71-Year-Old Jockey Perry Ouzts Approaching New Record
"Ironman" jockey Perry Ouzts, 71, will start a new record for starts in a Thoroughbred horse race in this Saturday's fifth race at Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. The veteran jockey will enter the starting gate for a 53,579th time, eclipsing the previous record set by retired California-based rider Russell Baze. At this writing, Ouzts sports a record of 53,570 starts– 7,514 wins – 7,013 seconds – 6,694 thirds, for earnings of $53,055,913. The next active rider is Hall of Famer John Velazquez with 37,363 mounts and 6,703 wins.Ouzts is also the record holder as the oldest jockey to win a race in North America — a feat he accomplished last summer.
Ouzts has spent most of his career riding in Northern Kentucky and Ohio. Though he has never won a graded stakes race, he was the subject of an award-winning 2015 documentary "Ironman Perry Ouzts," produced by the Hennegan Brothers.He ranks fifth all-time in wins, trailing only Russell Baze (12,842 wins), Laffit Pincay Jr. (9,530), William Shoemaker (8,833), and Pat Day (8,803).Ouzts told John Engelhardt that loyalty has been a key factor in his success. He credits the support of trainers W.J. Danner, Larry Holt, Joe Woodard, Bill Connelly, Matt Kordenbrock, Barb Riley and Larry Smith for the many winners they have put him up on.
He has also had the same agent, Jamie Fowler, for 38 years. Fowler contracted throat cancer in February of 2023 and has undergone 50 radiation treatments, several surgeries, and 10 months of physical therapy. This week, Fowler was declared cancer-free. According to Ouzts: 'I asked if he could still do the job from home when it was discovered, and with texting, video replays and other on-line features, he hasn't missed a beat.'
He has won 35 meet titles at River Downs/Belterra Park, 13 titles at the now defunct, Beulah Park and 2 titles at Turfway Park.
He won the last race at River Downs and the first race there under its new name Belterra Park.
He was the first jockey to win a stakes race at 70 years old.
His richest races won were the $200,000 Cradle Stakes (2007), the $100,000 Queen City Oaks (1988) and the $100,000 Green Carpet Stakes (this season).
He won four races on a horse named Oats N' Ouzts.
He and his wife, Toni have two sons – Kyle (35) and Tyler (32).

Video footage from the event taken by EW shows a growing crowd surrounding the convention center entrance, with the ambulance parked out front. As a result, entrance to the convention center was briefly paused on Saturday in order to allow emergency services to pull up to the front of the building and aid the individual. Attendees were allowed to enter the convention shortly after the ambulance departed. The incident comes just one day after a confusing fire alarm announcement rang out near Hall H and Ballroom 20, despite no alarm actually being heard. Security notified attendees during a Dexter: Resurrection panel to 'remain calm' and await further instructions. "I'm not calm," moderator Jamie Chung said, to which star Michael C. Hall replied, "Thank God Dexter's with us." 49ers embrace youth movement with potential influx of rookies in starting lineup
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers went into the past few training camps with one of the NFL's deepest rosters filled with established stars that left little opportunity for rookies to contribute. That's far from the case this year as San Francisco underwent a roster reset in the offseason that has infused the team with more youth and the most opportunities for rookies to compete since 2019 when draft picks like Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel and Dre Greenlaw helped the Niners reach the Super Bowl. That's especially true on defense, where at least five rookies are in the mix for starting roles on a unit that has been overhauled completely in the offseason. 'There's a chance we could have six new guys starting. There's a chance we could have eight, we'll see how it plays out,' coach Kyle Shanahan said, referring to rookies, offseason additions and former backups. 'Any time you say that, that's different. That is a different team, that is a different side of the ball so that does take some time.' The 49ers have had only four rookies start a season opener over the past five seasons, tied for the fifth fewest in the NFL in that span. They could match that this season with first-round pick Mykel Williams and fellow draft picks Alfred Collins, C.J. West, Nick Martin and Upton Stout all in the mix. The Niners have started at least three rookies in a season opener just five times since the NFL-AFL merger, with the last time coming in 2006 when Vernon Davis, Manny Lawson and Melvin Oliver all got the nod. It also happened three times early in Bill Walsh's tenure in 1980, the Super Bowl-winning season in 1981 and 1983. The most rookies to start an opener for San Francisco since the merger was four in 1978. That's a challenge to a coaching staff that also includes a new defensive coordinator, with Robert Saleh returning after a stint as head coach of the New York Jets from 2021-24. 'With youth, the challenge is that a veteran never makes mistakes, but sometimes they might be a step slow," Saleh said. 'They're not running that 40 time that they ran back in the combine, right? Where a rookie is going to make a lot of mistakes, but he's flat fast, and explosive. So, the trick is, how quickly can you get that football player to play like a veteran while he's still connected to his 40 time that he ran back at the combine. So that youthful energy, that youthful explosiveness. With youth comes lumps because they're learning.' Saleh said even though his scheme isn't overly complex, he might need to simplify some things initially to help the young players acclimate. The problem is the opposing offenses won't be doing the same and they will hope to confuse the rookies who aren't used to dealing with NFL offenses. 'They don't just stand there and make it easy for us,' Saleh said. "They're motioning, they're moving, they're jetting, they're doing all kinds of stuff pre-snap. So there are going to be some moments where it's like, oh God. But, you prick your finger, you fight through it, you get them to a point where they see it over and over and over again, and your hope is that that youthful explosiveness comes out as they continue to gain experience.' The 49ers have liked what they have seen so far, with the young players being attentive in meetings and knowing their assignments on the field. Shanahan said they have brought needed energy to the team starting in the offseason and the veterans have been impressed. 'I like the group,' Bosa said. 'I think we have a lot of talent. I think when you look out on the field, you see NFL bodies out there that look impressive, which is a good thing. AI is used for lots of purposes these days — and if he could, Matthew Lawrence would "love" to use it to resurrect his Mrs. Doubtfire co-star Robin Williams. He said he thinks Robin's "voice is just so iconic" and that using AI could provide a way to "do something really special" with it. He said, "I would love — now, obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family — but I would love to do something really special with his voice because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic." He insisted he's not the only one who thinks so, either. "It's in everybody's head," he shared. "And it would be so cool." "And it always stuck with me," Matthew shared. "And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of A.I. He's gotta be the voice in something.'
