Pakistan to celebrate Eid Al-Adha on June 7

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's moon sighting committee announced today, Tuesday, that the crescent marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah was not sighted due to unclear skies and the Eid Al-Adha festival would commence from June 7. Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar, a sacred period during which the Hajj pilgrimage and Eid Al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, take place. It is one of the four holy months in Islam, with the first 10 days especially revered and considered among the best days of the year for performing righteous deeds. 'Today, in Pakistan, most areas experienced cloudy weather, and some areas had clear skies. The confirmation of sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon has not been received from any part of Pakistan,' Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad said at a press conference. 'Hence unanimously [we have] decided that the first Dhul Hijjah, 1446 AH will be observed on Thursday, May 29 and Eid Al-Adha will be on Saturday, June 7, 2025.' Commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son on God's command, Muslims mark the Eid Al-Adha holiday by slaughtering animals such as sheep, cows and goats. The meat is shared among family and friends and also donated to the poor. Eid Al-Adha is observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, while the annual Hajj pilgrimage will commence on June 4.

Pakistan's central moon sighting committee to meet today to sight Eid crescent

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's central moon sighting committee will meet in the country's capital today, Sunday, to sight the Shawwal moon and announce the date for Eid Al-Fitr, state-run media reported. In Pakistan, the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is tasked with sighting the moon for new Islamic months. Dates for Ramadan and Eid festivals are confirmed by the committee through visual observations and based on testimonies received of the crescent being sighted from several parts of the country. The sighting of the new moon, or the Shawwal crescent, signifies the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid Al-Fitr and its festivities. 'The meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will be held this evening to sight the Moon of Shawwal,' state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported. It said RHC Chairman Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad will preside over the meeting, which will be held at the rooftop of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony in Islamabad. The state broadcaster said zonal meetings of the committee to sight the moon will simultaneously be held in Pakistan's provincial capitals. Ramadan in Pakistan began on Mar. 2, a day later than in most other Muslim countries, and Eid is thus widely expected to fall on Mar. 31. The Shawwal moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, marking the end of the month of Ramadan. Eid Al-Fitr is being celebrated in the Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and other Middle Eastern countries today.

Pakistan to Officially Celebrate Eid Al Fitr 2025 on March 31

Rabat– Pakistan will officially celebrate Eid Al Fitr on March 31, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan 1446. The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, the country's official moon sighting body, confirmed the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on Saturday evening. 'Pakistan will celebrate Eid Al-Fitr on March 31, as the crescent moon is expected to be visible to the naked eye tomorrow, Sunday,' confirmed the state media. Fasting in Pakistan began on March 2, and today marks the 28th day of Ramadan in the South Asian country. The federal government has declared Eid holidays from March 31 (Monday) to April 2 (Wednesday), according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division. Public and private sector employees across the country will observe these holidays to mark the joyous occasion. Eid A Fitr , meaning the 'Festival of Breaking the Fast,' is one of the most significant Islamic celebrations. In Pakistan, it begins with special Eid prayers held at mosques and open grounds across Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and other cities. Worshippers gather in large numbers, dressed in 'shalwar kameez', traditional clothing often embroidered with intricate patterns, to perform the Salat al-Eid prayer. Before the prayer, Muslims in Pakistan fulfill their obligation of Zakat Al Fitr, or locally known as 'Eid Fitrana'— a charitable donation meant to assist the less fortunate in celebrating Eid. This act of giving elevates the values of compassion and generosity, which are central to the festival. Following the prayer, families and friends come together for elaborate Eid feasts, featuring popular dishes such as 'sheer Khurma' (sweet vermicelli pudding), biryani, kebabs, and 'nihari'. Homes are decorated, and guests are welcomed with traditional sweets. One of the most anticipated customs of Eid Al Fitr is the exchange of Eidi — cash gifts given by elders to children as a token of love and blessings. Young ones eagerly collect their Eidi from parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents, excitedly planning how to spend it. As Pakistanis and Muslims across the world prepare to celebrate Eid, the festival serves as a moment of gratitude, unity, and joy, strengthening family bonds and fostering a sense of community spirit.
