QuickCheck: Did Man Utd's legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy score his first-ever goal for the club in Malaysia?
AS one of biggest and most successful football clubs in history, Manchester United has a massive global fan base. However, not every fan has had the opportunity to watch their favourite team play a game live in person.
That's the reason why the friendly matches the team plays in between seasons are a genuine treat for loyal fans – which is especially true in Malaysia.
That said, is it true that the club's legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scored his first-ever goal in club colours right here in Malaysia?
Verdict:
TRUE
Yes, van Nistelrooy – whom some may say is the most clinical striker to play for the club – made his Manchester United debut at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in a pre-season friendly against a Malaysian selection back in June 2001.
The Dutch striker opened his scoring account for the Red Devils with a brace – the first in the 7th minute when he put the ball past the goalkeeper after a clever little back-heeled pass from Dwight Yorke.
His second goal – and the third for the match – came in the 36th minute when club captain Roy Keane put him through with only the keeper to beat, and he showed his class with a neat little chip to put the ball into the net.
The game was a real treat for the club's fans in Malaysia. It was also where Argentinian playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron made his debut and featured a strong line-up with legends such as Ryan Giggs, David Beckham (who scored the second goal), Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the starting 11.
Manchester United won the match with a final 6-0 score.
Van Nistelrooy went on to score 150 goals in 219 appearances for Manchester United. Although his two goals – this being a friendly match – did not count towards his final goal tally, Malaysian fans will always have the fond memory of witnessing the start of his legendary stint with the club.

Soccer-Fernandes rejects Al-Hilal offer to stay at Manchester United
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Europa League - Final - Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United - San Mames, Bilbao, Spain - May 21, 2025 Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes REUTERS/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo (Reuters) -Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned down the opportunity to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in order to keep playing "at the highest level", he said on Tuesday. The Portuguese midfielder admitted that he had considered the move, which media reports said was worth four times his current salary, after being contacted by Al-Hilal's president. "There was that possibility, the president of Al-Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it," Fernandes, who is preparing to face Germany with Portugal, told reporters on Tuesday. "It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future." Fernandes ultimately decided to stay at United and said he was motivated by his desire to continue playing at the top level and encouraged by his family and the club's coach Ruben Amorim. "I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so," Fernandes added. "I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. "I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. "It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision." The 30-year-old Fernandes scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season, winning the club's Player of the Year award for the fourth time. However, it was a season to forget for the team, as they finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest league finish in half a century, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. The 26-year-old will replace Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who joined Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen on a three-year deal. Kelleher's contract also includes an option for a 12-month extension, with British media valuing the deal at around 18 million pounds ($24.35 million). "I am very pleased to welcome Caoimhin to Brentford. We have scouted him in the past and were aware that he had a year to go on his contract with Liverpool this summer," Brentford's Director of Football Phil Giles said. Kelleher, who has earned 22 caps for Ireland, has made 67 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions. In his 10-year career with Liverpool, he won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two Carabao Cups and the UEFA Super Cup. Soccer-Netherlands 'obligated' to top World Cup qualifying group, says Koeman
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Nations League - Quarter Final - Second Leg - Spain v Netherlands - Estadio de Mestalla, Valencia, Spain - March 23, 2025 Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman before the match REUTERS/Pablo Morano/File photo (Reuters) - The Netherlands are obligated to win their World Cup qualifying group, coach Ronald Koeman said on Tuesday as they began preparation for their opening Group G clash against Finland in Helsinki on Saturday. It will be their first match in their bid to qualify for next year's finals in North America, followed by a second fixture on Tuesday when they host Malta in Groningen. The Dutch belatedly kick off their qualifiers because they played in the Nations League quarter-finals in March where they drew twice with Spain before being eliminated on penalties. "Maybe it is easier to play football against Spain," Koeman told a press conference. "Because no one expects anything from us then. "Finland and Malta are different types of opponents. We will have more of the ball, and they try to stop us. "We are obligated to finish first in this group, but we do not underestimate anyone and we need to bring the energy that we have shown in our last few matches." The group also includes Lithuania and Poland, who top the standings after two wins in March. The winners qualify for the World Cup while the runners-up advances to a playoff competition. "We want to be good for all the matches and perform much more consistently," Koeman said. "We have shown that against one of the best countries in the world, which gives us confidence." One problem Koeman admitted, however, was the lack of a recognised centre forward. "We don't have top strikers now. I don't know what is coming through the ranks with the 15-16-year-olds, but it is clear that at the moment we do not have the classic striker of the past. Players like (Patrick) Kluivert, (Klaas-Jan) Huntelaar, and (Ruud) Van Nistelrooy. You don't see players like them around anymore." Koeman is not sure who would lead the line in the qualifiers over the next week. "It will probably be Memphis (Depay) or Wout (Weghorst) at the top of the attack," he said. "But (Cody) Gakpo and (Donyell) Malen are all possibilities in that position." (Writing by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; Editing by Ed Osmond)
