MoCI hosts special celebration for World Intellectual Property Day
Doha
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) hosted a special ceremony yesterday at its Lusail headquarters to mark the World Intellectual Property Day, held this year under the theme of 'IP and music: Feel the beat of IP'. The event was graced by the presence of Ayedh Munahi Al-Qahtani, assistant undersecretary for Trade Affairs, alongside a distinguished assembly of artists, musicians, and representatives of intellectual property offices. The celebration is part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to promote meaningful dialogue on the significance of intellectual property, while advancing public awareness of its vital role in protecting creative expression and fostering innovation in all sectors.
In his keynote address, Abdulbaset Taleb Al-Ajji, director of the Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department at the Ministry, underscored that intellectual property has evolved beyond a purely legal construct to become a living expression of human creativity. 'Every artistic and musical work is a reflection of its creator's spirit, and deserves to be preserved from obscurity and protected from infringement.'
Al-Ajji highlighted the enduring value of musical and artistic heritage as a vital component of cultural memory and a pillar of national identity. He further noted its growing significance within the creative economy. He affirmed that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through its Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department, continues to advance legislative and educational initiatives to safeguard the rights of authors, artists and inventors, and sustain their innovations.
The event served as a platform for dialogue between the artistic and legal communities, aiming to raise public and professional awareness and foster partnerships between creators and policymakers to build an ecosystem that preserves the rights of creators and supports a thriving cultural environment.
During the celebration, a recorded address was delivered by Daren Tang, director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in which he reflected on the selection of music and IP into the theme of this year's event – emphasising the transformative power of music and intellectual property, and their capacity to enrich lives and shape a better world.
The event featured a presentation featuring Qatar's musical heritage, followed by two expert panel discussions. The first, titled 'Copyright and its Role in Modern Economy,' explored core legal principles, Qatar's regulatory framework, categories of protected works, exceptions, and the contribution of copyright to innovation and SME development.
The second panel brought together experts in intellectual property and professionals in the music and arts fields for a dynamic exchange of experiences. Discussions addressed the creative process, the influence of music on daily life, and the evolving challenges faced by artists in the digital age—particularly in the context of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence. The panel also discussed the Ministry's role in fostering a supportive legal and cultural framework for intellectual property in Qatar. The event concluded with a recognition ceremony honouring the participants of the discussion panels in appreciation of their contributions to the success of the event.

Family of Moncton casino manager give victim impact statements in manslaughter trial
The daughter of a casino manager who died two years ago after an assault by a customer told a Moncton courtroom Wednesday how her father's death has changed her life. "The joy has been stolen from my life," Krystel Frenette said, standing in front of several benches where her father's loved ones sat in Moncton's Court of King's Bench. "He was not just a victim or a case number, he was my dad. He was my mother's rock." Her statement was one of the eight victim impact statements that Justice Christa Bourque received during the sentencing hearing for Michael Glaspy of Riverview. Glaspy was found guilty in June of manslaughter in the death of Frenette in March 2023 after the two of them got into an altercation at the pub inside Casino New Brunswick in Moncton. It was the first time Frenette's family spoke in court in the more than two years since Glaspy was charged, Frenette, who was 56 when he died, was working as a food and beverage manager at the casino at the time. After being assaulted by Glaspy, he fell backward and hit his head on the floor. He died 24 days later in a Moncton hospital. Constance Frenette, Rodney's sister, said she still has "flashbacks" of her brother's stay in a Moncton hospital after the assault as he lost brain function. "For the first 13 days, he was in severe pain, rarely opened his eyes and spoke very little," she told the court. "I remain tormented by his suffering and loss of dignity." Frenette's wife of 35 years, Marie-France, cried in the front row as her sister-in-law's statement was read. "It is difficult to feel normal again and put all this behind you," Constance said. WATCH | Michael Glaspy sentencing to come in September: Krystel Frenette, addressing Glaspy directly in her statement, said he "robbed her" of a future with her father. Having recently gotten married, she said, she had to walk herself down the aisle, and her father won't be able to meet her future children. Glaspy also had the opportunity to speak in court. Through tears, he looked at the family on the other side of the court and said, "I'm sorry for all that is happened. I truly am, sorry." He then sat down in the prisoner's box, sobbing with his face in his hands. Crown seeking 3 to 5 years in prison Crown prosecutor Marc-André Desjardins sought a sentence of three to five years in a federal prison for Glaspy. Manslaughter, a homicide that is not intentional, carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, and there is no minimum. A conviction can fall on a spectrum from near-accident to near-murder. Desjardins told Bourque that Glaspy's offence "falls closer to the middle" of that spectrum. Defence lawyer Gilles Lemieux recommended two years minus one day, with time be served in the community — also known as a conditional sentence. Lemieux said Glaspy was remorseful, and "there are all kinds of possibilities of fashioning a sentence without the need for separating him from society." Bourque told the court she still needs time to think about her decision. "Manslaughter cases are the most difficult cases that a sentencing judge will have to decide," she said. "I'm not ready to give my decision now, this is a complicated case." She is expected to deliver the sentence on Sept. 8.

PSG beat Tottenham on penalties to win UEFA Super Cup
European champions Paris Saint-Germain began the new season by lifting more silverware on Wednesday as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup after producing a late comeback to draw the match 2-2. Spurs looked set to get their hands on the trophy in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank as they led 2-0 just after half-time at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy. Micky van de Ven gave last season's Europa League winners the lead on 39 minutes and Cristian Romero got their second goal three minutes into the second half. However, PSG were rescued by two substitutes as Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos headed in the equaliser four minutes into injury time. That meant a penalty shoot-out, but it started badly for PSG when Vitinha put their first kick wide. However, new Paris goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed the target, allowing Nuno Mendes to convert the winning penalty for PSG. Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro all scored from the spot for Spurs, in vain. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Lee converted for PSG before Mendes stepped up. It is the first time PSG, or indeed any French club, have lifted the Super Cup, as they take their tally of trophies won in 2025 to five. It is also the perfect start to the new campaign for Luis Enrique's team, who had a shortened off-season break having lost the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea exactly a month ago. They now begin the new Ligue 1 campaign on Sunday away to Nantes, while Spurs will turn their attentions to the start of the Premier League season as they take on Burnley at home on Saturday. as/nf
