Lessons from sports to ace game of life

Hindustan Times5 hours ago

In any sport, there is always a swashbuckler, and there is a dark horse at the same time. If there was a dazzling, long-haired genius in the sport of tennis, John McEnroe, known for his spellbinding serve and volley play, there was a dour Bjorn Borg. A few years down the line, if there was the 'boy wonder', Boris Becker, known for his blinding aces and acrobatic volleys, there was the consistent baseliner, Andre Agassi.
The annals of hockey, our national game, are replete with similar examples. Who can forget Ajit Pal Singh, the workman-like half-back of the 1975 World Cup-winning team, and the duo of Ashok Kumar and VJ Philips, the mercurial forwards and goal-scorers for India? Fast forward to the 1980s, and the dazzling dribbling of Mohammad Shahid was so well complemented by the solid play of MM Somaya that will always be etched in the minds of all hockey lovers.
Talking of the most popular sport in our country, if there was the ever-so-dependable Sunil Gavaskar, there was the swashbuckling stroke player, Salim Durrani, who was known to hit sixes on demand. The batting maestro, Sachin Tendulkar, was complemented by 'The Wall', Rahul Dravid.
The recent retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket has echoes of this interesting facet of sporting history. We all adore Rohit Sharma, who has the ability to rip apart the best of bowling attacks. The thundering straight drive that came from his bat in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, which virtually 'grounded' the umpire, exemplifies the batting of Rohit Sharma.
Virat Kohli is almost a study in contrast, going by the standards of modern slam-bang cricket. He may not hit every ball out of the park, but he provided the bedrock on which Rohit Sharma could go berserk, often with spectacular results. Virat Kohli had the ability to change gears, dour and sedate one moment, and firing like a gun the next.
These interesting pairings made me think of parallels in life. Very often, we are tempted to take the 'swashbuckling' and 'spectacular' way, only to realise that this approach doesn't always work. What works is the staid and steady approach of a Sunil Gavaskar! What works is the survival skill of Rahul Dravid. We need to develop the ability of Virat or Sachin to shift gears for navigating the rough waters in the course of life.
Thank you, Virat and Rohit, for giving us moments to savour on the cricket field and for giving us lessons to walk the path of life with success. gulbaharsidhu@rediffmail.com

Glenn Maxwell emulates Rohit Sharma with superb T20 hundred for Washington Freedom

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell delivered a stunning performance with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 106 off just 49 balls during Washington Freedom's clash against the Los Angeles Knight Riders at the Oakland Coliseum, California, on Wednesday, June 18. It marked his eighth T20 international century, putting him level with some of the game's greats, including Rohit Sharma and Jos in at number six, Maxwell showed no signs of pressure and single-handedly turned the tide in his team's favour, even as the rest of the batting lineup struggled for momentum. His knock featured just two boundaries but an astonishing 13 sixes, as he shifted gears and took full control of the explosive innings evoked memories of his legendary World Cup performance against Afghanistan, where he led a one-man rescue mission en route to Australia lifting the title. With his eighth century in T20 cricket, Maxwell now joins the likes of Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler, and fellow Australians Aaron Finch, Michael Klinger, and David Warner in a tie for fourth-most T20 centuries. Only Chris Gayle stands ahead by a wide margin, holding the top spot with an incredible 22 heroics set the tone for the second innings, as Washington Freedom's bowlers backed up the performance with a clinical effort. Jack Edwards and Mitchell Owen took three wickets apiece, helping bundle out the Los Angeles Knight Riders for just 95 runs in a one-sided after the match, Maxwell reflected on his innings and acknowledged the support of Head Coach Ricky Ponting, especially after a difficult IPL season earlier in the things don't go your way; you just need time to find your rhythm. I've let Ricky (Ponting) down in a couple of tournaments. I even missed out on playing for Punjab toward the end of the IPL," Maxwell admitted."Playing under Ricky, we hopefully have a chance to add to last year's trophy. We tried to stick to that 6 to 8 metre length. Chopping and changing the bowlers helped as well. Netravalkar did well. Adair did well in his first game. You just have to adapt. The attitude in the group has been outstanding," he Maxwell in red-hot form, Washington Freedom will look to build momentum as they continue their title defense. Their next challenge comes against MI New York on June Watch

'Well, in the absence of Kohli...': Not Shubman Gill, Saba Karim Wants This Indian Star To Bat At Iconic No.4 Position

India's Test side has seen two cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli walking out to play at No.4 position for the last 20 years. While after Sachin's retirement it was more or so fixed that Kohli will take the iconic spot, this time there are plenty of names and no guarantee that they may succeed long term. Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket and the No.4 spot now lies in conundrum. According to former India Selector Saba Karim, KL Rahul should take the iconic spot and bat that position instead of opening. India Test side is all set to play a Five-match Test series against England starting from June 20 at Headingley,Leeds. Shubman Gill will lead the side for the first time after being appointed as the captain taking the baton from Rohit Sharma who in May called it quits from according to several experts, Shubman Gill will move a slight lower going from his original No.3 position to No.4. The spot is not just another spot but in Test cricket, the game is run and anchored by that position , also that position is one for legacy."Well, in the absence of Kohli, Rahul's role is monumental. And I look at him, as a batter who can bat a number four. Many people have suggested different batting positions, but I feel that KL is ideal to replace or take over, the role of Virat Kohli at number four, because that number four, he can play a dual role of negotiating the early setback if that happens in the Indian side, and then he can carry the innings forward. He does have the right kind of technique. He has done well in England," Karim told NDTV."He has a temperament. And I think with the past season, season and a half, there is a lot of maturity that has come in. So I think that's the kind of responsibility with Indian team management,' he Rahul was originally slated to play in middle-order during Australia Test series but Rohit leaving the First test due to his baby's birth forced the management to send Rahul up the order. The result was fascinating, Rahul along with young Yashasvi Jaiswal led India to their only Test win in that series at Perth. Rahul has batted twice at this position scoring 10 runs at an average of 54.

"We Do Not Hide Behind A Bat": Jasprit Bumrah's Namedrops Virat Kohli In Explosive Test vs T20 Remark

Despite ending his 18-year wait for an Indian Premier League (IPL) title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025, Virat Kohli had stated after the match that even that achievement ranked five levels below Test cricket to him. Kohli has been a championer of Test cricket throughout his career, describing it as the pinnacle of the sport. Reflecting on Kohli's statement, India's pace spearhead has also echoed that Test cricket is the pinnacle for him. However, Bumrah also sympathised with players - particularly bowlers - who sacrificed their Test career to play T20 leagues. In a discussion with Kohli's mentor at RCB and former India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik, Bumrah acknowledged the changing mentality among up and coming fast bowlers who see a better future playing T20 cricket and not Tests. "It's very subjective to every individual. I understand the thought process. They have one career. We do not hide behind a bat. You have to put a lot of strain on your body. You have to look after your family and earn money," Bumrah said in the interaction, which took place on Sky Sports. "If sometimes their bodies won't allow them to play the longest format and they still want to contribute towards the game, sometimes those are smarter approaches," Bumrah stated. Bumrah, the No. 1-ranked ICC Test bowler at the moment, however, did claim that Test cricket is still the ultimate platform and format for him. "Everybody is different. It comes from a time when Test cricket was the pinnacle. This was the format. I grew up watching. I always judge myself through this format. In the current generation, things are different. T20 cricket is there. Leagues are there. Thought processes have changed. Mindsets change. You cannot judge players or fast bowlers. Yes this is the purest format, but everybody is different," Bumrah said. Bumrah advised players to follow the words said by Kohli and pay respect to the longest format of the game. "I would encourage people to play this format to earn respect. Like Virat said in his interview, you will get respect through this format. You will get respect all over the world," Bumrah stated. Jasprit Bumrah has enjoyed a superb career in both the longest and shortest format of the game, boasting the distinction of having been ranked No. 1 in Tests but also being named the 'Player of the Tournament' for a T20 World Cup.
