Grant awarded to Atlanta Beltline for public Wi-Fi gone with federal program termination
Atlanta Beltline, Inc. President & CEO Clyde Higgs said a $9 million grant to help build public Wi-Fi on the Beltline Corridor is no longer available.
The funding was canceled along with the termination of the Digital Equity Competitive Grant Program, Higgs said in a statement.
Initially, the grant was intended to pay to provide public high-speed Wi-Fi on the Beltline and help improve public safety technology, enhance wayfinding and provide digital training and literacy programming, according to officials.
Now, the Beltline is searching for alternative funding sources, Higgs said.

Power tool company recalls chainsaws over fire hazard
(WHTM) — Ahead of Father's Day weekend, check to make sure the perfect power tool isn't on a recall list. The consumer product safety commission recalled more than 7,000 battery-powered chainsaws. The recall affects models sold from June 2018 to July 2024 with the following model numbers: 414170, 414181, 41418 and 414170R. Consumers can contact DR Power Equipment with proof of destruction for a pro-rated refund based on the product's age. Trump administration extends tariff pause on Chinese-made chips for 90 days
The Trump administration has extended a long-running exemption for Chinese-made chips from a 25 percent tariff imposed during President Trump's first administration. The office of U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a notice posted Saturday it was extending the exemption, set to expire that day, to Aug. 31. The 25 percent tariff, which initially went into effect in 2019, would have applied to a variety of products, including graphics processing units — the chips at the heart of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. The extension of the years-long tariff exemption comes as the second Trump administration weighs whether to impose separate import taxes on semiconductors. Trump has imposed wide-ranging tariffs in his second term, instituting hefty 'reciprocal' tariffs on dozens of countries, including China. However, he has put many of these import taxes on hold in the face of market concerns. Semiconductors were exempted from these tariffs, although the president has said he plans to impose separate sector-specific tariffs. The White House announced in April it opened a national security investigation into the effects of importing semiconductors, the first step toward instituting tariffs under a provision known as Section 232. Semiconductor tariffs, like other import taxes on tech products, pose difficulties for companies given tech firms' heavy reliance on international supply chains. Nvidia, a leading chipmaker, has begun producing some of its advanced chips at a factory in Arizona and plans to spend $500 billion expanding its AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next four years. Atlanta rent prices down 1% compared to 2024, but rose month-to-month
The median rent prices across the United States are starting to trend lower, and the same is true for Atlanta. While the dollar amounts differ, Atlanta and the United States writ large both had year-over-year rental price decreases of 1%. Similarly, both the country overall and the city saw rent prices creep upward by 0.5% in May, according to real estate firm Redfin. According to Redfin's latest report, the median rent in Atlanta is $1,549, lower than the U.S. average of $1,633. Redfin reported that, nationally, 'the rental vacancy rate for buildings with five or more units was 8.2% in the first quarter" of 2025. The company said rent prices are also less volatile than during the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Apartment construction in America has been hovering near a 50-year high, and even though renter demand is strong, it's not keeping pace with supply,' Redfin Senior Economist Sheharyar Bokhari said.
