Luis Rubiales found guilty of kissing Jenni Hermoso without consent at World Cup

Independent20-02-2025

The former president of the Spanish soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, has been found guilty of kissing Jenni Hermoso without consent.
Rubiales was accused of sexual assault after he kissed forward Hermoso while celebrating Spain's victory at the Women's World Cup final 2023. On Thursday a court returned its verdict, but cleared him of coercion. He has been ordered to pay a fine worth more than 10,000 euros.
The trial began on Monday 3 February in Madrid's High Court as Rubiales was charged with sexual assault. Three co-defendants, former Spain women's national team coach Jorge Vilda, former sports director of Spain's men's team Albert Luque, and the federation's former head of marketing, Rubén Rivera, were also charged with coercion.
Ms Hermoso argued that she 'never' consented to Rubiales' advances. 'I didn't hear or understand anything. The next thing he did was to grab me by the ears and kiss me on the mouth.'
She said the moment had 'tainted one of the happiest days of my life.'
Forced to resign and banned by FIFA, Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the kiss was consensual and he has been a victim of a 'witch hunt' by 'false feminists.'
Rubiales said he was "absolutely sure" Ms Hermoso gave him consent.
"I asked her: 'Can I give you a little kiss?' She said: 'all right.' That's what happened," Rubiales told the court.
The judge claimed there was evidence that Rubiales unsuccessfully pressured Ms Hermoso to appear in a video he produced and published while public outrage over his actions mounted. They said there was also reason to believe Vilda likewise pressured Ms Hermoso's brother, and Luque and Rivera were involved in the alleged attempt at coercion.
Captured on the world stage, as millions watched the match against England on television, the kiss sparked widespread outrage globally. Rubiales also grabbed his crotch in the moment, while standing near Spain's Queen Letizia and Princess Sofia.
It became a part of Spain's own MeToo movement, called #SeAcabó or 'It's Over', which saw a number of protests take place across the country, including in Rubiales' hometown of Motril as a counter protest after his mother Ángeles Béjar announced a hunger strike against the "inhumane and bloodthirsty hunt" against her son.

Tottenham sack Robert Vilahamn after poor WSL season as summer of change continues

Tottenham have sacked women's first team head coach Robert Vilahamn after two years in charge. Vilahamn led the club to an FA Cup final in his first season at the club alongside a sixth place finish but Tottenham have decided to part ways with the 42-year-old after Spurs finished second-bottom in the Women's Super League this campaign. The Swedish coach joined in 2023 and was handed a three-year contract extension last July but only relegated Crystal Palace conceded more goals than Vilahamn's side in a disappointing season. Tottenham managing director Andy Rogers said: 'There have been some special moments during Robert's tenure, including reaching the FA Cup final for the first time. 'However, results and performances this season have not been to the level we would expect and now is the right time to make a change. 'We should like to thank Robert for his professionalism and efforts over the past two seasons, and we wish him well for the future.' The decision leaves Spurs seeking new managers for both their men's and women's teams after Ange Postecoglou was sacked on Friday. Thomas Frank is the favourite to succeed the Australian, who led the club to Europa League triumph to end their long wait for a trophy. Key Daniel Levy lieutenant Donna-Maria Cullen has also departed in a summer of change in north London.

Gunn went off injured after just a couple of minutes against Iceland and McCrorie was hurt in the warm-up on Friday. It meant Ipswich Town's third choice goalkeeper Cieran Slicker was called upon but it was a debut to forget for the 22-year-old. Slicker had just played nine minutes of football last season and came on in Gunn's place in the 3-1 defeat to Iceland but nerves got the better of him as he made two big blunders. Clarke said after the game on Friday: "Angus and Robby are both out. 'Angus hurt his ankle and Robby has a thigh injury. 'Craig Gordon is injured, Liam Kelly is injured, Zander Clake in injured. 'Now Angus Gunn is injured and Robby McCrorie is injured. 'Fortunately we had young Callan McKenna in training with us this week so he'll join the squad. 'I'll also have a little scout around and see if anybody is not on the beach and is available to come.' Tartan Army fan who walked to Germany embarking on new challenge for the World Cup Doohan made 18 appearances for Aberdeen last season and is being tipped with a return to Celtic in the summer after leaving the club in 2022 for Tranmere Rovers. The 27-year-old, who is out of contract, has also played for Ayr United, Ross County, Dundee United and Forest Green Rovers. McKenna is on the books at Bournemouth after signing from Queen's Park in a deal worth around £300,000 in February 2024. The 18-year-old made his debut when he was just 16 at the Spiders and would go on to make nine appearances, seven in the Scottish Championship. Harry Kane admits England 'got away with it' in Andorra win

England were booed by many of the 6,950 travelling fans after a scoreless first half against Andorra, with further jeers greeting the final whistle after Tuchel's men failed to kick on from Kane's 50th-minute goal. The candid head coach felt the Euro 2024 runners-up 'played with fire' due to their lack of 'seriousness and urgency', with the skipper sharing similar sentiments. 'It wasn't our greatest performance,' Kane said. 'I don't think it's one many people are going to remember, that's for sure, but it's three points in the bag. 'But, yeah, for sure we know we can play better in all aspects, both with and without the ball. Read more: Steve Clarke calls up two uncapped goalkeepers as Scotland SOS answered Iceland keeper tells Cieran Slicker exactly how to bounce back from Scotland errors 'It's down to us now to go analyse it, look back and try and learn from it because condition-wise it's going to be very similar to next summer – dry pitch, warm weather, humid. 'We were just lacking quality, looked a bit fatigued both physically and mentally and, yeah, we got away with it because we're a good team and they had a couple of half-chances there where we didn't get punished. But ultimately, it wasn't good enough.' Kane has scored in all three matches under Tuchel, his former manager at Bayern Munich, with the latest effort extending England's all-time top scorer's record goal haul to 72. Noni Madueke capped a man-of-the-match display by providing the cross for the winner and the captain felt this kind of match cried out for the directness of a talent like the Chelsea winger. 'He was really good today,' Kane said as attention turns to Tuesday's friendly against Senegal. 'I think in these type of games, you need players like Noni who are good one-v-one to sometimes make a difference. 'It's a dry pitch, not easy to move the ball quickly, so sometimes you rely on individual quality and I thought he was probably our best outlet today. 'The goal itself was probably our best move of the game in terms of how we wanted to play, more in terms of Curt (Jones) getting on it and playing the forward pass to me, and then obviously the rebound and back across. 'It was probably our best move and we just didn't have enough of that, both with probably the runs and also the quality – a lot of balls kind of overhit, out of play, and it just kind of killed our momentum, especially there in the second half.'
