Pakistan space agency predicts Eid Al-Fitr on Mar. 31
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's national space agency predicted on Wednesday the first day of the Eid-Al-Fitr festival that caps the holy month of Ramadan would likely be observed on Monday, Mar. 31.
The sighting of the new moon, or the Shawwal crescent moon as it is otherwise called, signifies the end of Ramadan, and the beginning of Eid Al-Fitr and its festivities. Ramadan in Pakistan began on Mar. 2, a day later than in most other Muslim countries, and Eid is thus widely expected to fall on Mar. 31.
Pakistan's central moon sighting body, the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, observes the Shawwal moon before Eid each year and announces the start of the holiday.
'The likelihood of moon sighting on Mar. 30, 2025 in Pakistan is very bright,' the Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) said in a statement.
'Consequently, Ramadan is expected to complete 29 days, and the first day of Eid-Al-Fitr will likely be observed on Mar. 31, 2025.'
The sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon is determined by a combination of astronomical factors and traditional practices, including the moon's age, its angular separation from the sun, and visibility conditions.
Muslims look for the crescent moon in the sky shortly after sunset on the 29th day of Ramadan each year.
If the moon is sighted, the following day is declared as the first day of the new month of Shawwal and the start of Eid Al-Fitr.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's moon sighting committee announced today, Tuesday, that the crescent marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah was not sighted due to unclear skies and the Eid Al-Adha festival would commence from June 7. Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar, a sacred period during which the Hajj pilgrimage and Eid Al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, take place. It is one of the four holy months in Islam, with the first 10 days especially revered and considered among the best days of the year for performing righteous deeds. 'Today, in Pakistan, most areas experienced cloudy weather, and some areas had clear skies. The confirmation of sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon has not been received from any part of Pakistan,' Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad said at a press conference. 'Hence unanimously [we have] decided that the first Dhul Hijjah, 1446 AH will be observed on Thursday, May 29 and Eid Al-Adha will be on Saturday, June 7, 2025.' Commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son on God's command, Muslims mark the Eid Al-Adha holiday by slaughtering animals such as sheep, cows and goats. The meat is shared among family and friends and also donated to the poor. Eid Al-Adha is observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, while the annual Hajj pilgrimage will commence on June 4.

Eid break brings Indonesian capital respite from notoriously polluted air
JAKARTA: The long Eid Al-Fitr break in commercial activities has cleared the skies over Indonesia's notoriously polluted capital, offering a respite for residents who throughout the year are regularly exposed to some of the world's most toxic air. The Jakarta metropolitan area — home to about 31 million people — recorded 'good' and 'moderate' air on Thursday afternoon, with an air quality index reading between 22 and 76, according to data released by the Ministry of Environment. The numbers showed a marked improvement for a city that regularly records above 100 AQI and 'unhealthy' levels of PM 2.5, a measurement of particulate matter — solid and liquid particles suspended in the air that can be inhaled and cause respiratory diseases. 'These 'good' and 'moderate' levels of air quality are possibly due to a drop in public activities during Eid holidays, as there has been a marked decrease in transportation and industrial activities in the city,' Edward Nixon Pakpahan, air quality protection and management director at the ministry, told Arab News. 'We are working to keep the air quality index for Jakarta metropolitan area below 100.' Jakarta residents have long complained about the health risks posed by persistent air pollution from heavy traffic, industrial emissions and coal-fired power plants, which have consistently placed Jakarta among the 10 most polluted cities globally. The streets of Jakarta and its satellite cities have been mostly empty since last weekend, after millions of people traveled back to their hometowns for Eid holidays. Across the city, those who did not travel for Eid have been making the most of the rare good weather and clear skies. 'I love it. The sky is blue and the weather isn't miserable or scorching hot,' Jodi Baskoro, a 40-year-old office worker based in Jakarta, told Arab News. 'It's such great weather for those who are making their way around Jakarta to visit their families for Eid.'

Tebuk emir reviews rain response in Tayma
