos Marinakis' ownership of Greek giants Olympiacos. He diluted his control of the East Midlands club by placing his shares in a blind trust. But Textor is unlikely to follow that example because he and Eagle Football do not have decisive influence over the Croydon outfit.
