Drydocks World launches competition to name the middle east's mightiest crane

Emirates 24/721-07-2025
Drydocks World, Dubai's original shipyard and a DP World company, has launched an emirate-wide competition to name a major new addition to its world-class engineering portfolio—a 5,000-tonne floating crane.
As the largest of its kind in the Middle East and Africa, the crane represents the latest in a series of groundbreaking engineering innovations, underscoring the company's ongoing commitment to maritime excellence.
Opened in Mina Rashid by the visionary ruler of Dubai, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1979, Drydocks World stood at the forefront of the UAE's rise as a global maritime and industrial hub. For over four decades, the shipyard has repaired some of the world's largest tankers and built cutting-edge floating infrastructure.
Now, Drydocks World is inviting all residents—from engineers and students to poets and business pioneers—to help give this colossal machine a name that reflects its purpose and significance.
The Floating Sheerleg Crane is being constructed by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC) and will be delivered to Dubai in the summer of 2026. But the name must be finalised now, before it is permanently engraved onto the crane during fabrication, becoming part of its identity for decades to come.
Designed to lift loads of up to 5,000 tonnes to a height of 120 meters above water, the floating crane is being hailed as a modern marvel of maritime engineering. Once operational, it will strengthen Drydocks World's ability to deliver mega maritime and energy projects.
H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: 'This crane is more than machinery. It's a symbol of Dubai's ambition, resilience and engineering excellence. We are building something extraordinary. Now we invite the people of Dubai, to help give it a name that reflects our shared values, heritage, and vision for the future.'
Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World, added: 'For over 40 years, Drydocks World has supported the UAE's rise as a global maritime hub. This new crane represents the next leap forward in scale, capability, and innovation'.
With a maximum lift of 5,000 tonnes, the crane can lift 400 double decker buses or twenty five wide-body aircraft. When fully extended, it's 180-metres reach matches the rooftop height of the iconic Burj Al Arab, placing it among the most powerful and visually impressive cranes in the world.
How to Enter
The competition is open to all residents. Participants are invited to suggest a name with cross-cultural appeal, symbolising strength, maritime heritage, innovation and the UAE's future.
Entries must include proposed names in Arabic or English, along with a brief explanation of its meaning and inspiration.
Names will be shortlisted by a panel of experts including Drydocks World leadership, Emirati cultural figures, and branding specialists.
The prize:
With the F1 Championship set for another thrilling ending at the Yas Marina Circuit in December, DP World is giving one lucky fan the chance to win a signed full-size 2025 McLaren Racing helmet.
For more information or to submit your entry, visit www.dpworld/nameourcrane.com before 4th August, 2025.

RTA commences second phase of marine transport station waiting area upgrades

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched the second phase of the project to upgrade waiting areas at marine transport stations in Dubai. This phase covers five key stations: Al Fahidi, Baniyas, Al Seef, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Bluewaters. The project aims to enhance customer service by providing a comfortable and modern environment that enriches the marine transport experience. It also supports RTA's strategy to promote customer happiness through innovative services that foster sustainability, convenience, and a higher quality of life for all. The development includes the installation of advanced air-conditioning systems, designated waiting areas for customers and People of Determination, and a series of enhancements implemented in line with the highest international standards. These upgrades aim to elevate customer satisfaction through distinctive and innovative architectural concepts that celebrate cultural and heritage identity. Drawing inspiration from Dubai's traditional wooden abras, the new designs reflect the emirate's rich maritime legacy while showcasing the aesthetic character of its modern urban environment. Khalaf Belghuzooz Al Zarooni, Director of Marine Transport at the Public Transport Agency, RTA, stated, 'This project forms part of RTA's master plan to enhance the infrastructure of the marine transport network in Dubai and raise the quality of services provided in this sector. It aligns with the vision of the Government of Dubai to deliver world-class services to residents, tourists, and visitors.' Al Zarooni added, 'These stations are designed to improve connectivity between key facilities and major landmarks in the area. Each station provides a direct link to surrounding residential communities and nearby development projects. In addition, the stations are integrated with other modes of public transport—such as buses, metro stations, and the tram network. This contributes to smoother mobility for residents and visitors, reduces reliance on private vehicles, and ensures seamless intermodal connectivity across Dubai's public transport system.' 'This step reaffirms RTA's commitment to implementing all necessary measures to ensure the highest standards of safety and comfort for marine transport users. The development includes advanced security features, such as surveillance cameras and state-of-the-art fire alarm systems,' he said. 'RTA has also incorporated the requirements of the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination into the design of the waiting areas, underscoring RTA's dedication to inclusivity and accessibility. The improvements provide a supportive environment through dedicated facilities, including ramps and smooth pathways tailored to diverse needs,' Al Zarooni revealed. The station upgrades are being implemented in line with the international benchmarks adopted during the first phase. Station locations were selected based on rising demand and strategic importance, reinforcing RTA's ongoing commitment to customer happiness, the delivery of innovative and sustainable services, and the enhancement of quality of life across the Emirate of Dubai.

Mideast Stocks: UAE gains on trade optimism, earnings hopes; Saudi slips in volatile trade

Gulf equities were mixed on Monday, with UAE markets tracking global gains on trade optimism, while Saudi markets edged down amid mixed earnings and several blue-chip stocks trading ex-dividend. The United States and the European Union on Sunday struck a framework trade agreement that will impose a 15% import tariff on most EU goods, half the previously threatened rate. Meanwhile, senior U.S. and Chinese officials will meet in Stockholm later on Monday to try to extend their tariff truce before an August 12 deadline. Saudi Arabia's benchmark index retreated 0.7%. Banque Saudi Fransi and Arab National Bank dropped 5.3% and 3.8%, respectively, after their shares traded ex-dividend. Petrochemical giant Saudi Kayan reversed early gains to close slightly lower as its second-quarter loss, though halved from a year earlier, was wider than analysts expected. Arabian Cement slid more than 3% after its second-quarter profit fell short of estimates. "A potential rebound hinges on continued positive earnings announcements and a recovery in oil prices", said George Pavel, general manager at Middle East. Dubai's benchmark index rose as much as 1.4%, before paring gains to end up 0.3% at its highest close in 17-1/2 years. That was the fourth straight day of gains, supported by strong second-quarter earnings and global trade optimism, led by a 2.3% gain in Emirates NBD Bank. The Abu Dhabi index edged up 0.2%, supported by a nearly 2% jump in heavyweight ADNOC Gas. Qatar's benchmark index eased 0.4%, as traders locked in profits following a recent rally, with most sectors closing in the red, led by a 2.3% decline in Qatar Islamic Bank. Investors are now looking ahead to the next wave of corporate results this week, after a strong run in bank earnings helped lift sentiment across the region, Pavel noted. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index edged down 1.4% following a record peak in the previous session, with Talaat Moustafa Group declining over 3.5%. SAUDI ARABIA dipped 0.7% to 10,885 ABU DHABI added 0.2% to 10,362 DUBAI rose 0.3% to 6,168 QATAR retreated 0.4% to 11,205 EGYPT fell 1.4% to 34,076 BAHRAIN gained 0.1% to 1,951 OMAN advanced 0.1% to 4,743 KUWAIT slid 0.7% to 9,174
