Trump administration releases FBI files on Martin Luther King Jr despite family's objection

Indian Express6 days ago
US President Donald Trump's administration has released a trove of files of FBI surveillance linked to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., despite the opposition from his family and the civil rights group which the Nobel laureate led until his assassination in 1968.
After a court's order in 1977, the records gathered by the FBI which totaled to more than 240,000 pages were blocked from public viewing and were in turn kept in the National Archives and Records Administration.
King's family, including his two living children, Martin III and Bernice, were informed about the decision by the Trump administration to release the files and their own teams were reviewing the records. However, several members of the King's family opposed the release of documents.

A statement from the two children condemned 'any attempts to misuse these documents in ways intended to undermine our father's legacy,' BBC reported. The pair called their father's case a 'captivating public curiosity for decades.' But the two children stressed upon the personal nature of the matter and urged that 'these files must be viewed within their full historical context.'
King, a Baptist minister, was shot in Memphis on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39. A history sheeter James Earl Ray had confessed to killing King in a plea but later renounced his plea.
The statement released Martin III and Bernice further adds, 'As the children of Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, his tragic death has been an intensely personal grief, a devastating loss for his wife, children, and the granddaughter he never met, an absence our family has endured for over 57 years.'
The children wrote 'We ask those who engage with the release of these files to do so with empathy, restraint, and respect for our family's continuing grief.' Bernice was five years old and Martin III was 10 when his father Martin Luther King Jr. was killed.

Mamata launches Bhasha Andolan from Tagores land Bolpur

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Bolpur (WB), Jul 28 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched her much-publicised 'Bhasha Andolan' (Language Movement) from Bolpur in Birbhum district in protest against alleged attacks on Bengali-speaking migrants across the country. The TMC chief had earlier termed the alleged attacks as an attempt to erase Bengali identity from the national fabric. The protest march, rich in symbolism and emotion, commenced from the Tourist Lodge crossing and culminated at Jamboni bus stand, a three-kilometre stretch in the heart of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's land. Holding a portrait of Tagore in her hand, Banerjee led the procession, waving at crowds that lined both sides of the road. Party workers sang Pratul Mukhopadhyay's iconic protest anthem 'Ami Banglay Gaan Gai", while women in white-and-red saris blew conch shells, lending a distinctly Bengali cultural flavour to the rally. Wearing her trademark cotton sari and a traditional uttariya (scarf) of Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, Banerjee was flanked by senior TMC leaders and ministers as she led the march, the first in a series of such agitations planned across the state. Banerjee had last week appealed to TMC workers to prepare for a fresh agitation from July 28, calling it a second 'Language Movement', drawing parallels with the historic 1952 protest in Dhaka (then in East Pakistan) where students sacrificed their lives demanding recognition of Bengali as an official language of Pakistan. The United Nations later declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day to commemorate that struggle. The chief minister's rally came amidst a politically charged atmosphere in the state following reports of alleged harassment of Bengali migrants in states like Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, which have triggered widespread concern among families back home. "Can't Run Republic Like This": FBI Deputy's Cryptic Post Amid Epstein Row

Washington: Former conservative radio host and current Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Dan Bongino, posted a lengthy, cryptic message on his official X account, pledging to uncover "the truth" about the corruption and "political weaponisation" at federal law enforcement that "shocked" him down to his core. Bongino - known to dial up the drama around news and spread conspiracy theories as host of "The Dan Bongino Show" - proclaimed that "we cannot run a Republic like this." It was unclear what exactly the FBI Deputy Director was referring to in the post, but it comes on the heels of several controversies surrounding the federal probe agency, including investigations into the sexual abuse case against late financier Jeffrey Epstein and charges against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over her use of a personal e-mail server during the Obama administration. "During my tenure here as the Deputy Director of the FBI, I have repeatedly relayed to you that things are happening that might not be immediately visible, but they are happening," Bongino wrote on Saturday. Along with FBI director Kash Patel, Bongino said he is "committed to stamping out public corruption and the political weaponization of both law enforcement and intelligence operations." "It is a priority for us. But what I have learned in the course of our properly predicated and necessary investigations into these aforementioned matters, has shocked me down to my core. We cannot run a Republic like this. I'll never be the same after learning what I've learned," the former radio host said. He called the investigation "righteous and proper," and promised it would be done "by the book and in accordance with the law." "We are going to get the answers WE ALL DESERVE. As with any investigation, I cannot predict where it will land, but I can promise you an honest and dignified effort at truth. Not "my truth," or "your truth," but THE TRUTH. God bless America, and all those who defend Her. Respectfully, Dan," he added. Earlier this month, Bongino was at the centre of a row over the files related to disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. FBI's top two officials-- director Kash Patel and his deputy Dan Bongino-- both social media influencers and activists -- were among the Make America Great Again (MAGA) figures who pushed conspiracy theories around Epstein's death before Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. Bongino was reportedly frustrated with leaders at the Department of Justice (DOJ) over a joint, unsigned memo released with the FBI, which said that Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in prison while awaiting trial and that he did not keep a "client list." He also reportedly clashed with Attorney General Pam Bondi over the issue and was even considered to resign from his post before Trump told reporters he still has confidence in Bongino and that he was in "good shape."

Trump's Epstein headache: Frustrated but won't create ‘bigger spectacle by firing anyone,' report quotes aide

Despite applying numerous diversion tactics, the Epstein Files scandal continues to remain a persistent headache for US President Donald Trump, with reports suggesting that he is frustrated with his government's handling of the case read more As the Epstein scandal takes America by storm, reports are emerging that US President Donald Trump is increasingly frustrated with how his administration is handling the furore surrounding his ties with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Officials close to the matter told The Washington Post that the president is upset with how the scandal has overshadowed his agenda. However, two people familiar with the matter claimed that despite being upset with the team, Trump would not sack anyone, because a firing would act like fuel to the fire that Trump wants to die down. The president's exasperation follows weeks of missteps and no clear strategy among top officials who underestimated the outrage, especially from the president's base, and hoped the country would forget about the unreleased Epstein Files. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'This is a pretty substantial distraction,' one person close to the situation told The Washington Post. 'While many are trying to keep the unity, in many ways, the DOJ and the FBI are breaking at the seams. Many are wondering how sustainable this is going to be for all the parties involved — be it the FBI director or attorney general.' Trump is hesitant to say 'You're fired' Despite his frustration, officials said that Trump has been hesitant to make personnel changes. 'He does not want to create a bigger spectacle by firing anyone,' a person close to the president told the American news outlet. At the centre of the storm is US Attorney General . For months, the release of the Epstein Files was one of Bondi's signature agendas. However, during the July Fourth holiday weekend, Bondi, her top deputy and FBI leaders swiftly gave final approval to an unsigned memo about the Epstein files that ignited a whole new furore. The controversial memo argued that the Trump administration had found no evidence to dispute that Epstein died by suicide in jail in 2019 and said there was no 'client list' that would lead them to prosecute anyone else. Apart from this, the memo noted that no more documents would be released in the case in order to protect the privacy of the victims. The memo garnered backlash from both Democrats and Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) Movement supporters. Both sides started to demand more transparency while the White House struggled to respond. Since then, anonymous officials claim that Trump and Bondi have been discussing the matter 'almost every day'. 'They completely miscalculated the fever pitch to which they built this up,' Stephen A. Saltzburg, a former Justice Department official in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, told The Washington Post. 'Now, they seem to be in full-bore panic mode, trying to change the subject and flailing to make sense of what makes no sense," he added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The cracks within the Trump team White House soon went into a damage control mode with a steady series of announcements from the administration has failed to quiet the clamor, including the release of FBI records on the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, a newly launched investigation into former FBI director James B. Comey and an substantive treason accusation against former president Barack Obama over the 2016 presidential election. However, none of it seemed to sway the public's attention from the Epstein files. 'We had the Greatest Six Months of any President in the History of our Country, and all the Fake News wants to talk about is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax!' Trump vented on social media this month. Apart from this, cracks are propping up within the Trump administration. The Epstein scandal has left the DoJ and the FBI on opposing sides. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino even threatened to resign from his post. Not only this, Bondi accused Bongino of leaking information to the media around the handling of the Epstein files, three people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post. With disagreements within the team and the reports of Trump's name being mentioned in the files multiple times, the Epstein Files have become a recurring headache for the president.
