‘Malaysia for Sabahans' more relevant slogan, says Ahmad Maslan

KOTA KINABALU: The slogan "Malaysia for Sabahans" is more relevant and inclusive than the often-used "Sabah for Sabahans", says Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
He said that while the latter may appeal to local sentiments, it risks narrowing Sabah's place within the broader national context.
"Sabah for Sabahans is too limited in scope. Malaysia for Sabahans is better — it means all of Malaysia is for the people of Sabah, and Sabah is part of Malaysia," he said.
Speaking at a press conference after a meet-and-greet session with Umno members in Kalabakan, recently held in Tawau, Ahmad said the "Sabah for Sabahans" sentiment is seasonal and often resurfaces during election periods.
"Sabahans are already deeply integrated with the rest of the country. More than 200,000 Sabahans work in Peninsular Malaysia. At the same time, many teachers, doctors, engineers, and officers from the peninsula are serving in Sabah," he said.
He noted that this interdependence demonstrates that Malaysia belongs to everyone, and the narrative of "Malaysia for Sabahans" should be promoted moving forward.
"Even I have a Sarawakian wife. This country is about integration — between people, states, and roles," he added.
Ahmad, who is also the Deputy Works Minister, said Umno and Barisan Nasional remain confident of regaining support in Sabah, citing his grassroots engagements across the state.
"I've toured many places — Kota Belud, Tuaran, Sepanggar, Putatan, Papar, Keningau, Pensiangan, Beaufort, Semporna, Lahad Datu, Kalabakan, and Tawau.
"The feedback I received was that people have tried various governments, but they now realise Barisan Nasional provided better stability," he said.
He added that if Umno-Barisan Nasional could win a significant number of seats in the next state election, the coalition could become a "big magnet" to attract other parties and form the state government.
"If we contest 30 seats, we can win 25, 29, or even all 30. That's the kind of momentum we're building," he said.

BN-PH pact likely to continue for GE16, but may change after that, says Zahid

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said BN is firm on continuing its alliance with PH in the run-up to the next nationwide polls despite calls for it to go solo. PETALING JAYA : While Barisan Nasional plans to continue its alliance with Pakatan Harapan in the next general election (GE16), BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says its strategies for elections after that may change. Zahid, the Umno president, acknowledged that there were calls for BN to contest in GE16 on its own, but said the coalition is firm on continuing its alliance with PH. However, he said BN's political strategies for the general elections that follow will be determined by the electoral performance of the parties in the alliance, Berita Harian reported. 'We do not know how many seats we will have, and how many seats they will have. 'Remember that, in Malaysia, differences in views are conventionally based on differing party 'colours'. We are willing to forget our different 'colours' for the sake of political stability,' he was quoted as saying. The Umno-led BN played a crucial role in enabling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to form the unity government in the wake of the 2022 general election, which resulted in a hung Parliament. PH had won 81 parliamentary seats while BN won 30, in what was the latter's worst electoral performance to date.

Zahid warns of a ‘cancer' that could bring down Umno

(Bernama pic) ARAU : Umno leaders and members must respond swiftly to issues raised by their detractors to avoid such issues becoming 'a severe cancer that could bring us down', party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today. Zahid said that if such issues are not addressed in a timely manner, they could go viral and affect public perception, regardless of their validity. 'Even if these are repeated or fabricated issues without basis, if left unaddressed, they will become a severe cancer that could bring us down,' he said after visiting the Arau Umno division today. He acknowledged that the party must accept the reality that it has been ineffective in managing issues, thus allowing other parties to win more seats in elections by manipulating public sentiment. 'There are parties that instil cult-like loyalty among their followers. Though their membership is smaller than ours, they secure more seats than we do,' he said. Zahid called on Umno leaders at all levels to deal with arising issues promptly and effectively. At the same time, the party leadership and the members must protect internal unity and party strength, even if faced with differing views and opinions, he said.

Umno to investigate whether its members joined Turun Anwar rally

Ahmad Maslan said the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim remained stable with a sizeable majority in Parliament. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno will look into allegations that some party members took part in the Turun Anwar rally in Kuala Lumpur today, says Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan. He said the party would wait for a full report before taking action. 'I will need to review these allegations, and the Umno headquarters will look into it and decide on them,' Sinar Harian reported him as saying at the Bagan Serai delegates' meeting in Perak today. Ahmad, who is deputy works minister, said the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim remains stable with a sizeable majority in Parliament. 'People may question us if our support goes as low as 113 seats. But we have 153. Even if 10 people go, we still have 143. So why do we need to take down the prime minister? He has strong support and the economy is developing well,' he said. (A total of 112 seats is enough for a simple majority in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat). Ahmad said the rally today had tarnished Malaysia's international image, making it seem as if the country is in turmoil. The Turun Anwar rally was attended by about 18,000 people, according to a police estimate, while the rally organisers, PAS Youth, claimed there were over 200,000 participants.
