Trump administration releases FBI files on Martin Luther King Jr despite family's objection
After a court's order in 1977, the records gathered by the FBI which totaled to more than 240,000 pages were blocked from public viewing and were in turn kept in the National Archives and Records Administration.
King's family, including his two living children, Martin III and Bernice, were informed about the decision by the Trump administration to release the files and their own teams were reviewing the records. However, several members of the King's family opposed the release of documents.

A statement from the two children condemned 'any attempts to misuse these documents in ways intended to undermine our father's legacy,' BBC reported. The pair called their father's case a 'captivating public curiosity for decades.' But the two children stressed upon the personal nature of the matter and urged that 'these files must be viewed within their full historical context.'
King, a Baptist minister, was shot in Memphis on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39. A history sheeter James Earl Ray had confessed to killing King in a plea but later renounced his plea.
The statement released Martin III and Bernice further adds, 'As the children of Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, his tragic death has been an intensely personal grief, a devastating loss for his wife, children, and the granddaughter he never met, an absence our family has endured for over 57 years.'
The children wrote 'We ask those who engage with the release of these files to do so with empathy, restraint, and respect for our family's continuing grief.' Bernice was five years old and Martin III was 10 when his father Martin Luther King Jr. was killed.

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Bolpur (WB), Jul 28 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched her much-publicised 'Bhasha Andolan' (Language Movement) from Bolpur in Birbhum district in protest against alleged attacks on Bengali-speaking migrants across the country. The TMC chief had earlier termed the alleged attacks as an attempt to erase Bengali identity from the national fabric. The protest march, rich in symbolism and emotion, commenced from the Tourist Lodge crossing and culminated at Jamboni bus stand, a three-kilometre stretch in the heart of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's land. Holding a portrait of Tagore in her hand, Banerjee led the procession, waving at crowds that lined both sides of the road. Party workers sang Pratul Mukhopadhyay's iconic protest anthem 'Ami Banglay Gaan Gai", while women in white-and-red saris blew conch shells, lending a distinctly Bengali cultural flavour to the rally. Wearing her trademark cotton sari and a traditional uttariya (scarf) of Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, Banerjee was flanked by senior TMC leaders and ministers as she led the march, the first in a series of such agitations planned across the state. Banerjee had last week appealed to TMC workers to prepare for a fresh agitation from July 28, calling it a second 'Language Movement', drawing parallels with the historic 1952 protest in Dhaka (then in East Pakistan) where students sacrificed their lives demanding recognition of Bengali as an official language of Pakistan. The United Nations later declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day to commemorate that struggle. The chief minister's rally came amidst a politically charged atmosphere in the state following reports of alleged harassment of Bengali migrants in states like Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, which have triggered widespread concern among families back home. "Can't Run Republic Like This": FBI Deputy's Cryptic Post Amid Epstein Row
Washington: Former conservative radio host and current Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Dan Bongino, posted a lengthy, cryptic message on his official X account, pledging to uncover "the truth" about the corruption and "political weaponisation" at federal law enforcement that "shocked" him down to his core. Bongino - known to dial up the drama around news and spread conspiracy theories as host of "The Dan Bongino Show" - proclaimed that "we cannot run a Republic like this." It was unclear what exactly the FBI Deputy Director was referring to in the post, but it comes on the heels of several controversies surrounding the federal probe agency, including investigations into the sexual abuse case against late financier Jeffrey Epstein and charges against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over her use of a personal e-mail server during the Obama administration. Bongino was reportedly frustrated with leaders at the Department of Justice (DOJ) over a joint, unsigned memo released with the FBI, which said that Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in prison while awaiting trial and that he did not keep a "client list." He also reportedly clashed with Attorney General Pam Bondi over the issue and was even considered to resign from his post before Trump told reporters he still has confidence in Bongino and that he was in "good shape."
