Craig Charles had been due to appear at London Film and Comic-Con on Sunday, July 6.
The actor, 60, played Lloyd Mullaney on the cobbles and before that, lead character Dave Lister in BBC sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf.
Fans of Red Dwarf had hoped to see Craig alongside co-stars Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn and Hattie Hayridge.
Taking to Facebook, the event shared: "We contacted Craig at 9am to be be told that due to a family emergency he would not be in until 11am.
"At 11.30am we spent 20 minutes knocking on his hotel room door where there was no answer.
"His Red Dwarf colleagues were able to contact him at 12.30 where he confirmed he was ill and unable to attend. These are the facts."
They added: "The Group shot will go ahead with Danny, Robert and Hattie and ticket holders will receive an automatic £60 refund to allow for the change of line up.
"If anybody does not want the group shot, any unused tickets will automatically be refunded after the show."
Later in the day, Craig took to social media and shared an update on the situation.
He wrote on X: "I'd just like to say sorry to showmasters and the fans at comicon.
Huge Channel 4 gameshow axed despite massive ratings and very famous presenter
"I made it to the hotel but woke up at 3 this morning with stomach pains.
"I then proceeded to be violently ill for hours. Not a pretty sight.
"I tried to see if it would wear off but at 10 am I called it off and came back to Manchester."
Craig added: "I'm feeling slightly better now and I'm drinking lots of water and electrolytes.
"Again sorry for the cancellation and I look forward to next time."
It followed Red Dwarf co-star Chris Barrie - who played Arnold Rimmer - cancelling a string of public appearances due to a "medical situation".
Posting on his website, the star shared: "Hello everyone.
"I'm going to be brief, but over the last week I have been dealing with a medical situation which I am only just beginning to get my head around.
'In the light of this I shall be attending no more events over the summer and into the autumn.
Red Dwarf cast members
Sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf first aired on BBC2 in 1988 and ran until 1999, before it moved to UKTV channel Dave ten years later.
Its cast members include: Craig Charles as Dave Lister
Chris Barrie as Arnold Rimmer
Danny John-Jules as Cat
Robert Llewellyn as Kryten
Norman Lovett/Hatty Hayridge as Holly
"Updates on all this will be issued as and when.'
Chris confirmed he would be keeping his November 9 appearance at Newcastle comedy event Scarborough Unleashed in the calendar for the time being.
He explained: "In the meantime I shall leave Scarborough on the itinerary for now and will look forward to returning there in the early winter.
"Obviously I shall miss not being with the posse in London this Sunday but I'm afraid that is the way it is. Enjoy!'

The Celtic-daft singer-songwriter was dressed in a replica Hoops top, black Nike shorts, and Adidas trainers. The hitmaker looked relaxed as he made his way into the building lobby. Later, he chatted with the host Jimmy Fallon and performed his new single, Survive, onstage. During his appearance on the popular network show, Lewis joked that country music legend Dolly Parton couldn't understand a word he was saying when they recently crossed paths in Nashville, Tennessee. But he revealed that the awkward moment was still "better than meeting the Queen". Lewis told the host: "I did a little show In Nashville last week and I got to meet Dolly. 'It was great, she was lovely. She really struggled to understand what I was saying as most people in America do. 'But she was very polite and it was a bit of a dream come true. 'That's like meeting the Queen or something. Better than meeting the Queen actually, yeah I said it.' Lewis Capaldi breaks silence on emotional Glastonbury return after taking a break from music It comes after the singer, from Whitburn, West Lothian, described his emotional return to Glastonbury as the best day of his life. Lewis performed a surprise set on the Pyramid stage last month, two years after being unable to finish his set on the same stage when he struggled to manage the symptoms of his Tourette syndrome. Following the 2023 performance, he called off his world tour to address his mental and physical health - a move he described as 'the most difficult decision of my life'. He said: 'It was terrifying. In the lead-up to it I was like 'This is horrific, I made a terrible decision'. 4 Lewis donned a Celtic top as he dropped by NBC Studios for his appearance Credit: Getty 'And then I went out and we did it and it was really beautiful and lovely and it went exactly how I hoped. 'It was probably the best day of my life. 'I assume when I have a child I might be like 'Well maybe Glastonbury was still better'.' Describing his previous experience at Glastonbury in 2023, Lewis said: 'The first time did not go well. I had a mental breakdown on stage. 'I have Tourette's so I used to tic quite a lot. I still do tic but I used to do this thing with my shoulder and it became really uncontrollable and I had a panic attack on stage at Glastonbury and I couldn't finish the song. 'It had happened a couple of times before at shows but because this one was so publicised and there were so many eyes on it it really made me think 'Oh God I really need to go and get myself sorted, I can't really keep doing this to myself'.' The Glasto comeback set also featured a subtle nod to Lewis' beloved footie side as eagle-eyed fans spotted Celtic-themed guitar plectrums on stage. And he's regularly seen proudly donning Celtic shirts, including on one occasion last year where he ventured out for a walk in London in the Celts' black away kit. Lewis' new hit Survive has rocketed to number one in the UK singles chart. But he joked to the US audience that the tune was "underperforming" across the pond and urged them to buy it. Lewis recently announced a partnership with BetterHelp which will see him give fans 734,000 hours of free therapy - 1,000 for each of the days he couldn't perform due to poor mental health. He said therapy was 'a massive part of the reason that I'm able to be a musician again'. Lewis will go on a huge UK tour in the autumn, with dates at Glasgow's OVO Hydro and Aberdeen's P&J Live.
