Former astronaut twin brothers Mark and Scott Kelly on NASA cuts and challenges of being on ISS
Hours before Thursday's SpaceX launch, they spoke to "CBS Mornings" about NASA cuts, the challenges of being at the International Space Station and the spaceflight.
NASA is set to lose 20% of its workforce as part of the president's efforts to cut spending. Sen. Mark Kelly, a Democratic lawmaker from Arizona, said he's been working with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy about the path forward for NASA.
Duffy is also serving as the temporary NASA administrator after the White House pulled the nomination earlier this month for billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, who was backed by Elon Musk.
"We always want to retain the best people. That's critical to any program across government, but also in the private sector," the senator said. "Often projects and programs and agencies have to undergo some change. I think this is a time with some change right now, but NASA is a resilient and innovative agency."
Next year, the Artemis II mission is scheduled to take astronauts around the moon.
NASA is launching a fresh crew to the International Space Station around 12:09 p.m. ET Thursday aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. That time is roughly the moment Earth's rotation carries the Falcon 9 rocket into alignment with the space station's orbit. The crew includes three fliers who were assigned to the flight after NASA ran into issues with Boeing's troubled Starliner capsule last year.
Aboard Thursday's SpaceX flight is Col. Michael Fincke, a former crewmate of Mark Kelly.
"Mike and my brother and I, we were all classmates. Got to NASA in 1996," Mark Kelly said.
Fincke and Mark Kelly were both on the space shuttle Endeavour's final mission.
"Now this is the next time he's going back into space 14 years later. So I just had to be here, to be here for him and his family and watch him launch up to the space station just one more time," Mark Kelly said.
He admitted laughingly that he is a little jealous, saying, "you go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour in about 8 minutes and then dock with this incredible space station on orbit. It is an experience like none other."
There is currently no date scheduled for the SpaceX Dragon Crew to return.
Scott Kelly said the most challenging part of being at the ISS is being separated "from everything that Earth has to offer."
"Earth's an amazing planet and you are separated from the … weather, you are separated from your family. You are separated from all these things that you hold dear," he said.

Agency Scrutinizes Jack Smith After Republican Complaint
An agency that scrutinizes the conduct of federal employees has opened an investigation into Jack Smith, the former special counsel who investigated Donald J. Trump before he returned to office, following a request by a Republican senator. The Office of Special Counsel confirmed on Saturday that it had opened an investigation into Mr. Smith for a possible violation of the Hatch Act, a law that prohibits federal workers from using their government jobs to engage in political activity. Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, had asked the agency to investigate on the premise that some of Mr. Smith's actions, such as seeking quick trial dates in the two criminal cases against Mr. Trump, were designed to influence the 2024 election. The investigation, which was first reported by The New York Post, is unusual in several respects. First, the most severe penalty possible for a Hatch Act violation is dismissal from federal employment, and Mr. Smith left the government at the start of the year. Second, the type of prosecutorial decisions criticized by Mr. Cotton, Mr. Trump and others are far different from the type of cases the O.S.C. typically handles. The office traditionally investigates and addresses violations of federal rules about the civil service. The investigation comes at a time when lawyers representing fired or demoted federal employees have complained that under Mr. Trump, the O.S.C. is not fulfilling its traditional role. In February, the president dismissed the agency's head, Hampton Dellinger, despite a federal law saying that person can only be fired for 'inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office.' Launch officials called the scrub just over a minute before liftoff, due to a bank of cumulus clouds that appeared over in the skies over NASA's Kennedy Space Center here. "Unfortunately, the weather is just not playing alongside with today's excitement on the launch for NASA SpaceX's Crew-11," NASA commentator Derrol Nail said during today's launch coverage. "We could literally see the clouds kind of going over top of our heads, getting close to the pad, and the standoff area is a 10-mile radius around the pad for these dark clouds, cumulous clouds, and that is a safety factor," Nail added. "That is because you don't want to send a rocket through a tall cloud like that — that could generate some energy from the rocket passing through it." SpaceX will try again on Friday (Aug. 1) at 11:43 a.m. EDT (1543 GMT). There's another chance on Saturday (Aug. 2) at 11:21 a.m. EDT (1521 GMT). When it launches, Crew-11 will see a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket take off from Launch Complex 39A at KSC. Atop the rocket is the company's Crew Dragon Endeavour spacecraft making its sixth flight, a reuse record for Crew Dragon vehicles. The four crewmembers of Crew-11 are NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Oleg Platonov of Russia's space agency Roscosmos. When it launches, Crew-11 will embark on a roughly 40-hour flight to catch up with the International Space Station, orbiting at a speed of about 17,500 mph (28,000 kph) some 248 miles (400 kilometers) above the surface of Earth.
