Proteas fall short despite Maphaka, Rickelton heroics in opening T20I against Australia

Photo: AFP Image: AFP The Proteas began their T20 International and ODI series against Australia with a 17-run defeat in the first T20I at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Sunday, despite the best efforts of young speedster Kwena Maphaka and wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton. South Africa had been set a competitive target of 179 after skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to field first. The hosts signalled their attacking intent from the outset, with Mitch Marsh dispatching a Lungi Ngidi outswinger for six off the first ball. George Linde dropped Travis Head in Kagiso Rabada's opening over, but the batter fell next ball, cutting to Maphaka in the gully for two. When Marsh skied one in Rabada's second over, Maphaka held on in the covers to make it 30/3. Australia continued to play aggressively. Ngidi's slower ball accounted for Cameron Green, who went for 35 off 13, caught by Rickelton. At 4/71 after the Powerplay, the Proteas had the upper hand. Maphaka bowled Mitchell Owen for two before Linde took a sharp diving catch in the covers to dismiss Glenn Maxwell for one off Muthusamy. The spinner's first two overs went for just two runs, helping peg back the scoring. 🚨 Change of Innings 🚨 Brilliant bowling from our Proteas Men sees Australia restricted to 178 all out in 20 overs! 🔥🏏 Now it's over to our batters to chase it down and kick off the series in style! 🇿🇦💪#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) August 10, 2025 Tim David, however, kept the scoreboard ticking, reaching his half-century off 30 balls (five sixes). His stand with Ben Dwarshuis frustrated South Africa, until Maphaka returned to have Dwarshuis caught by Markram for 17. At 7/136 after 15 overs, the Proteas were still in the hunt, but David punished a Tristan Stubbs drop by launching consecutive sixes off Muthusamy. Stubbs later redeemed himself, catching David for 83 off Maphaka's bowling, before Adam Zampa lofted another Maphaka delivery to Dewald Brevis. The youngster's figures of 4/20 were the best in the innings as Australia closed on 178. Markram and Rickelton began the chase brightly, with the captain driving Josh Hazlewood through the covers and over midwicket for boundaries. But Markram fell for 12, and Lhuan-dré Pretorius (14) followed soon after. Brevis made just two as South Africa slipped to 3/48 after six overs. Into the final phase of play in Darwin! ⏳ Rickelton is keeping the chase alive as the Proteas men reach 120/5 after 15 overs. 💪🔥 59 runs are needed from 30 balls with all to play for in this opening T20I! 🏏🇿🇦#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) August 10, 2025

Proteas defeated by Australia in T20 series opener

Chasing 179 runs to win, the SA team were restricted to 161/9. Though they put up a fight, South Africa were outplayed by Australia on Sunday, falling in a 17-run defeat in the first game of a three-match T20 International series in Darwin. Set a target of 179 runs to win, the Proteas struggled to build partnerships, and while opening batter Ryan Rickelton tried to hold the innings together, he did not receive sufficient support. Rickelton contributed 70 runs off 55 balls, hitting his second T20 International half-century before he was removed in the final over of the innings, and the Proteas were restricted to 161/9 in their 20 overs. Seamer Ben Dwarshuis (3/26) and Josh Hazlewood (3/27) were the best of Australia's bowlers, leading their attack. Australia innings Earlier, after being sent in to bat, Australia got off to a fast start, but they paid for their aggression with the loss of some early wickets, and they were teetering on the edge of a collapse at 71/4 at the end of the six-over powerplay. However, Tim David did well to carry the lower order, contributing 83 runs off 52 balls as Australia reached 178 in their 20 overs. Taking their 10th wicket from the last ball of the innings, the Proteas bowled out Australia in a T20 International for the first time. Fast bowler Kwena Maphaka kept the pressure on the hosts in the second half of the innings, with the 19-year-old left-arm quick taking 4/20, returning career best figures in his ninth T20 International. The rest of the Proteas attack combined well, with five of their six bowlers taking wickets, albeit in a losing cause. The second T20 match between SA and Australia will be played in Darwin on Tuesday.
