Police identify NJ, NY victims in fatal Taconic State Parkway crash in New Castle
State police have identified the four people killed, and the person critically injured, in Wednesday's two-car Taconic State Parkway crash in New Castle.
Preliminary investigation indicates a 2014 Ram ProMaster van driven by Yader A. Reyes, 50, of Long Branch, New Jersey, was traveling south May 14 on the Taconic when it crossed the median into the northbound lanes, a New York State Police news release said. The van collided head on with the 2024 Honda Accord driven by Robert Violante, 45, of Granite Springs, whose car was traveling in the northbound passing lane.

Three passengers in the Ram ProMaster, all men from New Jersey — Odenis Balladares Martinez, 20, of Neptune; Harrison Mauricio Reyes Rivera, 34, of Long Branch; and Bryan Aguilar Castillo, 45, of Asbury Park were —pronounced dead at the scene.
Violante, who was New Jersey's Bergenfield High School head football coach and a former star Somers High School athlete, was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead, according to police,
Reyes, the van's driver, is in critical condition at Westchester Medical Center, the police said

The crash's cause is unknown and the investigation is ongoing, police said Thursday.
Wednesday's crash, which occurred at mile marker 9.2 near exits 8 and 9, caused the van to overturn and catch fire, according to the police. A stretch of the Taconic was closed for hours after the crash and traffic was diverted off Exit 8.
The state police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant information to contact the police at 845-677-7300.

‘It's like senior skip day': RPD, MCSO work together to introduce new safety measures at Charlotte Beach Park
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Monroe County leaders and law enforcement introduced an increased presence starting on Wednesday evening at Ontario Beach Park. Officers said they responded to Ontario Beach Park last Wednesday for disturbances breaking out in large crowds. That led to 19-year-old Deandre Leonard getting arrested for allegedly running around with a handgun. 'We can't allow that to happen again,' Captain Greg Bello said. On Tuesday, Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello announced that on Wednesday nights, which is the night of the weekly Concerts by the Shore, will begin having a huge increase of law enforcement personnel: including RPD's Special Events Detail and the Patrol Unit from the Department's Lake section, deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and troopers from New York State Police. Teams will also be assigned from Monroe County Probation, Monroe County Security, and City of Rochester security. 'It's a great summer event that over 1,000 people go to,' Captain Bello said. 'We want to make sure that that's a safe event to go to.' Weather-dependent, RPD said it will implement its Tactical Unit and Traffic Enforcement Unit to 'conduct targeted, disorderly traffic safety, and all sorts of enforcement in the parking lots of the beach area.' Captain Bello said this is to target any groups 'before they're able to get into a point of creating mischief.' On Saturday evening, multiple roads were closed down in the Charlotte neighborhood near the beach. Fights spilled toward Lake Avenue in front of Tropix. Business owners have told News 8 that this has become a regular thing in the area. Rochester police, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and New York State Police are meeting to plan for increased patrols in the area. First responders will also be working with the Rochester Transit Service to implement a special events detail. 'Our Staff Duty officer now has the authority to turn busses around,' Bello said. 'So if we have large groups of teens going to the beach in order to try to create problems at the beach, we're going to turn that bus around.' The Monroe Crime Analysis Center will also be used to monitor social media and different groups to target any events, fights, or chaos being planned at the beach. 'We're going to go after those that are that are trying to create chaos,' Bello said. At the end of the day, it's a family park.' Monroe County announced County Executive Adam Bello has worked with the President of the Monroe County Legislature to introduce a Capital Improvement Project. This would put gates at the parking lot of the beaches to monitor who is going in and out more effectively. 'This isn't something new. This has been going on for decades, and I think it's one of the really cornerstones of public safety in the county of Monroe,' a Monroe County Director said. Monroe County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brendan Hurley said these fights coincide with Senior Skip Day. 'These are juveniles,' Deputy Hurley said. 'These are teens going out and causing havoc. But like you saw last week, we arrested somebody with a gun, so that has the potential to get a lot worse. So that's why we're taking it serious, and we're going to try to nip it in the bud and stop it before anything gets too far in the name of safety.' When asked why this wasn't done a long time ago, Captain Bello said it has to do with resources. 'We don't have infinite resources,' he said. 'We have to prioritize as we go forward with what we're going after with our non fatal shooting team. We have to focus. And so we've had details up at the beach. There was a detail up at the beach last week that thankfully kept that from escalating any further. But what we've looked at is, okay, where's our most appropriate deployment of resources? Kayaker rescues 5-year-old ripped from tube, NY cops say. Two adults charged
A 5-year-old was pulled underwater after a current forced them off a tube, leaving them on a river island, New York troopers said. On June 7, troopers were sent after getting reports of a 5-year-old who was tubing with a group in a river in Canisteo, according to a news release by the New York State Police. The group included Tessa Hamilton, 32, and Matthew Martin, 35. When medical personnel arrived, they found the child with a group of adults in an area that wasn't accessible, troopers said. Police then used ropes to cross the river. Officers said they later learned Martin and Hamilton were tubing in the river with the child when a 'current pulled them into a partially submerged tree.' The child, who was not wearing a flotation device, fell into the water and was rescued by a kayaker, troopers said. The attempts to reach the group were not successful because of the hazardous conditions, so a boat was deployed to rescue the group, troopers said. The child was given medical attention and was sent to a hospital for further treatment before being released, troopers said. Investigators later learned Martin had an active 'stay-away Order of Protection' which didn't allow him to be in contact with Hamilton and the child, officers said. Hamilton was charged with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, troopers said. Martin was charged with reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal contempt for violation of the active Order of Protection, troopers said. Canisteo is about a 300-mile drive northwest from New York City.

WATCH: Suspect shot at during pursuit in stolen vehicle, Dakota County Sheriff says
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KCAU) — A pursuit suspect was shot at during a pursuit in a stolen vehicle Sunday afternoon. According to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office, a pursuit ensued in Dakota County at around 1:45 p.m. on Sunday after the sheriff's office spotted a white Honda Accord in the area of Highway 35 and Highway 110. This vehicle had been spotted by a FLOCK camera and had been involved in a prior eluding incident. A Dakota County Sheriff's Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, which turned into a pursuit that went through South Sioux City. Officials said that they had attempted to stop the vehicle using spike strips, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Later, spike strips were deployed on the Veteran's Memorial Bridge by the South Sioux City Police Department. After hitting the patrol vehicle, the suspect then drove toward a South Sioux City police officer, who fired a shot from their gun at the suspect vehicle. The suspect made their way into Iowa where they eventually crashed into three other vehicles while trying to wedge their way through a stoplight. In total, the pursuit lasted for about 15 minutes, officials said. The suspect in the pursuit was arrested and identified as Benjamin Horn, of Winnebago, Nebraska. Officials said that the vehicle had been identified as a car that had previously been stolen out of Winnebago two days prior to the incident. Horn is currently being held in the Woodbury County Jail on charges of reckless driving, not having a driver's license, improper use of lanes, and failure to provide security against liability. The release said that he also has a warrant in Nebraska for charges that including felony flight to avoid arrest, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, willfull reckless driving, driving under suspension, and sixty-six counts of traffic violations in connection with the pursuit on the Nebraska side.
