Titanium Dioxide: Safe for Skin, Toxic for Gut?

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), a widely used white pigment found in sunscreens, toothpastes, and paints, is no longer classified as carcinogenic in the EU following a landmark court ruling. The ruling overturns the European Commission's 2019 move to list TiO 2 as a suspected carcinogen and requires a fresh review of its classification.
Legal Reversal
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) annulled the European Commission's 2019 classification, concluding that the EU Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) relied on insufficient scientific evidence for its classification. Upholding a 2022 judgement, the court removed the carcinogen label and instructed the Commission to reassess the hazard status of TiO 2 .
'It remains to be seen how this ruling will influence future hazard assessments by the RAC and the European Commission, as well as the CLP classification process,' confirmed Helge Kramberger-Kaplan, who holds a doctoral degree in engineering and serves as the managing director of Dr. Robert-Murjahn-Institut GmbH in Ober-Ramstadt, Germany. CLP refers to the EU's Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulations for Hazardous Chemicals.
Kramberger-Kaplan added, 'Ideally, the arguments now confirmed by the ECJ after years of legal dispute would be considered from the outset in future reviews, avoiding further litigation and prolonged uncertainty.'
Animal Data vs Human Evidence
'The development of tumours following lung overload by ultrafine particles appears mainly in experiments with rats,' said Martin F. Wilks, MD, PhD, former director of the Swiss Centre for Applied Human Toxicology, University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland. 'Epidemiological studies of workers involved in TiO 2 production have so far shown no evidence of a dose-dependent increase in lung tumours.'
Despite the court's decision, TiO 2 has been banned in food products across the EU since 2022 because of its potential genotoxic effects. In 2021, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment warned that TiO 2 particles could enter the cell nucleus and damage DNA and chromosomes.
A 2017 study by Gerhard Rogler, MD, PhD, head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Hospital Zurich and professor at the University of Zurich, both in Zurich, Switzerland, also reported risks: In mice with preexisting intestinal inflammation, TiO 2 nanoparticles worsened symptoms. Rogler observed similar effects in patients with Crohn's disease, where penetrating particles may weaken the intestinal barrier, trigger inflammatory flare-ups, and increase the risk for cancer over time.
Evidence Gap
'It's notable that there is little new data to address the still controversial question of TiO 2 's carcinogenicity,' said Thomas Backhaus, PhD, chair of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Risk Management at the RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany. 'None of the plaintiff companies appear to have provided evidence proving that TiO 2 is not a lung carcinogen.'
Backhaus pointed to a recent study from Japan, which, even at higher particle loads comparable to those in the often-cited study by Uwe Heinrich, MD, PhD, professor emeritus at Hannover Medical School, and former executive director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine, Hannover, Germany, found no evidence of lung carcinogenicity in rats. However, he noted that the overall data remained insufficient, as concluded in a recent review. 'Why don't TiO 2 producers voluntarily conduct such studies?' he asked.
Low Public Risk
'I do not see a carcinogenic risk to the general population from inhalation,' Backhaus stated. 'Exposure levels are far too low. The highest exposure is likely from hairsprays, which under current EU rules may contain up to 1.1% TiO 2 for professional use and 1.4% for domestic use, according to Regulation (EU) 2021/850.'
Kramberger-Kaplan confirmed that 'in everyday life, the long-term presence of dust concentrations high enough to cause such effects in human lungs is impossible. Even studies involving thousands of titanium dioxide production workers have found no evidence of harm.'

Microplastics are all around us – in the air we breathe, in seas and rivers, they're found in the guts of sharks, and inside growing plants. They're also inside humans, too: in our blood, accumulating in our brains, and even in our testicles. So it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that one of the key means of entering the body is through the fluids we drink. Previous studies have established that microplastics are present in both tap water and bottled water, but new research has revealed that hot drinks may be an even bigger source of microplastics than was previously realised. A research team at the University of Birmingham tested 155 common soft drinks, including hot and cold drinks, for microplastics to get a picture of average human exposure through a realistic spectrum of daily drinks available in one country. The study, believed to be the first of its kind, found the highest concentrations of microplastics were in hot tea and hot coffee. The study also tested iced tea and coffee for microplastics, but found significantly less, suggesting the high temperatures and processes used for making hot drinks contribute to the levels of microplastics which end up in the product. The team assessed 31 different types of drinks in total from popular UK brands, all bought from supermarkets and coffee shops in 2024. These included hot and iced coffee, hot and iced tea, juices, energy drinks, and soft drinks. The samples were filtered, and then microplastic counts were determined through microscope imaging. Cold drinks were filtered immediately, while hot drinks were allowed to cool for 30 minutes before analysis. Hot tea in disposable cups contained the highest level of microplastics (MPs), averaging 22MPs per cup, compared to 14MPs per cup for glass cups. More expensive teabags leached the greatest amount of plastic, the study found, averaging 24 to 30MPs per cup. Similarly, the research team said that for hot coffee, their findings "strongly suggest that the disposable cup material is a primary source of [microplastics] in our hot coffee samples'. As not all samples were cup-sized, the team expressed their overall findings in microplastics per litre. Hot tea: 49 to 81 MPs per litre Hot coffee: 29 to 57 MPs per litre Iced tea: 24 to 38 MPs per litre Iced coffee: 31 to 43 MPs per litre Fruit juice: 19 to 41 MPs per litre Energy drinks: 14 to 36 MPs per litre Soft drinks: 13 to 21 MPs per litre The authors said their study "proves for the first time that assessment of exposure via drinking water only may substantially underestimate the risk" posed to humans by higher microplastics prevalence in other drinks. The same team published research in 2024, revealing the average microplastics concentration in tap water (24 to 56 MP per litre) was 'statistically indistinguishable" from that in bottled water (26 to 48 MP per litre). Professor Mohamed Abdallah from the University of Birmingham, who was one of the lead authors of the new research, told The Independent: "We noted that a lot of research in the microplastics sphere is focusing on drinking water – tap water, bottled water – and we've also released a paper from the UK on water. But we realised that people don't only drink water during their day. You drink tea, coffee, juices... "We found a ubiquitous presence of microplastics in all the cold and hot drinks we looked at. Which is pretty alarming, and from a scientific point of view suggests we should not only be looking at water, we should be more comprehensive in our research because other sources are substantial." He added: "We're consuming millions of teas and coffees every morning so it's something to definitely look at. There should definitely be legislative action from the government and also from international organisations to limit human exposure to microplastics … they're everywhere." The authors said the new research "serves as a critical step towards better understanding of the extent of MPs exposure under real-life scenarios, and advocates for more comprehensive studies for accurate risk assessment of MPs intake via dietary sources, to enable broader environmental and public health interventions".

Modern-day refrigeration fixes usually take the form of Dollar Tree organization hacks or in-fridge thermometers that prevent food waste, but what if this common appliance was also a known lethal threat? The 1920s were the early days of refrigeration, one of the most important inventions in food and drink, but early versions of these appliances compressed toxic and flammable gases to cool the air inside. Refrigerator gas leaks, fires, and even explosions were major problems that German scientist Albert Einstein and his Hungarian colleague, Leo Szilard, sought to solve with their own invention. In 1926, they created a unique pump system meant to replace the faulty valves responsible for refrigerators' poisonous gas leaks. Instead of relying on moving parts that were prone to malfunction, Einstein and Szilard's pump compressed refrigerant gases using an electromagnetic field. Additionally, it didn't require electricity to function — only a heat source. The pair had a U.S. patent pending by 1927. The following decade, however, was shaped by significant turmoil. Economic disaster rocked the world, and the rise of fascism threatened the Jewish inventors' very lives. But it wasn't just world-moving forces of history that derailed the so-called Einstein fridge. Market forces were also at play: Someone else invented something better. With businesses, governments, and consumers all feeling the pressure, the pair's pump design didn't see much enthusiasm. The early 1930s were especially hard on the inventors' home country of Germany, which already faced significant economic difficulty throughout the 1920s. The Great Depression helped accelerate the rise of the Nazis who, driven by a violent hatred of Judaism, scapegoated Jewish people for the country's woes. Rising antisemitic violence and discrimination made Germany unsafe for men like Einstein and Szilard, both of whom fled continental Europe by 1933. Technology, however, had already advanced beyond their pump design. The American company General Motors invested in Thomas Midgely, who in 1928 invented Freon, a brand name for several chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which were a safer alternative to poisonous and explosive gases. They were also more efficient than the electromagnetic pump. By the time Einstein moved to America in 1933 and Szilard followed five years later, Freon was already making refrigerators a standard kitchen appliance as the U.S. economy slowly recovered. What Happened To The Einstein Refrigerator? Their refrigeration dreams dashed, Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard moved on to other projects, including the frontiers of nuclear energy. This resulted in their 1939 letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning him that Nazi Germany was likely to invent a nuclear weapon. Roosevelt took action, and what historians know as the Einstein-Szilard letter led to the Manhattan Project, the atomic bombing of Japan, and the post-war age of nuclear weapons. In the world of refrigeration, the popular Freon formula known as R22 eventually became known as a major culprit of ozone layer depletion. Its gradual phase-out in favor of less harmful gases, including some that still go by the brand name Freon, is nearly complete. The decline of the original Freon, however, did not mean the rise of the Einstein fridge. Its electricity-free design briefly showed promise for delivering refrigeration to areas without reliable power, but this revival has not yet come to fruition. ADHD drugs have wider life benefits, study suggests

Drug treatment can help people newly diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) to reduce their risk of substance misuse, suicidal behaviour, transport accidents and criminality, a study suggests. These issues are linked to common ADHD symptoms such as acting impulsively and becoming easily distracted. Some 5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide are thought to be affected by the disorder - and growing numbers are being diagnosed. The findings, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), confirm the wider potential benefits of drug treatment and could help patients decide whether to start medication, the researchers say. Having ADHD means the brain works differently to most other people's. Symptoms can include difficulties concentrating and sitting still, having high energy levels and being impulsive. Despite the surge in people asking for help, the disorder is not becoming more common. Last year a BBC investigation found long waits for assessment in the UK. People are only diagnosed if the symptoms cause at least a moderate impact on their lives. The most commonly prescribed drugs, called stimulants, help manage everyday symptoms but there has been limited evidence of longer-term benefits for people's behaviour, while well-publicised side-effects, such as headaches, loss of appetite and trouble sleeping, have sparked debate on their safety. How many of us will end up being diagnosed with ADHD? Greater awareness behind ADHD surge, study suggests This BMJ study was based on 148,500 people aged six to 64, with ADHD in Sweden. Some 57% started drug treatment and, of these, methylphenidate (also known as Ritalin), was prescribed, to 88%. The researchers, from Southampton University and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, found taking ADHD medication was linked to reductions of first-time instances of: suicidal behaviour - 17% substance misuse - 15% transport accidents - 12% criminal behaviour - 13% When recurrent events were analysed, the researchers found ADHD medication was linked to reductions of: 15% for suicide attempts 25% for substance misuses 4% for accidental injuries 16% for transport accidents 25% for criminal behaviour "Oftentimes there is no information on what the risks are if you don't treat ADHD," said Prof Samuele Cortese, study author and professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at University of Southampton. "Now we have evidence they [drugs] can reduce these risks." This could be explained by medication reducing impulsive behaviour and lack of concentration, which might reduce the risk of accidents while driving and reduce aggressive behaviour which could lead to criminality. The researchers say the study was designed to be as robust as possible but cannot rule out the possibility the results were affected by factors such as people's genes, lifestyles and the severity of their ADHD. Accessing the right medication for ADHD in many countries is not easy, with some drugs in short supply. In the UK waiting times to see specialists after diagnosis in order to access drugs can be several years. Prof Stuart Kinner, head of the Justice Health Group at Curtin University in Western Australia, said the research demonstrated "the diffuse benefits of ADHD diagnosis and treatment". "Failure to diagnose and treat ADHD can lead to self-medication with alcohol or other drugs, poor mental health, injury, and incarceration," he said. "Too many people with undiagnosed ADHD end up in the criminal justice system, where their condition may remain undiagnosed and untreated." Ian Maidment, professor in clinical pharmacy at Aston University, said the study "adds to our understanding of the potential benefits of these drugs". However, he said the research did not assess whether patients actually took their medication or the impact of different doses.
