Character.AI introduces TalkingMachines, a new AI model that can generate interactive videos

Indian Express15 hours ago
Character.AI, the popular platform that allows users to create and interact with AI chatbots has introduced a new diffusion model called TalkingMachines. The Google-owned startup says its newest AI model enables 'real-time, audio-driven, FaceTime-style video generation.'
In a blog post, Character.AI said that users said the new model can help generate an interactive, real-time video of characters with different styles, genres and identities using just an image and a voice signal.
Character.AI's new feature is powered by a Diffusion Transformer (DiT), which utilises a technique called asymmetric knowledge distillation that enables the conversion of a 'high-quality, bidirectional video model into a blazing-fast, real-time generator.' The company says its new model listens to audio and then animates parts of the character like mouth, head and eyes, all in sync with every word, pause and intonation without compromising on things like consistency, image quality, style and expressiveness.
For audio, Character.AI is using a custom-built 1.2B parameter audio module that captures both speech and silence, with the company claiming that it can achieve 'infinite-length generation with no quality degradation over time.' The company goes on to say that its new AI model supports a variety of styles, like photorealistic humans to anime to 3D avatars and builds on the core infrastructure for role-playing, storytelling and interactive world-building.
Character.AI has been constantly adding new features like a new image-to-video generator called AvatarFX, Scenes and Streams. Following OpenAI's advanced voice mode, the startup even added a call feature that allows users to engage in voice conversations with the character of their choice to increase engagement.
Last year, the Google-owned startup was sued by the mother of a 14-year-old kid in Florida who claimed that a Character.AI chatbot encouraged her son to kill himself. Since then, the company has introduced new supervision tools to ensure the online safety of users under 18.

Advanced Transport Mgmt System to start on 3 h'ways

Pune: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will soon introduce the Advanced Transport Management System (ATMS) on three national highways that connect to the city, senior officials told TOI on Friday. These three routes include the Pune-Solapur Highway, Pune-Nashik Highway, and Pune-Satara Highway. The ATMS is a set of technologies and software used to improve efficiency, safety, and reliability of transport networks. It integrates various systems like traffic sensors, cameras, and communication for real-time traffic information. "A proposal pertaining to this has been sent to the Union ministry of road transport and highways, and we expect approval soon. With this system being introduced, we aim to check for different traffic violations and the exact causes of congestion on these highways," a senior NHAI official in Pune told TOI. You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune According to officials, high-end CCTV cameras, which can rotate 360 degrees, will be installed at a distance of every 1km along all these highways. "These cameras will have a range of 500m on all sides. In addition, modern cameras will be placed every 500m at gantries of the road. These AI-enabled cameras will be able to spot any violations and read the registration number of the vehicles involved, following which an e-challan will be generated automatically without any manual intervention," the official added. While the Pune-Nashik Highway is approximately 213km long, Pune-Satara Highway is around 141km long; the Pune-Solapur Highway is 246km in length. Another NHAI official said the new system is similar to the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC).

Engineers must now think like CEOs, OpenAI's Srinivas Narayanan at IIT-M alumni event

. BENGALURU: In the age of artificial intelligence, software engineers must evolve into decision-makers with CEO-like vision, said OpenAI's VP of Engineering Srinivas Narayanan, speaking at the IIT Madras Alumni Association's Sangam 2025 conference on Saturday. 'The job is shifting from just writing code to asking the right questions and defining the 'what' and 'why' of a problem. AI can already handle much of the 'how,'' Narayanan said, urging developers to focus on purpose and ambition over executional detail. Joining him on stage, Microsoft's Chief Product Officer Aparna Chennapragada warned that simply retrofitting AI onto legacy tools won't be enough. 'AI isn't a feature you can just add on. We need to start building with an AI-first mindset,' she said, pointing to how natural language interfaces are replacing traditional UX layers. The panel, moderated by IITMAA President and Unimity CEO Shyamala Rajaram, explored AI's impact on jobs, product design, safety, and education. Chennapragada said the future belongs to those who combine deep expertise with generalist flexibility. 'Prompt sets are the new PRDs,' she quipped, referring to how product teams now work closely with models to prototype faster and smarter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Itanhaém (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo Narayanan shared that OpenAI's models are already being used in medical diagnostics, citing a case where a reasoning model identified rare genetic disorders at a Berkeley-linked research lab. 'The potential of AI as a collaborator, even in research, is enormous,' he said. On risks, Narayanan acknowledged challenges such as misinformation, unsafe outputs, and misuse. He noted that OpenAI recently rolled back a model for exhibiting 'psychopathic' traits during testing, highlighting the company's iterative deployment philosophy. Both speakers stressed accessibility and scale. While Chennapragada called for broader 'CS + AI' fluency, Narayanan said model costs have dropped 100-fold over two years. 'We want to democratise intelligence,' he said. Chennapragada closed with a thought: 'In a world where intelligence is no longer the gatekeeper, the real differentiators will be ambition and agency.'
