Rhayader farmer sets new British two-stand and solo record
The duo of Gethin Lewis and Llyr Evans smashed the previous record of 1,075 ewes, set by Martin Howlett and Jonny Roberts in 2019.
Shearing started at 7am at Gethin's family farm of Glan Elan, in Cwmdauddwr, Rhayader, on Saturday, July 12.
After four runs the last ewe was shorn at 5pm, meaning a combined total of 1,364 ewes had been shorn in eight hours.
Gethin, a two-time Welsh champion shearer, also set a new British individual record, shearing 996 ewes throughout the day.
Llyr shore 668 ewes, which also eclipsed the previous solo record set by Huw Jones, of 663.
'I'm delighted that our attempt was successful,' said Gethin, 29.
'It's been a 12-month journey preparing for today, but all the hard work has been worth it.'
Llyr added: 'All roads led to today, and I'm proud of what we have both achieved – it feels great to be a British shearing record holder.'
Of the hot weather, Llyr, from Trawsgoed, near Aberystwyth, added: 'The extreme heat made the challenge more difficult and at times during the day it was extremely difficult and we both needed to dig deep to get through to the end.'
Both Gethin and Llyr paid tribute to all those who had supported their attempt.
'This record would not have been possible without the help and support of both our families,' said Gethin.
'Thank you, it means so much to us both that we have achieved what we have here today.
'We'd also like to pay tribute to the support and commitment of so many people, too many to name individually.

Gareth Jones, head of member engagement at British Wool, said: 'On behalf of British Wool, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Gethin and Llyr on their incredible achievement.
'Setting a shearing record requires not only personal dedication and skill but also the collective effort of a strong support team. We commend everyone involved in making this success possible.'

Fans reckon the arrival of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Ekitike might potentially deliver Isak right into Liverpool's open hands. Instead, Eddie Howe's side are planning for Ekitike to compete alongside the Swedish talisman at St James' Park, following Callum Wilson's exit. But naturally the rumour mill is in overdrive given how much Newcastle are prepared to cough up for Ekitike. Talks centre on what would be a club-record deal for the 23-year-old striker, with Newcastle offering a staggering £69.5million on Monday. Howe's side would be more open to cashing in on Isak, 25, if he doesn't renew his contract, which is up in 2028, over the next year. And Ekitike could be ready-made replacement for him, with Liverpool and Arsenal queuing up for Isak. Liverpool have previously revealed their willingness to play "a waiting game" for Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season. Arsenal Plot Big Double Transfer For Eberechi Eze and Hugo Ekitike! | Transfers Exposed 7 7 Yet there are admirers who believe that Ekitike has a higher ceiling and could end up becoming one of the best strikers in the world. He scored 22 goals in 48 games across all competitions last season for Frankfurt as he helped them qualify for the Champions League. The Frenchman is tall, at almost 6ft 3in, yet has excellent feet and speed, like Isak. His debut season in Germany, after his loan move from Paris Saint-Germain was made permanent, was impressive - 15 goals and eight assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances. Ekitike and Omar Marmoush formed a formidable partnership for Eintracht until Marmoush left for Manchester City in January. Newcastle almost signed Ekitike months before they spent an initial £60m on Isak in 2022. Ekitike, then at Reims, turned down a deadline day move to St James' Park in the winter window, instead choosing PSG after a season on loan the French capital. And after spending £3million on Ekitike from PSG in February 2024, Eintracht Frankfurt, now value him at £86million. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all registered their interest in Ekitike too. Newcastle have spent £55million on one major summer signing so far following the arrival of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest. 7 7

Ryan Reynolds learns exact reason why top target from Premier League has rejected Wrexham
Wrexham have missed out in their ambitious bid to sign a Premier League club's captain, with the player now revealing why he chose to sign a new deal with his current side Wrexham have been dealt a major blow as one of their top transfer targets has snubbed an offer to join the Hollywood-owned club. The Red Dragons are currently looking to bolster their squad as they prepare to play in the Championship for the first time in 43 years next season Manager Phil Parkinson has already added Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie and Leicester keeper Danny Ward to his ranks this summer. The former Sunderland and Bolton boss is expected to be well-backed by Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in the current window. Wrexham were strongly linked with an ambitious move for Fulham captain Tom Cairney back in May. It came after reports emerged that the Welsh side had tabled an attractive financial offer to the 34-year-old midfielder after his contract expired at the end of last season. However, the Scottish international has now decided against dropping down from the Premier League after agreeing a new one-year deal with Fulham. He outlined his reasons for choosing to extend his stay at Craven Cottage into an 11th year in a video released by the west London outfit on social media, which will make things clearer for Reynolds and McElhenney on why Wrexham ultimately missed out. In the footage, Cairney initially appears to hint at an emotional farewell before finally confirming he will be back again next term. He said: "Just a quick message to the fans. I've been at the club 10 years and we've had some unbelievable times together, with three promotions and two play-off finals – one where you were there and one where you weren't there. "Lifting the trophy at the Cottage is a day I'll never forget after winning the title and after that, establishing ourselves as a Premier League club, with three unbelievable seasons in the Premier League, a Carabao cup semi-final and an FA Cup quarter-final. "We could have gone a little bit further, but it wasn't meant to be. Captaining this club for as long as I did was always a special, special thing, and one I never took for granted. It was an incredible feeling every time I played at the Cottage, my favourite place." Cairney added: "I feel like I grew up here and you really took to me early on. Special times and I never thought I'd stay this long. For that reason, that is exactly why I'm staying for one more year." Cairney featured in 25 Premier League matches for Fulham last season and initially expressed his desire to stay after scoring in his side's win over Brentford in May. The Cottagers were yet to offer him a new deal at the time. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day about his contract situation, he said: "Nothing is sorted yet. Next week is my final game for Fulham. Hopefully it's not. In football, sometimes things go to the last minute and hopefully it's not my final time at Craven Cottage next weekend." Wrexham also recently suffered a setback in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest's Lewis O'Brien. Despite striking a blockbuster deal worth £5million for the midfielder, his wage demands are understood to be posing a barrier to completing the signing. Forest are said to be willing to sell the 26-year-old after sending him out on loan to Swansea last season. Although Wrexham have agreed terms with the Premier League club for O'Brien's services, the deal is reportedly in doubt as they are reported to be some way off the figures that the player is seeking when it comes to personal terms.
