After months of promotional build up, we finally have a trailer for "The Smashing Machine", the sports biopic starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as UFC legend Mark Kerr. Emily Blunt co-stars as Kerr's then-wife Dawn Staples. You can watch the trailer below, and count how many times you can barely recognize Dwayne Johnson.

"The Smashing Machine" actually started its life as a 2002 HBO documentary of the same name directed by John Hyams. The doc chronicled Kerr's mixed martial arts career as well as his addiction to painkillers.

Following his success in Brazil's World Vale Tudo Championship, Kerr was invited to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) where he won the UFC 14 Heavyweight tournament title by defeating Dan Bobish after a little more than a minute and a half. He would go on to likewise win the UFC 15 championship after a similarly swift defeat of Dwayne Cason.
After UFC 15, Kerr went to Japan to participate in their Pride Fighting Championships. Initially meeting with some success, a number of big losses convinced Kerr to take a break. Returning in 2004 for Pride 27, Kerr was soundly defeated by Yoshisha Yamamoto.
Kerr made attempts at numerous comebacks between 2006 and 2009, none of which lasted long. By 2019 Kerr was separated from Dawn Staples, working at a Toyota dealership, and a GoFundMe had been set up for him to help with medical costs to help combat his peripheral neuropathy.
As for Dwayne Johnson, "The Rock" always has a full plated including starring in the live-action "Moana". Johnson originated the voice role of the demi-god Maui in the 2016 animated film and he's returning to play the character in the live-action remake. He's also expected to return as Hobbs in "Fast X: Part 2" as well as his own spinoff film; something in the vein of 2019's "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw". There are also sequels in development for "Jungle Cruise" and "San Andreas".
Emily Blunt will presumably be joining Johnsons both in "Jungle Cruise 2" and in whatever untitled Hawaiian crime drama Martin Scorsese has cast them both in. She's also expected to return to the role of Emily in "The Devil Wears Prada 2".
"The Smashing Machine" is written and directed by Benny Safdie. The film releases in theaters October 3, 2025.

The Legend of Zelda Movie Delayed, but Not for Too Long
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors It was just a couple of months ago that the release date for The Legend of Zelda live-action movie was announced, but already things are changing as it has now been delayed from its original date of March 26, 2027 to May 7, 2027 instead. The Legend of Zelda movie logo The Legend of Zelda movie logo Nintendo Very little is known about the movie yet, aside from the release date and the fact that it will be a live-action depiction of Link and Zelda's adventures in Hyrule. There are some rumours about the Zelda movie's cast, but nothing ironclad as of yet, so what this movie looks like is still up in the air. This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it… — 任天堂株式会社 (@Nintendo) June 9, 2025 Despite this, there has clearly been some small hitch in production as Nintendo's Twitter account gave a statement earlier today from Shigeru Miyamoto – Game designer, producer, and director at Nintendo and the original creator of The Legend of Zelda series – explaining that the film's release date has been delayed "for production reasons". The statement doesn't give any detail as to what those reasons are, but Miyamoto has promised that it's all in service of making the film "as good as it can be", so there's very little we can do right now but wait and see.

Author Heartbroken After Empty Book Signing Gets Big Surprise
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When no one showed up to author Caytlyn Brooke's recent book signing in New York, the internet surprised her in a positive way. Newsweek has reached out to Brooke for comment via TikTok on Monday. The Context Brooke, known for her dark fantasy novels, is a graduate of the University at Albany, where she majored in psychology with a focus on fear stimuli. "My books revolve around dark topics such as abandonment, addiction, and sexual assault because I am very passionate about spreading awareness to bring about more knowledge and aide to these marginalized groups," the bio on her website reads. What To Know On Saturday, Brooke took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a now-viral post about the empty book signing. "No one showed up for my book reading event," she wrote. "I know this happens and I'm trying really hard to keep it together but I feel terrible that the shop stayed open to host me for nothing." At the time of publication, her X post racked up more than 21.5 million views, 395,000 likes and over 9,700 comments. No one showed up for my book reading event. I know this happens and I'm trying really hard to keep it together but I feel terrible that the shop stayed open to host me for nothing. — Caytlyn Brooke (@caytlyn_brooke) June 6, 2025 The author then revealed additional details in a separate post shared to TikTok, with Taylor Swift's "Cardigan" playing in the background of her video. "Tonight I was invited to do a book signing at a local shop! Montour Falls Tea Company is right off Main Street in Montour Falls, New York. They support local artisans, creatives, and promote events in the community," she told her more than 9,600 TikTok followers. "I was thrilled to meet new readers and talk books, but the entire two hours, no one showed. I understand this happens, but it was really gutting. If you're in the area, be sure to check out this cozy shop." Currently, her video has over 1,700 views, 282 likes and 89 comments. @caytlynbrooke_author there are no words for how sad I am but at least there's chocolate ♬ cardigan - Taylor Swift Nearly 24 hours after posting her viral message, Brooke took to X again to share that she was "blown away" by people's "kindness." "I am blown away by the amount of kindness this community has shown me in the last 24 hours. Failure is part of any success and without it, victory wouldn't taste so sweet. A huge thank you to everyone who has purchased copies of my books and raised me up. It means the world," she wrote alongside a photo of herself smiling. What People Are Saying In the comments on both TikTok and X, Brooke responded to many fans' messages of support. TikTok user @raymondcasillas0 wrote: "You gotta work with your mentality: accept beforehand it's a book thing (writers are not precisely rock stars, no matter how popular), so don't expect nobody, just go and have fun, know the place, the owners, and if it happens then cheers! There might be a day when you actually hope no one shows up for so many signings, questions, pics... next time bring someone so you don't sit by yourself. You got this!" In response, Brooke wrote: "I love this. The shop owner and I had a wonderful time chatting and munching on snacks!" TikTok user @kwebsterbooks posted: "It happens to all of us. It's good practice. Sometimes people just don't know about the event or forget. Don't let it discourage you for future ones." Brooke replied: "Exactly. We tried to advertise for weeks but the stars just didn't align today." TikTok's @authoraefaulkner voiced: "Looks like a really cool store. Sorry no one came." Brooke posted: "Thank you. Sarah the owner is amazing! she makes all her own loose leaf teas!" X user @Pete_RP_ added in a note with 11,000 views and 207 likes: "Your vulnerability and authenticity is what this world needs more of." Brooke responded back in a comment with 7,600 views and 65 likes: "This community is so wonderful. I'm honored to be the recipient of so many kind messages." What Happens Next? On Sunday, Brooke encouraged people on X to reach out to her for book recommendations. "I've been getting lots of requests about what my books are about so I hope this helps," she wrote. "If I don't write your favorite genre, let me know & I'd love to share some indie recs from other wonderful authors!"

Tired Mom Offers Kids Money To Go To Sleep, Laughter At What Happens Next
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. A tired mom resorted to desperate measures at bedtime in a bid to her kids off to sleep, but it didn't have the desired effect. Parenting can be exhausting, not least when it comes to bedtime. Last year, a survey of over 1,500 parents conducted by the mattress retailer Sleepopolis found 71.91 per cent of respondents got less than 7 hours of sleep 3 nights a week or more. Nicole Bell from Fort Myers, Florida, is one of those parents. In many ways her life sounds like the kind most would dream of. "My husband and I have known each other since we were 6 as neighbors and I was and still am his sister's best friend," Bell told Newsweek. "We started dating when we were 16, and now we have 3 little girls, aged 7, 4, and 2 and a 13 year old dog." Nicole Bell offered her daughters money to go to sleep. Nicole Bell offered her daughters money to go to sleep. TikTok/thataverageparent However, as is often the case with young children, bedtime can occasionally turn into a nightmare. In Bell's case, the main culprit is their middle child. "The oldest is a decent sleeper, the youngest actually has been our best sleeper," Bell. "The 4 year old takes a solid hour and a half to fall asleep then wakes up at 3am to crawl into our bed." Matters came to a head one night recently. Bell's two eldest daughters, who share a room, were in bed but still very much awake. So, in moment captured on a nearby baby cam and later shared to TikTok under the handle @thataverageparent, Bell decided to up the ante. "Whoever's asleep first gets a dollar in the morning," Bell states as she leaves the room, hoping against all hope that it has the desired effect. But it's the hope that kills you. "At this point my husband had gone out for a run after putting the 2 year old to bed and I just wanted to get to bed myself so I was pulling out all the tricks," Bell said. "I went in, offered the dollar, then took a quick shower and came back to check on them." She hoped to return to find them both fast asleep. However, as the clip posted online shows, that wasn't the case. "The 7 year old was fast asleep, as I expected, but the 4 year old- not so much," Bell said. Instead her 4-year-old was wide awake and ready to explain why that was the case. "I can't sleep because the ninjas got my sleeping power," Bell's daughter can be heard saying on the clip. "So can you just give me a dollar in the morning?" "Her favorite show currently is PJ Masks, which has a villain called the Night Ninja and his sidekicks are Ninjalinos which is where her comeback originated from," she said. Bell said this is only the second time she had tried bribing her kids to go to sleep. "I honestly wasn't expecting the 4 year old to fall asleep, but I hoped she would," Bell said. "Really the goal was to give the oldest motivation to stop talking, because once she actually tries to fall asleep, she is out fast and then I would only have one awake kid left." Bell shared the footage to TikTok because her daughter's response made her laugh and she figured others would find it amusing too. "She's such a big goofball with a huge imagination that that response didn't even phase me as out of the ordinary," Bell said. The clip appears to have had the desired effect, with over 400,000 views and counting since being shared earlier this month. "I hope people just see it for what it is, a mom trying to make it until the end of the day, and not look too deep into it," Bell said. "I hope parents know that whatever they are doing to get by, however many real or metaphorical dollars they need to bribe kids with, they are doing a great job!"
