Why does Florida have so many motorcycle accidents? This is the most dangerous intersection

Yahoo21-02-2025

Florida is one of the most popular states for motorcycle riders and even hosts one of the biggest annual bike rallies in the U.S., in Daytona Beach.
And while the Sunshine State's year-round warm weather and coastal roads can make it a biker's paradise, it is also one of the most dangerous places in the U.S. to ride a motorcycle.
According to a recent national study from Georgia-based personal injury law firm Jones and Swanson, Florida actually led the country for the most motorcycle accident-related deaths in 2024 – for the third year in a row.
Here are the most dangerous states for riding motorcycles, where the most dangerous intersection for motorcyclists is in Florida and why the state tops the list.
To find the most dangerous states for motorcycle drivers, Jones and Swanson collected motorcycle fatality data from the The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), compared helmet laws and DUI enforcement and penalties in each state and identified high-risk intersections using Florida DOT crash reports.
'For the third consecutive year, Florida ranks number one in motorcycle deaths, far surpassing other states,' the study says.
'Weak helmet laws, high DUI-related crashes, and unchanged high-risk intersections continue to endanger riders. With 1,024 DUI-related motorcycle crashes in 2024, Florida remains one of the weakest states for DUI enforcement, putting not only motorcyclists but all road users at risk.'
According to the study and NHTSA data, Florida saw 550 motorcycle-related deaths from January through September 2024 – this is down from 560 in 2023, but still 40 more than the next most-dangerous state on the list.
Here are the five most dangerous states for motorcycle drivers, based on data from 2024:
Florida
California
Texas
Arizona
Georgia
'While overall traffic deaths in the U.S. declined, Florida's motorcycle fatalities remain disproportionately high, proving that policy failures, weak safety enforcement, and neglected crash hotspots are putting lives in danger,' the study says.
Why is car insurance so expensive? Insurance expert weighs in on high rates in Florida
This study, which uses data only through September 2024, attributes the disproportionately high rate of motorcycle-related deaths in Florida to loose helmet laws and a need for stricter DUI penalties in the state.
'As Florida continues to host major motorcycle events like Daytona Bike Week and Biketoberfest, the risks for riders are greater than ever,' the study says.
'Without immediate legislative reforms, including stronger helmet laws, stricter DUI penalties, and infrastructure improvements at known deadly intersections, 2024 could become another record-breaking year for motorcycle deaths in Florida.'
According to the study, Florida's most dangerous intersection for motorcyclists lies right outside of Fort Myers, at the intersection of State Road 82 and Daniels Parkway.
And the Fort Myers News-Press reports that authorities are cracking down on traffic violations and addressing dangerous driving along S.R. 82 this week, with an increased Florida Highway Patrol presence on the roadway on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
'Florida Highway Patrol officers took reign of State Road 82 on Wednesday night, cracking down on dangerous driving practices with a wave of traffic stops, citations and arrests after growing complaints about safety,' the News-Press reported.
'The 'Slow your Ride 82' operation was intended to send a proactive message to traffic law breaking motorists, according to the troopers.'
The News-Press report said that Between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Wednesday, several specialized FHP units were active along S.R. 82, with an ELITE DUI Squad, Aggressive Driving Unit, Contraband Interdiction Unit with K9 and a drug recognition expert.
Here are the results of the traffic stops on Wednesday, according to the News-Press report:
Four drug arrests, Seven felonies
One stolen vehicle — a 2024 GMC Sierra
Four unlicensed drivers
29 speeding citations
19 other citations — faulty equipment, seatbelts, expired tag, no insurance
54 warnings
Four vehicles towed

You are allowed to ride a motorcycle in Florida without a helmet, but you have to be at least 21 years old and have an insurance policy that covers at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred while operating or riding on a motorcycle, according to the state statutes.
'A person may not operate or ride upon a motorcycle unless the person is properly wearing protective headgear securely fastened upon his or her head which complies with Federal Motorcycle Vehicle Safety Standard 218 promulgated by the United States Department of Transportation,' the state statute says.
'A person over 21 years of age may operate or ride upon a motorcycle without wearing protective headgear securely fastened upon his or her head if such person is covered by an insurance policy providing for at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of a crash while operating or riding on a motorcycle.'
Yes. If you're riding a motorcycle without a helmet in Florida and are under 21 or don't have the proper insurance coverage, you can be ticketed.
But don't worry about being swept away to jail, if you do break this law. A ticket for not wearing a helmet while on a motorcycle is a noncriminal traffic infraction, similar to speeding violations, which means you'll be fined and may have to attend a driving class.
'A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation,' the state statute says.

California-based EV company Lucid Group LCID inked a U.S.-sourced graphite deal to power its EV batteries and strengthen its domestic supply chain. U.S. EV behemoth Tesla TSLA saw its sales slipping in China last month amid fierce competition and price war. NIO incurred a loss per share of 45 cents in the first quarter of 2025, which was wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 22 cents. The Chinese EV maker reported a loss of 36 cents in the year-ago quarter. It delivered 42,094 vehicles in the first quarter, up 40.1% year over year, including 27,313 vehicles from NIO and 14,781 from ONVO. Revenues generated from vehicle sales amounted to $1.37 billion, up 18% year over second-quarter 2025, NIO projects deliveries in the range of 72,000-75,000 vehicles, implying a rise of 25.5-30.7% year over year. Revenues are estimated between $2,689 million and $2,765 million. NIO currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here. Lucid signed a multi-year supply agreement with Graphite One to secure U.S.-sourced natural graphite, reinforcing its commitment to building a localized, resilient supply chain for EV materials. The agreement, with production expected to begin in 2028 from the Graphite Creek deposit in Alaska, follows Lucid's earlier deal with Graphite One for synthetic graphite and adds to a growing list of domestic partnerships aimed at powering future Lucid vehicles with American-made battery materials. These moves align with Lucid's strategy to reduce its carbon footprint, increase supply chain independence, and support U.S. manufacturing. In addition to Graphite One, Syrah Resources will begin supplying natural graphite in 2026 from its vertically integrated facility in Louisiana. Graphite, a key component of lithium-ion batteries, plays a crucial role in enabling fast charging. With these agreements, Lucid is bolstering its position as a U.S.-based EV innovator focused on long-term sustainability and supply security. Tesla's sales of China-made EVs continued to decline for the eighth consecutive month in May due to intensifying price wars in the world's largest auto market. Per the China Passenger Car Association data, combined domestic and export deliveries to Europe and other markets of the Model 3 and Model Y dropped 15% year over year in May to 61,662 units, following a drop of 6% in April. Amid backlash, Tesla remained resilient in Texas

Even as Tesla deliveries plunged nationally this year amid Elon Musk's very visible (if short-lived) alliance with President Trump, there was at least one state where Tesla registrations were up: Texas. Why it matters: The registration data, obtained by Axios through public information requests, indicates loyalty to the brand in its home base, including Texas' large urban and suburban counties. The depth of conservatives' enthusiasm for Musk's automobiles now faces a major test amid the absolute meltdown last week between the Tesla CEO and the president. By the numbers: Texans registered 12,918 new Teslas in the first three months of 2025, a period when Musk, who contributed more than $250 million to a pro-Trump super PAC during the 2024 election campaign, was enmeshed in the Trump administration as the overseer of DOGE, the president's cost-cutting initiative. Over the same period in 2024, Texans registered 10,679 Teslas. That's a 21% increase year over year. The intrigue: The spike in Texas registrations came as Tesla was flailing elsewhere. Tesla's vehicle deliveries plunged 13% globally in the first quarter of 2025 (336,681 electric vehicles) compared with Q1 2024 (386,810). Tesla vehicles were torched at showrooms and the brand's reputation cratered. Zoom in: Tesla saw year-over-year improvements in its sales in some of the most populous Texas counties. In Travis County, new Tesla registrations grew from 1,369 in the first quarter of 2024 to 1,424 during the first quarter of 2025. In Harris County, they grew from 1,526 to 1,837 during the same period. Tesla registration grew from 1,316 to 1,546 in Collin County and from 990 to 1,146 in Dallas County. In Bexar County, registrations grew from 631 to 664. What they're saying:"It's homegrown pride," is how Matt Holm, president and founder of the Tesla Owners Club of Austin, explains the car company's resilience to Axios. "And regardless of all the drama going on these days, people can differentiate between the product and everything else going on, and it's just a great product." "Elon has absolutely and irreversibly blown up bridges to some potential customers," says Alexander Edwards, president of California-based research firm Strategic Vision, which has long surveyed the motivations of car buyers. "People who bought Teslas for environmental friendliness, that's pretty much gone," Edwards tells Axios. Yes, but: The company had been enjoying an increasingly positive reputation among more conservative consumers. Musk was viewed favorably by 80% of Texas Republicans polled by the Texas Politics Project in April — and unfavorably by 83% of Democrats. In what now feels like a political lifetime ago, Trump himself even promoted Teslas by promising to buy one in support of Musk earlier this year. "In some pockets, like Austin, you have that tech group that loves what Tesla has to offer, can do some mental gymnastics about Musk, and looks at Rivian and says that's not what I want or might be priced out," Edwards says. Between the lines:"Being in the state of Texas, you're naturally conditioned to think you're better than everyone else in the U.S. And when you buy a Tesla" — a status symbol — "that's what you're saying. It doesn't surprise me that there's an increase in sales" in Texas, Edwards says. Plus: Tesla's resilience in Texas could have practical reasons as well, Edwards says. Texas homes — as opposed to, say, apartments in cities on the East Coast — are more likely to have a garage to charge a car in, he adds. What's next: Musk said late last month that Tesla was experiencing a "major rebound in demand" — without providing specifics. But that was before things went absolutely haywire with Trump and Tesla stock took a bath last week.
