Ange Postecoglou sacked: Who are Tottenham Hotspur's top candidates to replace the Australian?
With Ange Postecoglou unable to save his job as Tottenham Hotspur manager despite helping the club win the UEFA Europa League, its first major trophy in 17 years, we take a look at some of the top candidates likely to replace the Australian. read more Tottenham Hotspur finished 17th, just above the drop zone, in Ange Postecoglou's second season in charge, which was the primary reason behind the Australian losing his job. AP Helping Tottenham Hotspur win their first major trophy in 17 years wasn't enough for Ange Postecoglou to save his job as manager, with the on Friday. The bombshell of an announcement came just half a month after Postecoglou's men defeated Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao to win the UEFA Europa League, adding a trophy to their cabinet for the first time since Juande Ramos' side won the League Cup. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Tottenham however, had finished 17th in the 2024-25 Premier League season, just above the relegation zone, after 22 defeats in 38 games, which had already cast a shadow on his future at the north London club. More from Football The was an aberration in what was ultimately a disastrous season for a team that had finished runners-up at the UEFA Champions League just six years ago. And for a club that was seen as a regular in the Premier League top six, fighting relegation certainly is embarrassing. In the end, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided not to take a leaf out of Manchester United's book and give Postecoglou another shot the way the 'Red Devils' extended Erik Ten Hag's job last year, and made his exit official. So who are the candidates likely to replace 'Big Ange' at Spurs? We take a look at some of the names currently doing the rounds: According to BBC Sport, Brentford boss Thomas Frank is a favourite to succeed Postecoglou as Spurs manager in the following season. The 51-year-old has been in charge of 'The Bees' since 2018 and has not only steered them into the Premier League from the Championship, he helped them finish 10th this season – seven places above Tottenham and five above United. Brentford boss Thomas Frank is a leading candidate to succeed Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham Hotspur manager. Reuters Also in contention is Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, whose team finished level on 56 points with Brentford but finished ahead at the ninth spot due to a superior Goal Difference. Iraola's heroics in Spain – helping second-tier clubs Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano into the semi-finals of Copa del Rey and steering the latter into LaLiga – further helps boost his chances of landing the job at Tottenham. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Also in contention are Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner. While Silva's Fulham finished just two points short of Bournemouth and Brentford, Glasner helped Crystal Palace pull off their biggest victory ever – a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the League Cup final that helped them win the first trophy of its 120-year history and condemned Pep Guardiola to a trophyless season. Is Pochettino set for a Spurs comeback? Mauricio Pochettino managed the cub for five years from 2014 to 2019, helping the club make their only appearance in a Champions League final during this period besides finishing among the top three in three consecutive seasons (2015-2018). And though he did not win a trophy with the club during his time in charge, Pochettino certainly ranks among the greatest gaffers in Spurs' history. Pochettino has had one-year spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea since he was sacked by Spurs just six months after the Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool 0-2, and currently manages the United States men's football team. And when asked about the possibility for a second spell at his old club on Saturday, a day after Postecoglou's firing, the Argentine chose to play down the talk. Tottenham Hotspur had finished among the top-three in three consecutive seasons and made their only appearance in a UEFA Champions League final during Mauricio Pochettino's five-year spell in charge of the north London club. Reuters 'After I left in 2019, every time that I was free, and the place of the position of the manager or head coach in Tottenham Hotspur (was vacant), my name is appearing on the list. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'If you have seen the rumors, I think there are 100 coaches in the list. I think, don't be worried about that,' Pochettino said during a press conference after USA's 2-1 home defeat against Turkey in a friendly. Pochettino added that a move back to Tottenham is 'not realistic', but did not rule out the possibility with absolute certainty. 'If something happened, you for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it's not real. It's not realistic. And look at where I am, where we are. 'And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we're talking about it because it's my club, like Newells or Espanyol,' he added.

Harry Kane saves England from embarrassment against Andorra in World Cup qualifying
England needed a second-half goal from Harry Kane to secure a 1-0 win over lowly Andorra and maintain a perfect record under Thomas Tuchel after three World Cup qualifiers. England was held scoreless by a team ranked 173rd in the world until Kane redirected a pass from Noni Madueke into the top of the net in the 50th minute after the Bayern Munich striker's initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Iker Álvarez. 'We need to be better for sure,' Kane said. 'It's not one that many will remember, and we had good spells, but we take the three points and move on.' It was goal No. 72 in his 106th appearance for the Three Lions. Tuchel's side remained top of Europe's Group K with nine points after wins against Albania and Latvia. They have yet to concede a goal under the German coach. Nevertheless, Tuchel said that he was 'not happy' with the slim win over tiny Andorra, which has a population of around 80,000. 'At the end of it, it was absolutely not OK because we lost focus and we lost the urgency that is needed,' he said. Andorra remained winless but managed to frustrate England's stars for most of the game with its five-man defensive line. Ezri Konsa had to block a late shot by Andorra's Guillaume Lopez to prevent the chance of an equalizer. 'We kept giving it away and that gave them a bit of confidence and energy,' Kane said. "At 1-0 with five to 10 minutes to go you have to be careful.' England dominated possession and Eberechi Eze went close to a second goal when he forced Álvarez to tip his header of the bar as the visitors couldn't extend the lead. England had won its previous six meetings with Andorra by a combined score of 25-0. 'In terms of effort, I think I couldn't be prouder of my team and how they carried it out,' Andorra coach Koldo Álvarez said. The game was played at Espanyol's stadium in Barcelona, nearly three hours south of the Pyrenees principality due to concerns that work on Andorra's home stadium wouldn't be finished in time. Only the group winners qualify directly for next year's tournament in North America. The second-placed teams go into a playoffs. Europe will have 16 teams in the expanded 48-team field for the World Cup. The group stage of European qualifying runs through November. England will next host Senegal in a friendly on Tuesday. Albania and Serbia draw under tight securityAlbania and Serbia drew 0-0 in the latest chapter of a charged rivalry rooted in deep historical and ethnic tensions between the Balkan neighbors. Serbia goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic saved a penalty kick by Rey Manaj in the best chance of the game, which was played without Serbian fans as determined by UEFA for security concerns. Albania is second in Group K behind England with four points after three games. There were few chances in the match played under tight security, with more than 2,000 police officers guarding the capital. Albanian fans loudly whistled when the Serbian anthem was played and shouted Kosovo, which predominantly has an ethnic Albanian population and which was part of Serbia until 1999 when a NATO air campaign pushed Serb forces and authorities out. Some fans tossed beer cups at the Serbian players, despite repeated calls for them to stop. A 2014 game between the teams in Belgrade was abandoned when a drone carrying an Albanian flag sparked a full-scale brawl. The last time they met on Albanian soil was in 2015. Veteran Dzeko scores for BosniaA goal from 39-year-old Edin Dzeko gave Bosnia and Herzegovina a 1-0 win over San Marino. The Balkan republic leads Group H with three wins, while San Marino is bottom with zero points. Austria beat Romania 2-1 in the same group as Michael Gregoritsch and Marcel Sabitzer scored for the hosts before Denis Alibec halved the difference in injury time. Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries provided the scoring for the Netherlands in a 2-0 win at Finland to start their qualifying campaign in Group G. Lithuania was held 0-0 at Malta also in Group G. Pochettino back to Tottenham? Former Spurs boss reveals whether he will return or not
USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino has played down rumours linking him with the vacant managerial position at his former club Tottenham Hotspur, following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou on Friday. Argentine Pochettino was in charge of Spurs for five years from 2014 and took the team to the UEFA Champions League final but never won a trophy with the North London club. Despite having signed a two year contract in September to lead the USA at the 2026 World Cup, which it tis co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino's name has appeared in bookmakers' lists of favourites for the Spurs job and in several UK reports. But asked on Saturday about the links, in his post-match press conference following the USA's 2-1 home friendly defeat to Turkey, Pochettino played down the talk. 'After I left in 2019, every time that I was free, and the place of the position of the manager or head coach in Tottenham Hotspur (was vacant), my name is appearing on the list,' Pochettino said. 'If you have seen the rumours, I think there are 100 coaches in the list. I think, don't be worried about that,' he added. Pochettino has talked in the past about his remaining affection for Spurs and has never ruled out the possibility of returning to the club at some point. But he suggested the timing was not right for a second chance with his old team. 'If something happened, you for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it's not real. It's not realistic. And look at where I am, where we are,' he said in the stadium press room in Hartford, Connecticut. 'And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we're talking about it because it's my club, like Newells or Espanyol,' he added. Postecoglou was fired just 16 days after the Australian ended Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. The former Celtic boss paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. The USA has now lost three games in a row, following losses to Panama and Canada in March's CONCACAF Nations League but Pochettino was upbeat about his team's encouraging display after question marks about the attitude of his team in recent games. 'This attitude I want to continue for the future until we arrive to the World Cup ... that is the only way we can improve,' he said. 'If I decide in September (to have a) different roster, what I want is the same level of commitment, attitude, not to complain (about) this and that,' he added.
