Tourist warning as more than a dozen go blind and drop dead at popular resort
More than a dozen tourists have died from methanol poisoning after unknowingly buying fake alcohol at a popular resort.
It is thought many of the people were buying the homemade alcohol from a local market, which led the victims to turn blind before an agonising death - and authorities are fearing the death toll will continue to rise.
All the tourists who have currently been identified made a trip to the popular resort of Sochi in Russia - Vladimir Putin 's favourite tourist spot. Among the dead are Maxim Smetanin, 37, and his wife Darya, 35, who bought the bootleg alcohol thinking it was the popular grape liquor grappa. It comes after a woman claimed 'my husband seemed confused on Christmas holiday - then he died in front of me'.
Darya had small sips of the deadly drink on the long-distance train home, but soon started to feel unwell, with a report stating: 'First she went blind, and then lost consciousness.'
Noticing something was seriously wrong, she was rushed to the hospital but died soon after. Unusually, her husband initially felt okay, but not long after Darya passed away, his condition took a turn, going blind and falling into a coma as his kidney collapsed.
While Methanol and ethanol are both alcohols, methanol is significantly more toxic than ethanol and is highly poisonous. It is more commonly used as a fuel or solvent for paint strippers.
Soon after, three members of a family of four were also killed after drinking a deadly cocktail bought from a market. All four began feeling ill, putting it down as a bad hangover, but according to reports in the Kub Mash telegram channel, in the evening they 'were unable to stand or speak, and began losing consciousness".
All four were taken to the hospital, but only one of them survived. Another tourist went blind and died from kidney failure after drinking some fake Chacha - similar to Grappa- while two more female tourists died from methanol poisoning after arriving home.
Following a national guard raid of what is thought to be the dodgy market stall, two people identified only as Olesya, 31, and Eteri, 71, have appeared in a Sochi court suspected of distributing the fake alcohol.
Russian Interior Ministry spokeswoman Maj-Gen Irina Volk issued an urgent warning to Russians not to drink 'alcohol-containing products of unknown origin'.
'Preliminary findings indicate that the detainees were selling homemade alcoholic beverages at the local Kazachiy market,' she said.
'Efforts are currently underway to identify the producer of the life-threatening alcohol and others involved in the illegal activity.'
Methanol poisoning has been on the rise in recent years as party-goers look for cheap booze and opt for local homemade drinks. This hit headlines last year when six people, including a British lawyer, died after drinking fake alcohol in Laos in South East Asia.

He took her to the hospital right away. There, Marusya's eye was removed." The villager also revealed the sad reason as to why the two got married after this alleged incident. She said: "For a girl in those days, this was a disgrace. "So Marusya's mother threatened Volodka: if you don't marry, I'll put you on trial. So they got married. Marusya was very embarrassed about her glass eye later, never looked you in the face when talking, and tilted her head to the side." The villager also said Putin's father was notorious for terrorising teenage girls Anfisa added: "He liked to lift up girls' skirts and tie them in a knot over their heads. Taliban investigating death threats against UN Afghan female staff
In its latest update on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, the UN mission to the country said dozens of female national staff were subjected to explicit death threats in May. The threats came from unidentified individuals related to their work with the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, or UNAMA, other agencies, funds, and programmes, 'requiring the UN to implement interim measures to protect their safety', according to the report. It said the Taliban told the UN mission that their personnel were not responsible for the threats. An Interior Ministry investigation is under way, the report said. 'This is completely incorrect,' Mr Qani said. Mr Qani did not answer questions about an investigation. The Taliban barred Afghan women from working at domestic and foreign nongovernmental organisations in December 2022, extending this ban to the UN six months later, and then threatening to shut down agencies and groups still employing women. Humanitarian agencies say the Taliban have hampered or interfered with their operations, allegations denied by authorities. The UN report is the first official confirmation of death threats against Afghan women working in the sector. The report also highlighted other areas affecting women's personal freedoms and safety. In Herat, inspectors from the Vice and Virtue Ministry began requiring women to wear a chador, a full-body cloak covering the head. Dozens of women deemed 'not in compliance' were barred from entering markets or using public transportation. Several women were detained until relatives brought them a chador, the report said. In Uruzgan, women were arrested for wearing a headscarf, a hijab, rather than a burqa. Women have also been denied access to public areas, in line with laws banning them from such spaces. In Ghor province, police forced several families to leave a recreational area. They warned the families against visiting outdoor picnic sites with women. In Herat, vice and virtue inspectors stopped family groups with women and girls from accessing an open recreational area, only allowing all-male groups. Nobody from the Vice and Virtue Ministry was immediately available to comment on the Ghor, Herat and Uruzgan incidents, which the UN said happened in May. In Kandahar, the Public Health Department instructed female health care workers to be accompanied to work by male guardians with an identification card proving that they were related to the woman by blood or marriage. It was not immediately clear if the card is specific to Kandahar or will be rolled out across Afghanistan. 'The process to apply for a mahram (male guardian) identification card is reportedly cumbersome and can take up to several weeks as it requires the de facto Department for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice and a member of the local community (eg malik, imam or village elder) to verify the relationship,' the UN report said.
