Hampshire colitis patient hopes to make fitness history

BBC News29-05-2025

A colitis patient who was nearly killed when childhood bullies stamped on her stoma is taking on a fitness challenge in the hope of inspiring others.Lindsay Bowers, from Southampton, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis aged nine. The 41-year-old hopes to become the first person with a stoma to complete the Spartan DEKA FIT Europe, which involves eleven 500m runs, interspersed with exercise activities. She said: "People don't always see what you're dealing with but if I can show one person what's possible, then that's enough."
Ms Bowers first became unwell at age eight, and after experiencing severe stomach pain, diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, rectal bleeding and weight loss, was eventually diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. She was bullied at school for needing a stoma bag and suffered a life-threatening attack on a bus, which left her in intensive care with a damaged stoma, broken jaw and cracked ribs.Ms Bowers said: "My childhood bullies beat me up, stamped on my stoma so much that I nearly died."If they couldn't solve the surgery, it would have been murder at the end of the day – which is quite scary to think about."I'm proud to represent hidden disabilities."
'Officially a Barbie'
She became the first child in the UK to undergo J-pouch surgery – a pioneering procedure performed by a US specialist. It can reverse a stoma by connecting the newly created pouch, made from the small intestine to the anus, allowing waste to pass through the body naturally again. The procedure, which gave her 20 years without a stoma bag, was filmed and is used as a medical teaching tool. But in 2013 the J-pouch failed and she said she experienced a painful decade of ill-health.In 2022, Ms Bowers had life-changing surgeries that saw her undergo a full hysterectomy and a "Barbie butt" procedure removing her anus and colon."I'm officially a Barbie, so I'll take that," she said."It's closure for me. I wouldn't want to leave it open and then get scans five years down the line and find I've got cancer."
Ms Bowers said she now wanted to inspire other stoma patients."There's nothing positive in the hospital discharge literature that says life can be normal," she said."It takes time but you can feel happy and healthy again."Determined to show life with a stoma can be full and active, she began researching feats never attempted by someone with a stoma and discovered Spartan DEKA."A lot of my friends asked, 'Are you drunk? Are you sure you want to do this?'" she said. "But I was like, no – I'm doing it.""I wanted to be able to say to other people with stomas: you can do this and this is what healthy feels like," she added.

Rangers chief confident Russell Martin will win over supporters

After Kevin Thelwell was officially installed as sporting director on Monday, the 39-year-old former Southampton boss, who had a loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, was confirmed in the Ibrox hot seat on Friday morning. However, Martin's arrival has not been met with universal approval by Gers supporters. Stewart revealed Martin was the only person offered the job and believes the Ibrox club have taken a diligent approach to finding a successor to Philippe Clement, who left in February before former captain Barry Ferguson took over until the end of the season. 'Firstly, we're always very sensitive and aware of supporters' sentiment on any issue,' said Stewart. 'And, yeah, I'm aware that supporters have strong views on who the right person for the role is. 'So we'll always factor that in to a degree, but equally, I've been talking a lot about process and making sure we've got people and experts in that are qualified to make decisions. 'So we've really put our trust in our process, making sure we've got right people in to make decisions and with a lot of discipline. 'We're not oblivious to the noise at all, not at all. 'But I think, because we conducted such a thorough process to take us to this point where we've appointed Russell, we're confident the supporters will get behind him, particularly when they see him in action.' Stewart believes the appointment of former MK Dons and Swansea boss Martin, which followed last Friday's takeover by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, signalled a 'seismic' change at the Ibrox club. Stewart said: 'It clearly is incredibly significant. 'That's two seismic changes. In fact, three, if you look we've had a change of ownership, followed by our sporting director coming in, followed by a head coach being announced. 'That's an awful lot of activity for one club in one week. 'So I think it does herald a really positive new chapter for the club. 'It is a seismic period for the club and sets a really strong foundation for the future.' After a trophyless season for Rangers, Stewart outlined his expectations for Martin. He said: 'First and foremost about taking the current squad that we've got and making it better, then also adding to the squad over the summer. 'And it's about competing again. 'I think we all accept that last season just passed, we were way off, and that's not where we want to be. 'That's not acceptable as a club. So it's about competing again on all fronts and that is the expectation.'

'A forward to replace Kyogo' & centre-back 'a must'

We asked for your views on what Celtic must do in the transfer window this what some of you said:Declan: I think it's clear signings are needed after watching the past few Glasgow derbies and the Scottish Cup final. With that said I think our priority has to be keeping Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda, especially if we are to do similar or to even better our performances in Europe last Actually quite a few, 2025 has been sluggish. If Greg Taylor leaves then another left-back. Another centre-back as the manager clearly doesn't rate Maik Nawrocki, while Liam Scales and Auston Trusty don't convince either. Probably two wingers, Jota is out long term and another was needed anyway. Another midfielder, the cup final showed Reo Hatate's creativity when missing is a big loss, and another striker as Kyogo Furuhashi hasn't been We should get a right-back and new left-back and one new goalkeeper, one new midfield player and two new strikers Midfield never really showed consistency or convinced as a unit last season, not sure any combo really worked. So a true defensive midfielder with drive up the middle is really required, which would free up Callum McGregor to get forward. A forward to replace Kyogo, who should have never been allowed to leave without a replacement in the Celtic need to invest in a striker as Adam Idah isn't good enough. We also need a centre-back and a winger plus a new central midfielder because Paulo Bernardo and Arne Engels aren't good A centre-back is a must, since Carl Starfelt left we've had a few in alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers but none who look capable of really taking us to the next level. I'd like to see us really push the boat out to get a centre-back who is more around CCV's Celtic need a proper striker in the mould of recent stalwarts like Scott McDonald. I'm a big fan of Lawrence Shankland and think they should go for him. Goals, goals and more From back to front, a centre-back with top-level experience. A central midfielder that can take some of the burden off CalMac (it ain't Bernardo) and a forward that can use his head both figuratively and literally.

Man Utd prepare to make 'disciplined investment' to strengthen squad

Manchester United are prepared to make what they privately describe as "disciplined investment" in Ruben Amorim's squad to deliver demanded improvement next released their third quarter financial statement on included a £20m reduction in wages compared to the same point in 2024, part of which is due to a redundancy programme that will eventually see around 450 staff members losing their jobs. That contributed to a small operating profit of £700,000, compared to a loss of £66.2m 12 months was also a £2.7m "exceptional costs" payment, which the club say is related to the exits of some senior revenue for the nine months to 31 March is £502.3m, down just over 3%.Borrowings, excluding the amount owed in transfer fees, is £ reduction in costs is significant because, as minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously pledged, it creates space to invest in the first sources say the figures prove "difficult decisions" around staffing are now starting to bear fruit and that wage reduction, plus other savings, allow for "disciplined investment" in Amorim's squad. They say the club is committed to complying with the Premier League and Uefa's financial club, who have missed out on European qualification for only the second time since English clubs returned following the Uefa ban in 1990, have already agreed a deal to sign Wolves forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m. Negotiations with Brentford are also continuing over Cameroon forward Bryan their worst domestic performance since the 1973-74 relegation season, United chief executive Omar Berrada is demanding immediate improvement."We had a difficult season in the Premier League, which we all know fell below our standards," he said.
