South African Fashion Week (SAFW's) Spring/ Summer 25 Collections were nothing but a marvel, with designers raising the bar.
Gert-Johan Coetzee unveiled his latest visionary collection The Arrival: Where Ancestry Meets the Unknown at South African Fashion Week 2025, marking a defining moment not just for the brand but for African fashion as a whole.
Coetzee took guests on a journey 10,000 years into the future and back home again. The runway presentation was cinematic in scale. A video narrative played before the show, illustrating an imagined exodus into space and the powerful return to Earth.
The Arrival is about reclaiming the parts of ourselves we feared were lost, said Coetzee. 'Even when we feel like we've drifted too far, our roots remain within us.'
The front row and leading lights gallery glittered with South African stardom. Among those in attendance were multi-award-winning songstress Lira, chart-topping rapper Nadia Nakai, media powerhouse Lerato Kganyago, iconic designer David Tlale, celebrated news anchors Abigail Visagie and Puleng Molebatsi, former Miss South Africa and Miss Universe finalist Natasha Joubert, and beloved entertainer Somizi.
Rubicon unveiled 'Ethereal Continuum,' their Spring/Summer 2025 (SS25) collection, a poetic fusion of lightness, movement, and timeless sophistication. Inspired by celestial rhythms and ancestral wisdom, this collection captures the essence of transcendence and transformation.
With this collection, Rubicon redefines contemporary African elegance through a palette of sun-washed neutrals, and sky-kissed blues, infused with radiant golds and warm earth tones.
Fabrics are weightless yet commanding, designed to move with the body like whispers of the wind on the skin, like echoes of heritage woven into the future.
'We wanted to create a collection this season that feels boundless yet deeply rooted, light yet powerful. 'Aptly titled Ethereal Continuum', our pieces embody the spirit of the modern African woman: she is timeless, she is movement, she is evolution' said Hangwani Nengovhela, Founder and Creative Director of Rubicon.
In its 28th year, the country's top fashion design platform, organized with the support of, Isuzu, Cruz Vodka, and L'oreal Paris, the South African Fashion Week SS25 hosted seven shows over three days and showed 24 collections.

Tyla to light up Tipsy Music festival in Barbados this July

Grammy-winning sensation Tyla is set to make waves in the Caribbean this July, headlining the 2025 Tipsy Music Festival (TMF) in Barbados. This marks her first-ever performance in the region, timed perfectly with the island's vibrant Crop Over season. The festival promises an electrifying blend of international and Caribbean sounds. Tyla's unique fusion of R&B, Amapiano, and Pop will take centre stage on Sunday, 20 July, according to Barbados Today. Tyla's rise has been meteoric. Her debut album, TYLA , made history as the highest-charting album by an African female soloist on the Billboard 200. Her triple-platinum hit single Water not only dominated the charts but also earned her a Grammy in 2024 for Best African Music Performance. The song's success on the Billboard Hot 100 further cemented her status as a global star. TMF organiser Zamani Moodie expressed excitement about Tyla's involvement. 'We are proud to welcome Tyla to the TMF stage for the very first time. She is one of the most exciting global voices of this generation, a trailblazer whose energy, artistry, and cultural relevance. It makes her a perfect match for the Caribbean's most dynamic summer festival.' Moodie emphasised that TMF aims to blend international energy with Caribbean soul, and Tyla fits that vision perfectly. The festival's Day 2, known as the TMF All White Experience, will be the highlight of the weekend. Tyla's performance is expected to set a new standard for festival experiences in the Caribbean. Joining her is Soca legend Machel Montano. This collaboration promises a powerful fusion of Afro-fusion and Caribbean rhythms that will keep festival-goers dancing all night. For South African fans, Tyla's headline slot is a proud moment. She has taken the global stage with a sound deeply rooted in African music culture, especially Amapiano. The genre has captivated audiences worldwide, and her success story is a testament to the power of African music on the international scene. In a social media post, Tyla shared her excitement: 'I can't wait to bring my music to the Caribbean for the first time. Barbados, get ready for an unforgettable night!' This debut promises to be a landmark event, not just for Tyla but for the entire Caribbean music festival scene. With her Grammy accolades, chart-topping hits, and magnetic stage presence, Tyla's headline performance at Tipsy Music Festival 2025 is set to be a highlight of the summer. Mahushu artist celebrates African heritage with new single

A local kwaito and amapiano artist has released a new single, 'Badikoma', which seeks to celebrate the significance of communal festivities and traditions in South Africa. Lwazi Chauke (24), stage name Tboy Lwazi, released the song in close collaboration with a local producer, SK Lapho, on May 16. He said the song captures the essence of African heritage, focusing on the culturally important practices surrounding the journey to the mountains, the initiation school also known as ingoma. 'This tradition is cherished by many cultures and this song honours the celebration that follows when individuals return from the mountain with moments filled with joy, connection and community spirit.' He said the new single features a line-up of talented local artists, including Abo Khahlamba, Phici and Roman Power, each bringing their flair to the collaborative masterpiece. 'I was taught how to write songs by my uncle, Dumisani Mabilane. Later, I realised how much I love music and decided to do research on which steps to take next,' he said. 'Some of my music career highlights include winning Best Hip-Hop Album at the Mpumalanga Hip-Hop Music Awards last year. The album is called Evolve. My music has also received airplay on Ligwalagwala FM.' Chauke said his dream is to be famous and have his own record label, through which he will help talented upcoming artists in the province. Filmmaker Thapelo Motloung launches Soweto Film Market, honouring a legacy

The launch was held at the Eyethu Heritage Hall in Soweto on Thursday afternoon. The uprising of youth in Soweto in 1976 was a protest against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools. In addition to that, the remonstration was also against apartheid's chokehold on young black people's dreams. On Thursday, just a few days to the day that the historic protest took place 49 years ago, a young filmmaker from Soweto, Thapelo Motloung, launched the Soweto Film Market in the township—something that very few people could see nearly 50 years ago. 'We are free today because they had to fight, and for me to have a voice. I'm here today, 26 years old, and we are making this happen in Soweto. We've changed the narrative; we are innovators, we are change makers,' Motloung said, speaking to The Citizen. The Soweto Film Market has joined forces with the long-standing Soweto International Film Festival (SIFF). The market is born from SIFF's mission to elevate African voices. The Market is where creativity meets commerce. 'Teboho Mashinini, Hector Pieterson and them are in our history during this month, so it is also a commemoration to the heroes that have fallen.' The Soweto Film Market and SIFF will take place from November 19 to 22, 2025. ALSO READ: Playing Dad: How film speaks to fathers' desires and struggles of fatherhood Rewriting the future of African film Together with SIFF, the Soweto Film Market is rewriting the future of African film. 'How many other Thapelos are out there looking for platforms?… I've been rejected a lot of times and at a number of places,' he shares. 'The whole idea was, how do I service a Thapelo somewhere, someone who is trying to get into the industry,' Motloung says. 'Soweto did not have a market necessarily, and we're such a big township that is known globally. Coming up with a market was a matter of saying 'why don't we have trade in Soweto' because that's where the two Nobel Prize winners are from,' says Motloung, referring to the significance of the township. Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu are the two Nobel winners who resided on the same street in Soweto. He says the market is aimed at filmmakers, where workshops will be held, and industry skills will be shared. 'We have the festival side of things, where we're premiering a film every night here at Eyethu. During the day, we're at Soweto Theatre and in the evening we're here premiering first-time films at Eyethu cinema, which is the oldest cinema in Africa.' Located in Mofolo Soweto, Eyethu is one of the first black-owned cinemas in South Africa and a historic venue in Soweto, where memorable shows and funeral services of Soweto's most prominent were held. 'When you go through the venue, you get to realise that someone started and someone needs to take the baton — I'm here to take the baton,' said Motloung.
