‘Poonch's geographical location makes it vulnerable to Pakistan shelling'

Hindustan Times10-05-2025

A day after surviving intense Pakistan shelling, 68-year-old Pradeep Khanna, a retired education department official, says it is the geographical location of Poonch, close to the Line of Control (LoC) that makes it vulnerable to Pakistan shelling.
Khanna is uniquely placed to delve into the details of Poonch, having lives through two India-Pakistan wars (1965 and 1971) while being in this town.
He adds the situation worsened further after the Tashkent Agreement of 1966, when India gave away the Hajipir Pass to Pakistan.
The district across 1,674 sqkm has a population of nearly five lakh.
'Poonch city alone has over one lakh population and has Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs in almost equal proportion. However, Muslims remain a majority in the district,' says Khanna.
In 1965 war, India had captured Hajipir Pass, Hazira, Bagh and other areas, which were later given back to Pakistan under Tashkent Agreement.
'Poonch is actually a bowl shaped valley and Pakistan sits on dominating positions adjoining Ajote, Digwar, Digwar Terwal, Digwar Maldlyal, Malti, Gulpur and Guntrian areas. Betar Nullah (rivulet) divides us here. Chirikot post of Pakistan is just atop Poonch town. In Mandi, Pakistan has Kopra post on a dominating position. Similarly, in Jhallas, Pakistan sits on a higher ground,' says Khanna. 'They are visible to us and we are to them but they are on higher ground and we cant harm them,' he adds.
Former GOC of the Srinagar-based15 Corps, also called Chinar Corps, Lt Gen KJS Dhillon said Poonch, south of Pir Panjal range, has an important strategic and historical value.
'Poonch sits at the mouth of Hajipir Pass from Jammu region, i.e., western side and the other end is Uri from Kashmir side. Since Poonch is strategically located, there is a very strong presence of Indian military,' he says.
The former general says, 'Pakistan tries retaliate but can't hit Indian army because then it will be initiation of war. Therefore, it has been hitting innocent civilians and their properties. It is as good as they killed innocent civilians in Pahalgam and now killing innocent civilians on LoC.'
He admitted that there were certain areas in Poonch where Pakistan has dominating positions along the LoC.
'We also have lot of dominating heights on the LoC where if we start hitting their civilians, it will hurt them badly. But we are an ethical army and never fire on civilians. Pakistan knows that since Indian Army is not going to retaliate by firing on their civilians, they are targeting our civilians and trying to incite us to hit their civilians or military installations, which we have not done during Operation Sindoor,' he says.
Being strategically located, Poonch district has four brigades—Poonch, BG, KG and a RR-- to check any aggression by Pakistan.
According to Lieutenant General (retired) Rakesh Sharma, who served five stints in Jammu and Kashmir, Poonch town's proximity to the LoC makes it vulnerable to cross-border shelling and artillery fire.
He also pointed out the strategic importance the Hajipir Pass, a mountain route currently located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) could have served at this time, had to not been handed over to Pakistan by erstwhile government, terming the move a 'blunder'.
The Hajipir Pass connects Uri with Poonch, south of Pir Panjal range. India gave the pass to Pakistan following Tashkent Declaration in January 1966. India had captured it during the 1965 India-Pakistan war.

Multi-party delegation meets Jaishankar after 4-nation tour on Operation Sindoor

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday met members of a multi-party delegation and received feedback from them on how they exposed Pakistan in various countries over its support to terrorism. The delegation led by BJP leader Baijayant Panda met Jaishankar at his office here after the key diplomatic tour and presented their report. The delegation returned home Tuesday morning after visiting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Algeria. In these countries, the delegation members met foreign dignitaries and Indian diaspora during a series of meetings and exposed Pakistan's support to terrorism in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor. "It was a very good meeting, and we gave External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar our feedback. All members of the delegation provided their inputs and shared their views with him," said delegation member Harsh V Shringla, a former foreign secretary. Asked what the minister told them, he said, "He (Jaishankar) told us that our objectives were fulfilled and congratulated the delegation and its leader". Panda told reporters that their visit abroad was successful where they could explain India's "new normal" against Pakistan over terrorism. He said the delegation members were united and gave a very strong message to the countries they travelled. "A successful four-nation tour — Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Algeria. All four countries have taken clear steps against terrorism and understand India's principled stand...," he said in a post on X. Panda said the countries they visited understand India and its history has been such that "we don't need to give any justification". "We are a country of non-violence and have provided shelter to people from several countries. We had wanted to give the message of India and the new normal that we will retaliate terrorist violence. We ave also imposed economic sanctions and our goal is that Pakistan should stop its policy of supporting terrorism," he told reporters. Panda also said that the countries they visited are supporting India, not just in economic growth but also against terrorism. Other delegation members who met the external affairs minister included former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma and Satnam Singh Sandhu. Other members of the eight-member delegation included Nishikant Dubey and Asaduddin Owaisi.

When Lata Mangeshkar REFUSED to sing for Raj Kapoor's films after demanding royalty: I will sit outside your house till…'

The collaboration between Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Kapoor, though legendary, faced turbulence during 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' when Kapoor replaced Mangeshkar's brother as composer without her consent. This led to a rift, with Mangeshkar demanding royalties and avoiding Kapoor. Eventually, through mediation and Kapoor's persistence, they reconciled, allowing Mangeshkar to continue singing for his films. The legendary collaboration between Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Kapoor gave Bollywood some of its most timeless melodies, but behind the scenes, their relationship was marked by moments of tension and disagreement. One such episode during the making of Satyam Shivam Sundaram revealed the complex dynamics between the iconic singer and the visionary filmmaker—an episode that nearly ended their partnership but ultimately showcased their resilience and mutual respect. Tensions rose during Satyam Shivam Sundaram when Raj Kapoor asked Lata to bring her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar on board for the music. She agreed, but was later shocked to learn that he had been replaced by Laxmikant-Pyarelal—without her knowledge. This incident led Lata to refuse to sing for Raj for a period, and their relationship was further strained by disagreements over royalties. Despite the ups and downs, their creative partnership left an indelible mark on Indian film music. In Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman, Raj Kapoor's daughter Ritu Nanda detailed a pivotal moment that strained the filmmaker's long-standing collaboration with Lata Mangeshkar. At Raj's request, Lata persuaded her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar—who was initially reluctant—to compose the music for Satyam Shivam Sundaram, a suggestion originally made by singer Mukesh. However, while Lata was away on a US tour, Raj Kapoor quietly replaced Hridaynath with composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal without informing her. The unexpected move caused a serious rift between Lata and Raj, marking a low point in their otherwise iconic association. Lata Mangeshkar found the situation deeply embarrassing, especially since her brother Hridaynath had accepted the film project on her recommendation, only to face negative press that suggested otherwise. Hridaynath felt offended and humiliated by the turn of events. On returning from her tour, Lata confronted Raj Kapoor, questioning why he had replaced her brother after she had convinced him to take on the project at Raj's own request. According to Ritu Nanda, Raj Kapoor's daughter and author of Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman, this incident became a major point of conflict between Lata and Raj. Following the fallout, Lata began demanding royalties from Raj for the songs she recorded, as she did with other producers, and reportedly caused delays in recording sessions, making their professional relationship increasingly strained. To ease the tension between Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Kapoor, Pandit Narendra Sharma, a fatherly figure to Lata, stepped in and persuaded her to lend her voice to Satyam Shivam Sundaram, believing no other singer could do justice to the songs. However, Lata set strict conditions: she agreed to sing only if she could avoid interacting with anyone in the studio. She went as far as requesting Laxmikant Pyarelal to prevent Raj Kapoor from entering the studio during her recording sessions. Lata sang the song and left immediately without speaking to anyone. Around that time, the film Bobby was in production, and she contacted Raj Kapoor to inform him that the singers' association had instructed singers to collect royalties directly from producers. Raj's response was sharp: "I have come here to do business, not distribute royalty." Lata, unfazed, replied, "You have come here for business, and I have come to the zoo," recalling the exchange with a mix of humor and frustration. Tensions reached a boiling point, prompting Raj Kapoor to ask Laxmikant Pyarelal to mediate the ongoing cold war between him and Lata. Though she initially resisted his efforts, Lata eventually received a call from Raj Kapoor, who playfully warned her, 'If you refuse to sing for my film, I will put up a tent right outside your house.' The two eventually reconciled, with Lata going on to sing for Bobby and all the other films Raj Kapoor made throughout his career. Reflecting on the re-release, veteran actress Rekha said, 'Umrao Jaan is not just a film I acted in — she lives within me, breathes through me, even now. At the time, none of us could have imagined the timelessness of the film, the way it would gently etch itself into the soul of Indian cinema. To see it return to the big screen is like watching an old love letter being opened by a new generation. My heart is full.' The Director of cult classic, Muzaffar Ali, also spoke about its re-release. He shared, 'Umrao Jaan was not just a film—it was a journey into the soul of a lost culture, a forgotten tehzeeb. Through her pain, poetry, and grace, we tried to resurrect the elegance of an era where love and longing spoke in verse. I had actors who brought a lot of heft to their characters, and then there was Rekha, who lived Umrao Jaan and truly immortalised it. I am thrilled that the film is back on the big screen for a whole new generation to discover a time and culture that's very much a part of our being.' Bankrolled by SK Jain & Sons and Integrated Films, Umrao Jaan is scheduled to be re-release on 27th June.
