TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One child has died, and another has life-threatening injuries after a motor vehicle accident involving a bicycle and an ambulance.
The incident happened around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of South 13th Street and Wheeler Avenue.
According to Lt. Justin Sears, the Terre Haute Police Department, responded to the collision involving a Trans Care ambulance and two juveniles on a bicycle.
'Upon arrival, Trans Care personnel were already providing medical aid to the injured juveniles. Both were transported to local hospitals for treatment,' Sears wrote in a news release. 'Tragically, one juvenile succumbed to their injuries. The second juvenile was later life-lined to an Indianapolis-area hospital with life-threatening injuries.'
The Terre Haute Police Department's Fatal Accident Reconstruction Team and Detectives responded to the scene and are investigating the incident, he added.
'At the time of the collision, the ambulance was en route to a separate emergency involving a single-vehicle accident with injury in the county,' Sears wrote.
THPD said Wednesday that this is an open investigation and more information will be released as 'permitted and appropriate.'

Woodstock man gets 50 year sentence for family violence conviction

The Cherokee County District Attorney's Office announced that a man was facing a 50 year sentence after negotiating a plea in a family violence case. District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway said that David Ray Graham, 38 of Woodstock, entered a negotiated plea to multiple charges on Thursday, taking a guilty plea for multiple charges related to a domestic violence assault. According to the DA's office, Graham faced eight charges stemming from a sheriff's office investigation in March 2024. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The DA's office said Cherokee County Sheriff's Office deputies went to Northside Cherokee Hospital after getting a report that a woman had been assaulted in a Woodstock home. While being treated for what the DA's office said were visible injuries, the victim told deputies that Graham had repeatedly punched and kicked her, threatened her with a machete and hammer and held her against her will in the home. 'This was not an isolated incident. David Graham had abused this woman before, and this time he could have killed her. Even after his arrest, he continued the cycle of abuse by calling from jail to threaten her and pressure her to recant. This sentence holds him accountable and brings justice for the fear and harm he inflicted.' Graham was charged with: 2 counts family violence aggravated assault False imprisonment 3 counts family violence battery Influencing a witness Terroristic threats The DA's office said Graham was sentenced to 50 years, with 20 in prison and the remaining 30 on probation. Graham's probation has special conditions, including no contact of any kind with the victim, he must participate in a family violence intervention program, be evaluated and treated for mental health and substance abuse and must forfeit all of his weapons. 'Domestic violence threatens the safety of all citizens and has no place in our community. For this reason, we remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice for all who are affected,' Treadaway said. 'We commend the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and the staff at Northside Cherokee Hospital for their compassionate response to protect and support the woman assaulted by this defendant.' Two Illinois senators help introduce bill on gun industry negligence

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTWO/WAWV)— Two Illinois Senators helped introduce a bill Monday that they believe will hold gun companies and sellers more liable in court. Senator Tammy Duckworth(D-IL) and U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) along with the help of many others including senators, U.S. Representatives, and and more than 80 members of congress introduced the bill Monday. The bill is entitled the Equal Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act. They believe the bill will ensure victims of gun violence can get their day in court. It will also repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) that was passed by Congress in 2005. The PLCAA gives the gun industry a unique legal liability shield that protects manufacturers from lawsuits. They believe that repealing this will allow gun companies and gun sellers to face liability for acts of gun violence that threaten public safety. 'The needless gun violence that too many Illinoisans—and Americans across the country—experience is heartbreaking and not reflective of the kind of future my daughters or any of our young people deserve,' Duckworth said. 'That's why I'm proud to join my colleagues in introducing the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, which will hold gun manufacturers accountable and bring justice to grieving families. I'll never stop working for commonsense gun safety reforms.' Congress originally stated that the reason for the PLCAA was that it was necessary to protect the gun industry from frivolous lawsuits. Due to this, though, the press release from the Senate states that numerous cases of gun violence victims around the nation have been dismissed based on the PLCAA, even when gun dealers acted in a way that would be negligent for other products. 'It's unconscionable that the gun industry is shielded from the consequences of negligent behavior that would result in liability if this were any other product,' said Durbin. 'Gun dealers and manufacturers do not deserve special treatment, and certainly not at the expense of the communities that are plagued by gun violence. By repealing this unjustifiable legal liability shield, this bill will allow victims of gun violence to seek justice and have their day in court.' The legislation is endorsed by Brady, GIFFORDS Law Center, Everytown for Gun Safety, March for Our Lives, Guns Down America, Newtown Action Alliance, and Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund.
