Afghan hero Naib flexes muscles as Dubai Capitals reach ILT20 final

Khaleej Times05-02-2025

It was not cricket, but bodybuilding which grabbed Gulbadin Naib's attention while he was growing up. And his role model was none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Hollywood strongman.
Eventually, Naib turned to cricket, rising through the ranks before playing a key role in the war-torn Afghanistan's stunning rise in the sport at global level.
The 33-year-old batting all-rounder was in the thick of the action again on Wednesday night under the iconic 'Ring of Fire' in Dubai.
Chasing 190 against the Desert Vipers in the Qualifier 1 at the ILT20, Dubai Capitals lost their first wicket in the seventh over after a good start.
Naib walked in at 51 for one and departed with with his team needing one off one ball in a dramatic final over which saw Lockie Ferguson, the Kiwi pacer, leave the field with an injury.
Sikandar Raza, the Zimbabwean batter, held his nerve to finish the match with a superb four off Mohammad Amir, who came on to bowl the last ball of the match following Ferguson's injury.
Raza punched the air after that match-winning boundary as the Capitals clinched the last-ball thriller by five wickets to book their place in Sunday's final.
But it was Naib who was the hero for the Dubai team who were missing their talisman David Warner due to a back injury.
Naib (62 off 39 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) paced his innings superbly to set up a well-deserved victory for the Capitals.
It was the fourth half-century of this campaign for the fearless Afghan batter who will now hope to produce another big knock in Sunday's final at the same stadium.
Earlier, Alex Hales made a sparkling 67 off 32 balls as the Vipers, the table-toppers, made 189 for seven in 20 overs.
Capitals captain Sam Billings (38 off 16 balls), opener Adam Rossington (44 off 31 balls) and Rovman Powell (20 off 13 balls) chipped in with useful knocks, but it was Naib, who had also taken two crucial wickets and three catches, was named man-of-the-match.
'When you played a good game in the past, you remind yourself of that. I was reminded of the previous fifties I got," said Naib of his two previous half-centuries against the Vipers in the league phase.
"I can play at any position. Number three now is my lucky number. I have opened as well so I can bat anywhere.
"We played a lot of cricket here in Dubai. It was a pressure game, and I love pressure games. With the ball, I used the surface. I used my variations a lot.'
Vipers captain Ferguson said the dew in the evening made it hard for his bowlers to defend the total.
'It was a tough night. It was a great game of cricket, obviously dew came on and made the game difficult for us," the New Zealander said.
"We were unfortunate not to have come out on top. I thought it was a great total but it's T20 cricket."
On Thursday, Sharjah Warriorz will face defending champions MI Emirates in the Eliminator.
The winner of this contest will face Desert Vipers in Qualifier 2 on Friday for the right to play Dubai Capitals in Sunday's final.
Brief scores:
Dubai Capitals beat Desert Vipers by five wickets
Desert Vipers 189/7 in 20 overs (Alex Hales 67, Max Holden 36, Dan Lawrence 35, Gulbadin Naib 2 for 25, Qais Ahmad 2 for 29)
Dubai Capitals 193/5 in 20 overs (Gulbadin Naib 62, Adam Rossington 44, Sam Billings 38, Lockie Ferguson 2 for 32, David Payne 1 for 31)

Rohit scores 81 as Mumbai eliminate Gujarat to keep IPL final hopes alive

Rohit Sharma's 81, coupled with the experience of bowlers Trent Boult (2-56) and Jasprit Bumrah (1-27) proved pivotal for Mumbai Indians claiming a spot in Qualifier 2, with a 20-run win over Gujarat Titans in Eliminator match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday. In their chase of 229, Gujarat Titans scored 208/6 in 20 overs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. With no Jos Buttler in the batting order, Shubman Gill (1) really needed to fire but fell to Boult's opening spell. With a massive chase ahead, the Kiwi pacer caught Gill plumb in front, which was confirmed after an unsuccessful review by GT, to start on the right foot. After a fiery opening two overs by Boult and Bumrah, Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis (20) began to shift gears and started an onslaught of their own. Sudarsan began proceedings by flicking Boult for six before Mendis, replacing Buttler, struck the left-arm pacer for consecutive maximums. The left-handed opener displayed an array of shots and carved the Mumbai pace attack through the gaps to all parts of the ground. Hardik Pandya decided to bowl for the first time in the power-play but was hit for three boundaries. Mendis found himself in no-man's land on the final ball of the power-play, after a mix-up while running, but Raj Bawa missed the stumps as GT reached 66/1, with the fielding restrictions being lifted. However, Mendis' horror night, despite a solid batting innings, which began with him dropping two catches, ended with him hitting his stumps. The Sri Lanka batter attempted to sweep Mitchell Santner, but his leg slipped and he knocked over his stumps. Sudharsan raised his sixth half-century of the season in 28 deliveries, and crossed the 700-run mark for the season, while Washington Sundar (48) settled into the crease. Despite the fall in wickets, Gujarat's run rate continued to match the high requirement. Sundar began to ramp up his innings with a four and a six off Pandya, both off low full-toss deliveries, before smashing consecutive sixes in an 18-run Trent Boult over. With Gujarat nearing the 150 mark in 13 overs, Hardik needed his most trusted bowler to end the partnership, which was approaching the 100-run mark, and Bumrah did it in typical fashion. The pacer bowled a scintillating yorker, which Sundar had no answer to. The ball castled into stumps, leaving the all-rounder on the floor. Sherfane Rutherford (24) began with a bang and struck three boundaries before Gleeson ended Sudharsan's night. The Englishman, who replaced Corbin Bosch, claimed the important wicket of Sudharsan, who was bowled over by a yorker while attempting a scoop shot. Ashwani Kumar and Bumrah restricted boundaries to a minimum, with nine runs each coming off the subsequent overs, with Rahul Tewatia (16) claiming a towering maximum over the latter. With the pressure rising and 36 needed off 12, Boult served it right in the slot, but Rutherford, connecting with the toe end of the bat, holed it straight to Tilak Varma at deep mid-wicket. With 30 needed off seven, it seemed the result was certain before Shahrukh Khan (13) struck a massive six off the Kiwi to revive the crowd. Gleeson was trusted with the final six deliveries, but he cramped up while running in and was only able to bowl three, in which he conceded as many runs. Ashwani Kumar finished the remaining spell, whilst also dismissing Shahrukh to seal the 20-run victory. After surprisingly opting to bat first, Rohit and Jonny Bairstow (47) set the platform as Mumbai Indians posted a massive total of 228/5 in 20 overs. Rohit's innings, which showcased his brute force and ability to cross the boundary at ease, was laced with nine boundaries and four sixes. However, it was not a perfect one as the former India skipper was dropped twice on the day, in what can only be described as a poor outing for the 2022 winners in the field. His first lifeline came when he was batting on three runs. Rohit pulled towards Gerald Coetzee in the deep, which the Proteas player fumbled through his hands. In the very next over, Rohit showed why Gujarat can't afford to give him a lifeline as he struck Mohammed Siraj for consecutive boundaries. Agencies Brief scores : Mumbai Indians 228/5 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma 81, Jonny Bairstow 47, Suryakumar Yadav 33; Sai Kishore 2-42, Prasidh Krishna 2-53) beat Gujarat Titans 208/6 in 20 overs (Sai Sudharsan 80, Washington Sundar 48; Trent Boult 2-56, Jasprit Bumrah 1-27) by 20 runs

Journeyman Raza blasts Lahore Qalandars to PSL title

Lahore Qalandars won the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with a six-wicket win against Quetta Gladiators on Sunday night, with Sikandar Raza hitting the winning runs after only landing back in Lahore minutes prior to the start of the final. The 39-year old Zimbabwean landed in Lahore just ten minutes before the toss, after scoring a half century in his country's innings defeat in the Nottingham Test against England a day before. Needing 13 in the last over to complete a 202-run chase set by Quetta, Raza completed the task during his seven-ball 22 not out with two sixes and as many boundaries. Sikandar Raza (L) celebrates with teammates their victory at the end of the PSL. AFP He hit a maximum and a four in the last over to seal the victory with one ball remaining. Sri Lankan Kusal Perera led the chase with an undefeated 31-ball 62 studded with five boundaries and four sixes, adding 59 runs during the unbroken fifth wicket stand. Opener Mohammad Naeem scored 46, with half a dozen sixes and one boundary, and Abdullah Shafique hit 41 to set Lahore on course for the highest-ever chase in a PSL final. President Asif Ali Zardari (3rdR) hands over the trophy to Shaheen Shah Afridi. AFP Lahore sealed their third title following triumphs in 2022 and 2023. Raza said it was unbelievable to reach Lahore and achieve success. "It is unbelievable, batted for 40-odd overs in the Test, flew to Dubai where I had breakfast and then lunch in Abu Dhabi and arrived minutes from the toss, so it's incredible," he said. Hasan Nawaz scored a brilliant 76 to lift Quetta to 201-9 after they won the toss and batted. Coming in at 21-2, Nawaz added 67 for the fourth wicket with Avishka Fernando (29) and another 46 with Dinesh Chandimal (22) to steady the ship. Lahore Qalanders' players carry teammate Sikandar Raza as they celebrate after their victory in the PSL. AFP Lahore skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi was the pick of Lahore's bowlers with 3-24. Quetta mystery spinners Abrar Ahmed (1-27) and Usman Tariq (1-38) had squeezed Lahore and when Raza arrived the home team still needed 57 runs off the final 20 balls. It was Faheem Ashraf (28) who lifted Quetta past 200, taking 23 off the last Salman Mirza over. The six-team PSL was suspended on May 9 following the conflict between Pakistan and India. However, the league resumed on May 17 after a ceasefire between the two countries. Lahore Qalandars won the PSL titles in 2022 and 2023 and with its third win equaled Islamabad United's record of three PSL titles. Agencies

England reveal their playing XI for the Zimbabwe Test

Essex seamer Sam Cook will make his Test debut at Trent Bridge as England kickstart their home summer on Thursday, May 22, with a one-off Test against Zimbabwe, who last played against them in 2003. England's top order remains pretty much the same as the one that played against New Zealand in their previous Test series late last year, with Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root and Harry Brook forming their batting core. Ben Stokes, whose presence feels like a catalyst to lift the side, according to the head coach Brendon McCullum, is back after nursing a hamstring injury and will be leading the side. Jamie Smith will be behind the wickets and the young offie Shoaib Bashir makes it into the XI as well. Along with Gus Atkinson, the pace attack is expected to be led by Josh Tongue, who made a memorable Test debut with a fifer against Ireland at Lord's. Cook replaces Matthew Potts as the third seamer in the side. This is the first time Stokes' side will be without the services of both Stuart Broad and James Anderson at home, following the latter's retirement last year. England playing XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Jamie Smith, Gus Atkinson, Sam Cook, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir. McCullum believes they will start as the favourites against the Chevrons but would need to make good decisions under pressure. The former Kiwi captain, along with Stokes, has been a major reason for the turnaround in Test fortunes for England. After their previous successful series against the Kiwis, England would hope to continue to ride on McCullum's approach for favourable results, ahead of a long Test season against India and Australia.
