Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and former CM Mehbooba Mufti engaged in a war of words over Tulbul Navigation project on the Wular Lake in north Kashmir. The CM accused Mufti of trying to "please people across the border" while Mufti said Abdullah's assertions were "dangerously provocative".It all started on Thursday when Abdullah shared an aerial footage of Wular Lake, stating: "Now that the IWT has been 'temporarily suspended', I wonder if we will be able to resume the project.""It will give us the advantage of allowing us to use the Jhelum for navigation. It will also improve the power generation of downstream power projects, especially in winter," said Abdullah. The Tulbul Navigation Project, popularly known as the Wular Barrage Project , was initiated in the 1980s, but work was suspended due to Pakistan's objection. The work restarted in 2010, with the then NC-Congress government, also led by Abdullah, said Article 9 of IWT permitted projects meant for non-consumptive use. In 2012, unidentified militants lobbed a grenade towards a bund of the barrage and even thrashed some of the workers at the project site.In response to Abdullah's comments, Mufti wrote that J&K CM's comments amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan are deeply unfortunate and dangerously provocative. She said people deserve peace as much as anyone else in the country. "Weaponising something as essential and life-giving as water is not only inhumane but also risks internationalising what should remain a bilateral matter," said Mufti. To this Abdullah retorted, saying it's unfortunate that Mufti's "blind lust to try to score cheap publicity points and please some people sitting across the border" makes her to refuse to acknowledge that IWT has been one of the biggest "historic betrayals" of the interests of the people of J&K. Mufti then claimed that NC founder Sheikh Abdullah abandoned the struggle for plebiscite in 1975, when he was made the chief minister of J&K.The J&K CM in response said that taking cheap shots at a person Mufti herself has called Kashmir's tallest leader is the best the PDP leader could do. Abdullah also shared some media reports in which Mufti has said that IWT was against the interest of people of J&K.Mufti said that Abdullah invoking IWT now is a reckless ploy to derail the ceasefire.

Rahul's allegation of Maha poll rigging triggers BJP, EC retorts

The Congress's rivals lashed out on Saturday against the opposition leader Rahul Gandhi for alleging systematic rigging of the November 2024 Maharashtra elections, a claim also rebuffed by Election Commission officials who called it misinformation. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha published an op-ed on Saturday, claiming the Maharashtra polls were a 'blueprint for rigging democracy' and alleging 'industrial-scale rigging involving the capture of our national institutions'. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde dismissed Gandhi's claims as baseless, pointing out the inconsistency in the Congress leader's position. 'In the Lok Sabha elections, when Maha Vikas Aghadi won the elections in Maharashtra, they did not say anything. At that time, the EVMs and ECI were right,' Shinde told reporters in Thane. BJP chief JP Nadda accused Gandhi of manufacturing 'fake narratives' out of desperation following election defeats, saying the Congress leader was 'cooking up bizarre conspiracies' and 'defaming institutions with zero proof'. Gandhi outlined what he termed a five-step rigging process: rigging the panel for appointing the EC, adding fake voters to electoral rolls, inflating voter turnout, targeting bogus voting where the BJP needed wins, and hiding evidence. Election Commission officials, who did not want to be named, reiterated their stance of following laid-down procedures as per law, dismissing allegations of voter percentage spikes and substantial jumps in elector numbers. One of these officials emphasised that electoral roll preparation for the assembly elections occurred under the oversight of over 100,000 booth level agents appointed by political parties, including 27,099 from the Congress itself. 'Instead of writing to the EC directly, it is very strange that Rahul Gandhi keeps approaching the media seeking answers to his doubts again and again,' said this top-level official. 'After losing the match, blaming the referee has become the standard practice.' EC did not respond to requests for a comment. The official cited above added: 'If there was an issue with the elector numbers, why were hardly any appeals preferred with the DM and the CEO under the Representation of the People Act, 1950?'. The person cited above provided comparative data to counter Gandhi's allegations, noting that Maharashtra's 8.14 per cent elector growth between 2019 and 2024 was actually lower than other states. Jharkhand recorded a 13.40 per cent jump, Telangana saw a 16.16 per cent increase, and West Bengal had an 11.36 per cent rise during comparable periods. On allegations of inflated turnout figures, the EC official explained that voter turnout data on the VTR App would logically increase after 5 PM due to logistical challenges. 'Polling teams come from varying distances and face different logistical challenges, such as late-hour voting trends, difficult geographical and weather conditions, communication issues, and tough terrain,' this person said Following the off-record responses by EC officials, Gandhi took to X at 6:56 PM on Saturday and wrote on the issue again: 'Dear EC, You are a Constitutional body. Releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions,' Gandhi posted, demanding the publication of consolidated, digital voter rolls and release of post-5 PM CCTV footage from Maharashtra polling booths. 'Evasion won't protect your credibility. Telling the truth will,' he added. With agency inputs

BJP team to visit Dakshina Kannada to assess recent communal incidents

Mangaluru: A BJP delegation will visit Dakshina Kannada on Monday to gather information on murders of Suhas Shetty, Abdul Rahiman, and a series of killings reported in the past. The aim is to understand the backgrounds and find reasons for these incidents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As a responsible party, the BJP team, led by BJP state president BY Vijayendra, opposition leader R Ashoka, and others, is visiting the district to find solutions and restore peace in the region, said BJP MLC CT Ravi. He said on Saturday that govt should find the roots of all clashes. "There is a need for peace in the district, and Congress leaders have put forth the same demand. Meanwhile, police is also taking measures in this direction. As far as I know, illegal cow transportation, cow slaughter, love jihad, and religious conversion are the reasons for all communal hatred. Hence, govt should put an end to all these illegal activities to preserve harmony in the district," said Ravi. Individuals involved in cow slaughter violate constitutional principles, yet authorities maintain equal treatment towards both perpetrators and those who stand against such acts. Ravi urged the police and govt to destroy the organised ecosystem that promotes love jihad, due to which several families have suffered. While PM Narendra Modi has a vision to make India a developed nation by 2047, there are some organisations like SIMI, PFI, and Indian Mujahideen working with the agenda for Islamisation of the nation. The major sources of funding for all illegal activities are ganja, drugs, betting, illegal mining, and sand trade, Ravi said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ravi advocated for prohibiting religious texts that promote jihad and destruction of 'kafirs'. He emphasised that implementing restrictions on such religious literature would foster harmony. He also criticised the Congress for not visiting the house of Suhas Shetty. "The Congress govt is trying to frame Hindutva leaders in the Abdul Rahiman murder case," he alleged. On allegations that CM Siddaramaiah chose to dine at a hotel even after being informed of multiple deaths due to the stampede, Ravi said if it was true, even God will not forgive our CM. "If it is true, he has no right to continue as the chief minister," he added.

Maharashtra polls were match-fixed, Bihar next: Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at the Election Commission after the poll watchdog rejected his allegations of rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly election. Reacting to the EC's refutation attributed to the commission officials who spoke on anonymity, Gandhi said, "Evasion won't protect your credibility. Telling the truth will". Also read: 'LOP's desperation over Congress losses on display,' says BJP Sharing his op-ed published in 'The Indian Express', headlined "Match-fixing Maharashtra", on X, Rahul reiterated the allegations he has been making since the poll's result was announced. The 2024 Maharashtra assembly election was a "blueprint for rigging democracy", he said, alleging that this "match-fixing" would next happen in Bihar and "then anywhere BJP is losing". Step 2: Add fake voters to the roll. Step 3: Inflate voter turnout. Step 4: Target the bogus voting exactly where BJP needs to win. Step 5: Hide the evidence." He said, "It's not hard to see why BJP was so desperate in Maharashtra. But rigging is like match-fixing - the side that cheats might win the game, but damages institutions and destroys public faith in the result."
