Helping Tottenham Hotspur win their first major trophy in 17 years wasn't enough for Ange Postecoglou to save his job as manager, with the on Friday. The bombshell of an announcement came just half a month after Postecoglou's men defeated Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao to win the UEFA Europa League, adding a trophy to their cabinet for the first time since Juande Ramos' side won the League Cup.

Tottenham however, had finished 17th in the 2024-25 Premier League season, just above the relegation zone, after 22 defeats in 38 games, which had already cast a shadow on his future at the north London club.

The was an aberration in what was ultimately a disastrous season for a team that had finished runners-up at the UEFA Champions League just six years ago. And for a club that was seen as a regular in the Premier League top six, fighting relegation certainly is embarrassing.
In the end, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided not to take a leaf out of Manchester United's book and give Postecoglou another shot the way the 'Red Devils' extended Erik Ten Hag's job last year, and made his exit official.
So who are the candidates likely to replace 'Big Ange' at Spurs? We take a look at some of the names currently doing the rounds:
According to BBC Sport, Brentford boss Thomas Frank is a favourite to succeed Postecoglou as Spurs manager in the following season. The 51-year-old has been in charge of 'The Bees' since 2018 and has not only steered them into the Premier League from the Championship, he helped them finish 10th this season – seven places above Tottenham and five above United.

Also in contention is Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, whose team finished level on 56 points with Brentford but finished ahead at the ninth spot due to a superior Goal Difference. Iraola's heroics in Spain – helping second-tier clubs Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano into the semi-finals of Copa del Rey and steering the latter into LaLiga – further helps boost his chances of landing the job at Tottenham.

Also in contention are Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner. While Silva's Fulham finished just two points short of Bournemouth and Brentford, Glasner helped Crystal Palace pull off their biggest victory ever – a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the League Cup final that helped them win the first trophy of its 120-year history and condemned Pep Guardiola to a trophyless season.
Is Pochettino set for a Spurs comeback?
Mauricio Pochettino managed the cub for five years from 2014 to 2019, helping the club make their only appearance in a Champions League final during this period besides finishing among the top three in three consecutive seasons (2015-2018). And though he did not win a trophy with the club during his time in charge, Pochettino certainly ranks among the greatest gaffers in Spurs' history.
Pochettino has had one-year spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea since he was sacked by Spurs just six months after the Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool 0-2, and currently manages the United States men's football team.
And when asked about the possibility for a second spell at his old club on Saturday, a day after Postecoglou's firing, the Argentine chose to play down the talk.

'After I left in 2019, every time that I was free, and the place of the position of the manager or head coach in Tottenham Hotspur (was vacant), my name is appearing on the list.

'If you have seen the rumors, I think there are 100 coaches in the list. I think, don't be worried about that,' Pochettino said during a press conference after USA's 2-1 home defeat against Turkey in a friendly.
Pochettino added that a move back to Tottenham is 'not realistic', but did not rule out the possibility with absolute certainty.
'If something happened, you for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it's not real. It's not realistic. And look at where I am, where we are.
'And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we're talking about it because it's my club, like Newells or Espanyol,' he added.

Mauricio Pochettino Denies Tottenham Hotspur Return: 'Not Realistic'

Last Updated: Mauricio Pochettino dismissed rumours linking him to the Tottenham Hotspur managerial job, emphasising his commitment to USA for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed rumours linking him with the vacant managerial position at his former club, Tottenham Hotspur, following Ange Postecoglou's dismissal on Friday. The Argentinian managed Spurs for five years, starting in 2014, leading the team to a Champions League final but failing to secure a trophy with the North London club. Despite signing a two-year contract in September to lead the USA at the 2026 World Cup, which they are co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino's name has appeared on bookmakers' lists of favourites for the Spurs job and in several UK reports. When asked about the links in his post-match press conference after the USA's 2-1 home friendly defeat to Turkey, Pochettino downplayed the rumours. 'Since I left in 2019, whenever the managerial position at Tottenham Hotspur is vacant, my name appears on the list," Pochettino said. 'If you've seen the rumours, there are about 100 coaches on the list. There's no need to worry about that," he added. Pochettino has previously expressed his affection for Spurs and has not ruled out a return to the club at some point. However, he suggested that the timing was not right for a reunion with his former team. 'If something happens, you'll see, but we can't discuss this now because it's not realistic. Look at where I am and where we are," he said at the stadium press room in Hartford, Connecticut. The former Celtic boss paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since their relegation from the top flight in 1976-77. The USA has now lost three games in a row, following defeats to Panama and Canada in March's CONCACAF Nations League, but Pochettino remained positive about his team's performance. 'I want to continue this attitude into the future until we reach the World Cup … that's the only way we can improve," he said. 'If I decide to have a different roster in September, I want the same level of commitment and attitude, without complaints," he added. First Published: June 08, 2025, 15:16 IST

He's shown an ability to lead a team, not just on the field, but off the field. And that is a huge part of captaining an international team. Your ability to bring everything together at the right time. His partnership with Andrew McDonald, the coach, has been super for Australian cricket," Finch said while speaking to Star Sports. Cummins has proven himself as a leader on the field, taking 73 wickets in 17 Tests at an average of over 24. His record as Test captain stands at 20 wins, seven losses, and six draws in 33 matches, achieving a win percentage of 60.60. Major League Cricket: Liam Plunkett on how cricket can boom in the USA "I think both teams are very similarly matched with their bowling attacks. You look at Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, they are probably the four front runners at this stage, along with Nathan Lyon. And then you have got , Lungi Nigidi, Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj. So I think they both match up so closely together, but I would give Australia just the edge, having probably played more test cricket as a bowling group in the English conditions," Finch added. South Africa's squad includes Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma as captain, David Bedingham, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Keshav Maharaj, and Senuran Muthusamy. WTC Final: Steve Smith opens up on his future, keeps India tour plans under wraps

Steve Smith (Photo by) Australian cricket star Steve Smith has indicated he is taking his Test career "day by day" and avoiding thoughts about potential tours to England and India in 2027. The 36-year-old veteran's immediate focus remains on the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's starting June 11, following his impressive form of four centuries in his last five Tests against India and Sri Lanka. Smith recently retired from ODI cricket in March after accumulating 5,800 runs in 170 appearances, including 12 centuries and two World Cup victories. His last ODI appearance featured a 73-run knock against India in the Champions Trophy semifinal. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! While Smith hasn't played T20 internationals since February 2024 and hasn't participated in the IPL since 2021, he maintains his interest in the shorter format. He plans to play two Major League Cricket matches for Washington Freedom between the WTC final and Australia's first Test against West Indies in late June. "I am definitely not looking that far ahead," Smith said regarding the 2027 tours. "I am kind of taking it day by day. While I am enjoying it, while I am batting nicely and feeling like I am contributing to the team, I am pretty happy. But that [2027] is a while away." Major League Cricket: Liam Plunkett on how cricket can boom in the USA Speaking about Lord's Cricket Ground, Smith expressed his deep appreciation for the venue.
