Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens proposes new admission fees
Woman burned in Aliamanu New Year's blast released
The public hearing is scheduled for 5 p.m. on June 3 at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, located at 1055 Kinoʻole St. in Hilo.
The county had initially introduced the fee proposals last year but hit pause following community feedback. The original plan was shelved in December 2024 after a public hearing in November. Since then, officials say they've made several changes aimed at making the fees more resident-friendly.
Under the revised proposal, Hawaii Island keiki (children under 18) and kūpuna (seniors 60 and over) would receive free admission to the zoo, while adult residents would pay $4. Non-resident adults would pay $12, and non-resident children ages 3–17 would pay $5. Admission would remain free for children under 3. An annual pass would also be available for $25 per person.

'One of my first actions as mayor was to suspend the previous zoo admission fee proposal because it needed to be fairer for residents,' said Mayor Kimo Alameda in a statement. 'After several months of review, we believe this new proposal will keep the zoo affordable for families and people of all ages, from keiki to kūpuna, while ensuring that non-resident guests also contribute.'
He added that revenue from the new fees could help fund future improvements at the zoo, including new exhibits and educational programs.
Located in a lush rainforest, the Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens is home to nearly 300 animals representing 82 species. It's the only tropical rainforest zoo in the U.S. and features playgrounds, picnic pavilions, a petting zoo, a gift shop, and more.
The county is also proposing a new phased-in fee schedule for the Panaʻewa Equestrian Center, which offers facilities for horse racing, rodeo events, dressage, and public riding. The center operates daily and includes a racetrack, arenas, wash racks, and rental stalls with paddocks.

School plans to convert former pub into classrooms
An empty Grantham pub could be turned into a sixth-form centre by a nearby school. The King's School has applied to convert the former Five Bells on Brook Street for use by its Year 12 and 13 students. In its planning application, the boys' school said the revamped space would provide "teaching and study spaces specifically tailored to the needs of older students preparing for A-level examinations and university entrance". It would also be used for offices. Plans include removing the bar area, the cellars and the kitchen and converting them into smaller rooms. The application said "no significant external alterations are proposed" except possibly ramps and door widening to improve accessibility. The bid will be considered by South Kesteven District Council. The King's School's former pupils include Sir Isaac Newton and 18th Century Poet Laureate Colley Cibber. Hanging by a hoof: Goat trapped on Big Island cliff for days
HAWI, Hawaii (KHON2) — On July 10, the Kohala Animal Relocation and Education Service told KHON2 that skilled rock climber volunteers encouraged the goat to move onto a lower, slightly larger cliff. KARES said it's a good sign the goat is moving down on her own. To actually get to the ground, she'll have to wait until low tide. The goat has been confirmed by KARES to be feral, not a pet. They said she was in good health and plan to check on July 11 to see if they can get her safely off the cliff. How do illegal animals make their way to Hawaiʻi — and what happens when they're found? Locals in Hawi first spotted a goat on a cliffside three days ago and feared it was growing weak. 'Time is running out, you know, on this poor animal, and it looks like it must have fallen to that spot,' said Debbie Cravatta, founder and president of KARES. She said locals have been keeping an eye on it everyday. Cravatta said the goat may be a pet that appears to have fallen about 300 feet from the top of the cliff at Hawi. It's about another 100 feet to the ground. Concerned residents contacted federal, state and county agencies, but didn't get a response. The terrain in the area is treacherous and steep. Without much more they can do from the ground, they're looking for help from someone with a helicopter — and heart.'Because once they get to it, and if they have to carry it up or down it, it's better if we could get that goat in a bucket and away, because if it is scared, just even, like if it was a cat or dog, if you make the wrong move, it may plunge to its death in fear,' Cravatta said. While some might shrug off the effort to save a single goat, animal advocates say it's a matter of empathy, the kind of compassion that makes Hawaii special. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news 'We share the Earth with lots of creatures. Who decides who lives and who dies? Who's, you know, indigenous of the islands, and who's, you know, out there to be killed, because it's an invasive species. Aren't we all invasive species to one degree? So we're going to save the ones we can the ones that cross our path,' Cravatta said. The Kohala Animal Relocation and Education Service said if it's a pet, they'll try to find its home. If it's feral, they plan to give it medical care and release it back to the wild. Anyone who may be able to help with rescuing the goat, is asked to call the Kohala Animal Relocation and Education Service at (808) 333-6299. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
