Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and former CM Mehbooba Mufti engaged in a war of words over Tulbul Navigation project on the Wular Lake in north Kashmir. The CM accused Mufti of trying to "please people across the border" while Mufti said Abdullah's assertions were "dangerously provocative".It all started on Thursday when Abdullah shared an aerial footage of Wular Lake, stating: "Now that the IWT has been 'temporarily suspended', I wonder if we will be able to resume the project.""It will give us the advantage of allowing us to use the Jhelum for navigation. It will also improve the power generation of downstream power projects, especially in winter," said Abdullah.The Tulbul Navigation Project, popularly known as the Wular Barrage Project , was initiated in the 1980s, but work was suspended due to Pakistan's objection. The work restarted in 2010, with the then NC-Congress government, also led by Abdullah, said Article 9 of IWT permitted projects meant for non-consumptive use. In 2012, unidentified militants lobbed a grenade towards a bund of the barrage and even thrashed some of the workers at the project site.In response to Abdullah's comments, Mufti wrote that J&K CM's comments amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan are deeply unfortunate and dangerously provocative. She said people deserve peace as much as anyone else in the country. "Weaponising something as essential and life-giving as water is not only inhumane but also risks internationalising what should remain a bilateral matter," said Mufti.To this Abdullah retorted, saying it's unfortunate that Mufti's "blind lust to try to score cheap publicity points and please some people sitting across the border" makes her to refuse to acknowledge that IWT has been one of the biggest "historic betrayals" of the interests of the people of J&K. Mufti then claimed that NC founder Sheikh Abdullah abandoned the struggle for plebiscite in 1975, when he was made the chief minister of J&K.The J&K CM in response said that taking cheap shots at a person Mufti herself has called Kashmir's tallest leader is the best the PDP leader could do. Abdullah also shared some media reports in which Mufti has said that IWT was against the interest of people of J&K.Mufti said that Abdullah invoking IWT now is a reckless ploy to derail the ceasefire.

Rs 3,200 cr crop insurance disbursed to farmers under PMFBY in Jhunjhunu
Jaipur: RajasthanChief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Monday, released Rs 3,200 crore as insurance claim amount to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) The amount was transferred directly to the bank accounts of more than 30 lakh farmers across several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, during a ceremony held at the Jhunjhunu airstrip. The event began with a special welcome for the dignitaries, where CM Sharma and Union Minister Chouhan were presented bouquets made from millets. By pressing a button, the Chief Minister and Union Agriculture Minister initiated the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for the first installment of insurance claims for the Rabi 2024-25 and Kharif 2024 seasons. Symbolic cheques were also distributed to beneficiaries of various schemes. Union Minister Chouhan announced that crop insurance claims worth Rs 3,200 crore were being disbursed to farmers nationwide from Jhunjhunu, providing much-needed relief to PMFBY beneficiaries. Since the formation of the state government till July 2025, Rajasthan alone has paid crop insurance claims worth Rs 3,912.53 crore to 148 lakh eligible policyholder farmers. Addressing the gathering, CM Sharma said that more than Rs 1,200 crore had been distributed for farmers in the state. Calling them the 'soul, pride, and honor' of the nation, the Chief Minister accused the previous Congress government of neglecting the welfare of farmers in the state. He alleged that Congress used the slogan 'Garibi Hatao' only for votes and failed to fulfill promises such as bringing Yamuna water to the region. The Chief Minister said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, an agreement with Haryana for Yamuna water had been signed, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) underway and a task force formed. 'In the coming time, the people of Shekhawati will definitely get Yamuna water,' he added. On this occasion, under the State-wise Crop Insurance Distribution, farmers in Madhya Pradesh received Rs 1,156 crore, Rajasthan Rs 1,121 crore, Chhattisgarh Rs 150 crore and other states had a share of Rs 773 crore. State Agriculture Minister Kirori Lal Meena has said that the state government had taken strict action against the sale of fake fertilisers and seeds, seizing large quantities and registering multiple FIRs.

Punjab facing food threat owing to torrential rains
Chandigarh: With floods wreaking havoc in some parts of Punjab, Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday slammed the Aam Aadmi Party government, holding it responsible for the unfolding crisis due to what he described as 'sheer administrative negligence'. Congress leader Bajwa highlighted that torrential rains in the hilly regions, coupled with the release of excess water from dams, have inundated thousands of acres of farmland in Kapurthala district. Similarly, water released from the Pong Dam has severely impacted farmers across nearly three dozen villages in the Mukerian subdivision. Tarn Taran district is facing a similar grim situation, with rising water levels threatening lives, homes, and crops, he said. The seasonal Ghaggar has turned destructive as the rainfall was heavy in this monsoon. Citing a media report, Bajwa pointed out that over a dozen locations along the Sutlej, the Beas, and the Ravi rivers are prone to flooding every monsoon. Yet, year after year, these known vulnerabilities remain unaddressed. This, he asserted, reflects a glaring failure in administrative planning, engineering preparedness, and interstate coordination. Experts have consistently blamed poor maintenance of flood-control systems, political friction with Haryana, and outdated disaster management infrastructure for the recurring devastation. 'The AAP government has clearly failed to learn from the 2023 floods, which caused widespread destruction across the state. It has not taken even the most basic measures, such as clearing drainage systems or reinforcing embankments to mitigate future risks,' Bajwa said in a statement.

SUDA Master Plan notified; expanded limits left out
Khammam: The Stambhadri Urban Development Authority (SUDA) on Wednesday notified its much-delayed Draft Master Plan, covering an area of 571.83 sq km, but crucially excluding the expanded limits as notified in October 2023 under GO MS No: 185. The Draft Master Plan, now open for public suggestions and objections for a period of 90 days, encompasses the jurisdiction of Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC) and 45 revenue villages across seven mandals — Wyra, Khammam Rural, Kusumanchi, Mudigonda, Chintakani, Raghunadhapalem, and Konijerla. The plan was originally commissioned in November 2019 by the then BRS government, aiming for a horizon year of 2041. The project was undertaken by Bengaluru-based Centre for Symbiosis of Technology, Environment and Management (STEM), in partnership with AARVEE Associates, Hyderabad. After completion in November 2021, the plan remained in limbo due to the need for technical and spatial modifications. However, following the change in administration, the Congress government expanded SUDA's jurisdiction through a government order issued in October 2023, bringing in Madhira and Sathupalli municipalities and 279 villages, while excluding agency areas. These newly added areas were designated as a 'Development Area'. Despite the formal expansion, the current draft notification remains restricted to the earlier SUDA limits. Speaking to The Hans India, former SUDA Chairman Bachu Vijay Kumar questioned the timing and intent behind the expansion. 'If the government was planning to notify the already-prepared draft, what was the necessity to expand the SUDA limits? The public deserves clarity on development plans for the newly included areas,' he said. He urged district ministers Bhatti Vikramarka, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, and Tummala Nageswara Rao to explain how the new jurisdictions will be integrated into the urban development framework. Officials indicated that the notified Master Plan will guide urban growth until 2050. Significantly, the notification process is being undertaken in the absence of a functional SUDA governing body, which was dissolved by the Congress government shortly after assuming office in 2023.
