Odisha: NHRC seeks report on semi-nude parading of workers in Sundargarh
Kendrapara, Jun 26 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Superintendent of Police, Sundargarh, to conduct an impartial and time-bound probe into the alleged parading of workers in a semi-nude condition on Mission Road.
The directive issued on June 24, follows a petition filed by human rights activist Akhand, who alleged that on December 12, 2024, a group of local residents forcibly stripped, tied, and paraded several workers after a woman accused one of them of outraging her modesty.
According to the petition, the incident occurred a day after the woman filed a police complaint claiming a worker had attempted to assault her while she was returning home after bathing.
Despite the police reaching the spot and attempting to rescue the victims, the mob reportedly resisted their intervention.
Disturbed by the incident and the alleged inaction of local authorities, Akhand submitted a complaint to the NHRC on December 16, 2024, citing serious human rights violations.
The petitioner urged the Commission to initiate legal action against those responsible, provide adequate compensation to the victims, and implement protection and rehabilitation measures to safeguard their dignity.
The NHRC asked the SP to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks, detailing the steps taken to ensure justice for the victims.

Maha: RPF Pune apprehends woman in abduction case, infant rescued
Pune, June 26 (UNI) Pune Division, Central Railway, has successfully rescued a seven-month-old boy and apprehended a woman accused in an abduction case, following swift and coordinated action by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Pune. The operation was initiated after the Divisional Security Control Room, Pune, received an alert from Government Railway Police (GRP), Hajipur, regarding an abduction case registered under Section 137 of BNS on June 18. The suspects—a man and a woman—were traced to Pune Railway Station through mobile location tracking, said a Central Railways release today. Under the direction of Senior Divisional Security Commissioner (Sr DSC), Pune, officers and personnel of RPF Thana Pune launched an intensive search operation. Multiple RPF teams were immediately deployed across strategic points of Pune Railway Station, including all platforms and key access routes, with special focus on Platform No 3. During the operation, two individuals matching the suspect descriptions were spotted on Platform No 3 and were promptly detained. They were brought to RPF Thana Pune for interrogation. The man identified himself as Munna Kumar Rajbhar (24), resident of Kopa Samota, P S Kopa, District Chapra, Bihar, and the woman identified herself as Poonam Devi (30), resident of Daya Chapra, P S Raghunathpur, District Siwan, Bihar. Upon being questioned about the child in their custody, both failed to give any satisfactory explanation or valid documents of guardianship. Their photographs, along with that of the child, were shared with GRP Hajipur, who confirmed their identity as the accused persons wanted in the registered abduction case. Subsequently, the woman was taken into formal custody, and the seven-month-old child was safely rescued and kept under protective care at RPF Thana, Pune, added the release. UNI SP SS

Over 769 Afghan nationals released from Pakistani jails and handed to Afghan authorities for deportation
Kabul/Islamabad, June 26 (UNI) Pakistan has released 769 Afghan nationals from detention over the past week, handing them over to Afghan authorities at two key border crossings, Afghanistan's Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation announced on Thursday, reports Khama News. The released individuals — including women and children — were repatriated via the Torkham crossing in eastern Nangarhar province and the Spin Boldak crossing in southern Kandahar. According to Afghan officials, the returnees received initial assistance at the border before being transported to their home provinces. The release comes amid an increasingly aggressive deportation campaign by Pakistan, which has stepped up efforts to expel undocumented Afghan refugees. Since late 2023, Pakistan has enforced a nationwide crackdown on Afghan nationals without legal papers, prompting mass returns — many under duress. Pakistan hosts an estimated 3.7 million Afghans, including more than 1.3 million registered refugees. Many have lived in the country for decades, fleeing successive waves of conflict. However, relations have grown tense since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, with Islamabad accusing Afghan nationals of involvement in security threats — a claim that rights groups say has fuelled xenophobia and led to indiscriminate detentions. Despite holding valid documents, many Afghans report facing harassment, arrests, and forced deportation. The United Nations and international observers have warned that these actions risk deepening Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis, where millions already face food insecurity, poverty, and limited access to services. Pakistan has announced that the third phase of its deportation drive will begin on 30 June, targeting tens of thousands more. Afghan authorities and humanitarian agencies are scrambling to cope with the rising influx of returnees, many arriving with little more than the clothes they wore in detention.

Telangana: ACB seizes over Rs 2.70 lakh unaccounted amount
Hyderabad, June 26 (UNI) The sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) seized an unaccounted amount of over Rs 2.70 lakh during surprise checks conducted at various places across Telangana including RTC check posts, RTA offices and Sub Registrar offices today. During the searches, ACB conducted raids on Salabatpur RTA Check post, kamareddy District and RTC offices of Peddapalli, Tirumulgherry and Uppal. During the check, an unaccounted amount of Rs 1.81 lakh was seized and apart from that several irregularities were observed, ACB said in a release here. The ACB also conducted similar cheks at Sub-Registrar Offices at Burgum padu of Khammam District and Bheemdevara palli of Warangal District. During the check an unaccounted amount of Rs 91,000 was seized and several irregularities were noticed. Report will be sent to the government for taking necessary action, the release added.
