The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) is facing more than $2.1 million in outstanding rent payments from subsidized tenants, with arrears increasing by $200,000 since 2023.
'There's no question in my mind that inflation has played a big part of this, and it's highly difficult for families to keep up with the inflationary costs that are ongoing,' said board chair Mark King, speaking with CTV News on Friday.

He is attributing the rise to inflationary pressures, noting that even below-market rents are becoming unaffordable for those on fixed incomes.
'People, especially those in geared-to-income housing, are under pressure because of the inflationary process we've gone through in the last year or year-and-a-half. This has placed huge pressure on people being able to pay for their normal living costs,' King said during Wednesday's board meeting.
The Nipissing District Housing Authority oversees 896 subsidized and affordable units. King acknowledged that while a collection process will be pursued, the board's auditor, Dean Decaire of BDO Canada, warned that some older debts may need to be written off.

The exact amount to be written off remains undetermined as of this publication.
Tracy Bethune, the authority's tenant services manager, said staff are grappling with more 'complex tenancies,' as tenants increasingly enter subsidized housing without adequate supports. During the meeting, she cited staff turnover, delays for hearings with the Landlord and Tenant Board, and non-payment as contributing factors to the growing arrears.

CDN Maverick Expands Strategic Holdings Along Interpreted Greenstone Belt Extensions

Vancouver, British Columbia--(Newsfile Corp. - August 20, 2025) - CDN Maverick Capital Corp. (CSE: CDN) (OTCQB: AXVEF) (FSE: 338B) ("Maverick" or the "Company") is pleased to announce the expansion of its land packages in James Bay, Quebec with the addition of 170 new mineral claims, comprising 98 claims at Chabinoche and 72 at Poncheville, totaling 9,222 hectares (Figure 1). Including the Nottaway claims, Maverick has now secured over 14,782 hectares (~147.8 km²) through staking. These claims are primarily located along interpreted southern extensions of the Frotet-Evans Greenstone Belt ("FEGB"), a prolific Archean terrane that hosts major deposits such as Troilus (Au-Cu), Moblan (Li), and Q2 Metals' recent Cisco LCT pegmatite discovery. To view an enhanced version of this graphic, please visit: Simon Studer, Interim CEO of Maverick states: " Maverick identified a clear opportunity to secure ground with outstanding geological context that has not yet received the systematic work it deserves. The timing was perfect to bring these targets under our control and to continue to advance our generative business plan in the James Bay area systematically. This expansion gives us exposure to multiple commodities and discovery opportunities with solid geological foundations." Situated between Two Prolific Districts Maverick's Chabinoche and Poncheville claims occupy a strategic position south of the Frotet-Evans Greenstone Belt ("FEGB") and north of the Matagami VMS camp. Within a 30 km radius, the properties are neighboured by the Lac Rocher Ni-Cu-PGE deposit, the Montviel REE-Nb deposit, and Q2 Metals' Cisco lithium discovery (Figure 2). While the central FEGB has been systematically explored for decades, the adjoining belts to the south remain largely untested by modern exploration. This places Maverick between two of the James Bay region's most productive exploration and mining districts, providing exposure to multiple deposit models and discovery opportunities. Nottaway: Historical and Strategic Context Historic SOQUEM drilling at the Nottaway occurrence intersected Zn-Pb-Ag-Au mineralization spatially associated with sheared pillow lavas within the Nottaway Shear (see Company news release dated June 24, 2025). In 2014, Effigis, on behalf of SOQUEM, reinterpreted geological and geophysical datasets and identified multiple additional volcano-sedimentary panels in the area. CDN Maverick has now compiled these historic interpretations (Figure 2). While some extents may be exaggerated, the presence of mafic volcanics, amphibolites, and mafic intrusions within its land package supports the interpretation of prospective volcanic-sedimentary belts. Follow-up prospecting by SOQUEM in 2017-2018 identified new volcano-sedimentary outcrops inside Maverick's current tenure, further reinforcing the potential for underexplored greenstone-derived settings. Building on this foundation, Maverick's latest staking provides exposure to multiple mineral systems across three key domains: Chabinoche (West): Consolidated ground along the interpreted greenstone belt extension adjacent to the Nottaway Structural Corridor. Chabinoche (NE): Extended toward the contact between the Poncheville intrusive suite and greenstone stratigraphy, within 200 m of the Lac Rocher trend. Poncheville (South): Acquired control of most of the Zaza geophysical anomaly, a prominent potassium-enriched magnetic feature with no previous drilling. Figure 2: Past interpretations by SOQUEM and Effigis reveal potential greenstone belts-unmapped in regional government surveys-now captured within the new property boundaries. To view an enhanced version of this graphic, please visit: Advancing Towards Drill-Ready Targets Maverick is compiling and integrating historical and government datasets into a NI 43-101 framework, including the reprocessing of geophysical and geochemical data and the refinement of geological models. This work marks the transition from AI-assisted prospectivity analysis completed earlier this year to clear target definition, establishing the foundation for systematic field evaluation at Nottaway and, as warranted, across other parts of the Chabinoche and Poncheville claim groups. Special constable who welcomed officers to Sachs Harbour receives RCMP headstone

Social Sharing A former special constable who helped police settle into Sachs Harbour, N.W.T., was honoured this week with an RCMP headstone for his work. The late Peter Esau, who died in 2017, served in Sachs Harbour in the 1950s. He was recognized Tuesday in a ceremony in Inuvik. Esau was one of the special constables who helped RCMP officers adapt to their postings, often showing them how to trap and live off the land. Aleta Esau, one of his daughters, said her dad was from Aklavik and he himself needed to adapt to a new way of life in Sachs Harbour. "One of the things I remember him saying was he had to learn from the locals on how to trap and live in a different environment. From the trees to the tundra, he had to learn a different style of trapping," Aleta said, adding the lack of wood to make fires was another challenge he had to overcome. She said she wants people to remember her father as a man of the land. "He was a big part of the Muskox harvest, and he was always proud of being a trapper and the skills he learned on the land," Aleta said. "He really enjoyed what he was doing." Retired officers Eric LaFoy and Bob Knight, who both worked with Esau, made the trip north to be at the ceremony The recognition didn't feel real for Aleta until she got phone calls from the retired officers, she said. "When they called me, that's when it became something to look forward to," she said. "It's so nice to see our family come out for this. I got a lot of phone calls [from] people who wished to be here for this." Aleta said LaFoy and Knight left a mark on their family too — Knight is the godfather of Aleta's older sister. Not all special constables get headstones, but the two veteran officers who worked with Esau made sure he did. LaFoy was in Sachs Harbour from 1982 to 1984. He spent 22 years in N.W.T. He said the visit back to the North was one to remember. "Those were probably the best two years of my life on the force," LaFoy said. "It's so wonderful to be here today. I haven't seen some of them since they were little kids." LaFoy said the relationship between the special constables who were locals and the RCMP officers who were new to the North was crucial for their success. "Special constables at that time were our life link. We come up here, we are new to the country and to the people, we didn't speak the language or know the customs," said LaFoy. "Without them, we would not have survived, quite honestly." A ceremony was held at the Inuvik cemetery Tuesday followed by a reception at the RCMP mess hall. LaFoy said it's important to remember the special constables who served the detachments. "This feels great," he said.
