Law enforcement stress defensive driving over Memorial Day weekend

Yahoo23-05-2025

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Hundreds of Ohio law enforcement agencies will have extra eyes on the road this weekend.
Memorial Day weekend official kicks off the statewide 'Click it or ticket' campaign. The goal is to enforce Ohio's seat belt laws, promote safe driving habits and remove impaired drivers from the roads.
Millions of Ohioans are expected to drive somewhere this weekend, whether across town to a neighborhood cookout or for a long weekend vacation.
OSP says there's nothing like a defensive driver when the roads are busy.
'Make sure you're really looking back behind you before you make a lane change, don't rely on your car's technology,' said Sgt. Brice Nihiser, OSP. 'Nothing beats a safe driver, nothing beats a defensive driver. So just make sure you're looking in your mirrors, adjusting for everything that is around you.'
Memorial Day is the start of what's know as the '100 deadliest days,' a period when traffic deaths and injuries typically increase during the summer months.

Four suspects in Makaha shooting have been charged According to court documents, the violence erupted around 9 p.m. on May 28 at a home on Lahaina Street in Makaha. Detectives said the suspects, including a juvenile male, arrived at the home and approached the group yelling, 'You ready to die boys?' before opening fire. The victims tried to run into the house and at some point, one of them also fired a gun. Marcus Araneta, who was at the home, was fatally shot in the chest. Four others, including Stevens himself, were hit. According to police, Araneta was pronounced dead just over an hour later. An autopsy confirmed his death as a homicide. I've been around these kids, and they're good kids. nothing but respect I ever got from all of them,' said the Stevens' family member. Stevens' family tells us they have received hateful messages and fears for the safety of their loved ones. 'You know how hurtful that is. He belonged to one family that loved him. OPSO discusses funding needs for jail repairs with city council

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — During the special council meeting, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson insisted that the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office is in need of about $1 million to address plumbing concerns in the jail, including $300,000 to $400,000 for emergency repairs to fix immediate leaks behind the walls. According to a plumbing contractor brought in by Hutson, the leaks were slow at first, but a pressure change caused the pipes to burst. New Orleans jail escapee releases videos, prompting search of home where they were made, source says 'Some sort of a pressure increase or whatever blew out the o-ring out in this, and then it just started leaking through the chase and then throughout the entire building,' OPSO plumbing contractor Ernie Anderson said. The city council was hesitant to agree to hand over the money, questioning if the OPSO already has enough funds to cover this problem. At the meeting, Louisiana Legislative Auditor Mike Waguespack said that, after taking a look, Hutson has about $5 million of emergency funds before the city would need to step in. 'Yeah I think they would have plenty of dollars to do any major renovation,' Waguespack said. Councilman JP Morrell questioned the urgency for city money, saying he never received any notice of severe plumbing-related issues before now. Social media video appears to show escaped New Orleans inmate Antoine Massey pleading case 'I still don't have any estimates regarding plumbing issues. I understand emergent plumbing issues, but your words, what you've been saying is these are long standing plumbing issues the council has been aware of,' Morrell said. Hutson ultimately argued against his point, saying she has notified the council every step of the way about plumbing issues since the jail has been open. 'We have notified you every budget cycle, every chance we get up here that we have infrastructure issues and the plumbing been part of them. We didn't have this major leak until recently,' Hutson Orleans police searching for suspect in St. Claude art heist Three arrested in St. John Parish drug bust OPSO discusses funding needs for jail repairs with city council 'Blessing of the Fleet' ceremony held in New Orleans at start of Hurricane Season NORD Splash Day summer kickoff Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Carl Junction mayor suspended by city council

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — The mayor of Carl Junction has been suspended. During Tuesday night's council meeting (6/3), council member James Shanks made a motion to suspend Mike Moss from his duties as mayor. The motion then passed by a vote of 6-to-2. Immediately after the vote, Moss left. It was then chaired by Mayor Pro Tem, Hollie Lavigne. Prior to the vote, the council unanimously agreed to hire Lauber Municipal Law, which will provide outside counsel regarding an ethics complaint filed against Moss. That complaint was filed by Shanks and accuses Moss of an alleged insult against female city employees. At least four other alleged complaints have also been made against Moss. After the meeting, Shanks told us, 'I made the motion to protect any potential victims who work or have worked for the city.' Moss declined to comment tonight, as did two other city officials.
