Dismembered bodies of 32 people found in abandoned home in Mexico: "We hope to find our loved ones"

CBS News6 days ago
Dismembered human remains found last week in an abandoned house in Mexico's violence-wracked Guanajuato state belong to a total of 32 victims, prosecutors said Monday.
The state prosecutor's office said 15 people had been positively identified so far from the remains, which were discovered during a search for missing people in the city of Irapuato.
The remains were in "fragmented and complex" condition, it said, adding that this had complicated the identification process.
Local media reports said investigators had found body parts in plastic bags.
Relatives of missing persons, who belong to a collective called "Hasta encontrarte" ("Until I find you"), visited the site Monday, hoping for news of their loved ones or fresh evidence.
"We hope to find our loved ones," a woman who requested anonymity for safety reasons told AFP. "It's been many years and we still know nothing. When these mass graves are found, we want to be present."
Organized crime groups frequently bury their victims in clandestine graves. The Mexican government's current tally of disappeared is nearly 132,000.
Guanajuato in central Mexico is a thriving industrial hub and home to several popular tourist destinations, but also the country's deadliest state due to gang turf wars, according to official homicide statistics.
Much of the violence in Guanajuato is linked to conflict between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of the most powerful in the Latin American nation. The Jalisco cartel is one of several that has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration.
Guanajuato recorded more than 3,100 murders last year, the most of any Mexican state, accounting for 10.5 percent of cases nationwide, according to official figures. It also had about 3,600 missing persons cases, out of more than 120,000 countrywide.
The bloodshed in the state has continued this year.
Last month, a local Mexican government official was shot dead while attending an amateur basketball game in Guanajuato.
In June, 11 people were killed and about 20 others injured in a shooting targeting a neighborhood party in Irapuato.
In May, 17 bodies were found by investigators in an abandoned house in the same city.
That same month, officials said gunmen opened fire and killed seven people, including children, in Guanajuato, and officers found two banners with messages alluding to the Santa Rosa de Lima gang.
In February, five women and three men were shot dead in the street in Guanajuato. In January, security forces clashed with gunmen in the state, leaving 10 suspected criminals dead and three police officers injured.

Darlington man 'Chop Off' strangled mother leaving her fearing for her life

A violent man left his mother fearing for her life as he strangled her before stamping all over her body. Shaun O'Connor, known as Chop Off, launched the brutal and sustained attack on his mother after he flooded her bathroom after shouting he was going to 'kill her'. The 42-year-old grabbed her in a headlock before wrapping a towel around her head after she confronted him about his behaviour. Teesside Crown Court heard how she tried to 'play dead' in a desperate attempt to get her son to stop the attack inside her Darlington home. Jenny Haigh, prosecuting, said O'Connor's mother called the mental health crisis team which resulted in the defendant becoming enraged and launching his attack on her. She said: 'He grabbed hold of her in a headlock, grabbed a towel and put it around her head. She said he was pushing her face down onto the floor and she couldn't breathe. 'She says he was telling her he wanted her 'gone' and she could feel pressure on her neck. She tried to play dead but she couldn't do that as she couldn't breathe.' Miss Haigh said when the police arrived at the victim's home, she managed to throw the house keys out of the window to help them get in. 'She shouted down to the police that her son was trying to smothercate her and she said that if the police hadn't got there when they did, she 'would have been gone',' she added. 'She said she was petrified and passed out. The complainant said that he was stamping all over her body and she told police that he wanted to kill her.' Shaun O'Connor (Image: Durham Constabulary) The prosecutor said O'Connor's mother was fearful for her life and believes that if the police hadn't arrived when they did she would have been 'in the ground'. The court heard how O'Connor had previous convictions for assaulting his mother including one on Christmas Day where he pushed her into a bush and on another occasion where he wrapped masking tape around her face. In 2023, O'Connor was sentenced to two years in prison after he sexually assaulted two women, exposed himself to another, assaulted an innocent man and carried out a sickening sex act in a police station cell after his arrest. O'Connor, whose address was given as HMP Durham, pleaded guilty to attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm, intentional strangulation and two charges of criminal damage. Recorder Paul Reid adjourned the sentencing hearing to allow more time for a victim impact statement to be prepared and to obtain a medical update on the injuries suffered by the victim. O'Connor will return to court September 5 to be sentenced.

Inside story of when Aston Villa fan mum who mooned judge slashed woman with samurai sword

An Aston Villa fan mum who mooned a judge while being jailed for slashing a Blues fan has previously attacked a woman with a samurai sword. Rebecca Harris was sentenced to more than eight years at Birmingham Crown Court last week after being declared dangerous. The 35-year-old told Recorder Paul Stagg to 'f*** off' and 'kiss my white ass' as she bared her backside in an extraordinary outburst. READ MORE: Birmingham City fan, 16, has teeth kicked out by 'banned' hooligan She was jailed for viciously trying to 'chop' up Birmingham City fan Michael Keeling at The Gables Hotel in Solihull before committing a separate spate of assaults and racial insults to police. The court heard she had an 'appalling' criminal record featuring 44 previous convictions for 93 offences, including many for violence. Recorder Stagg stated the most 'worrying' were two separate incidents of 'wounding'. The first took place in January 2008 when she was aged 17. According to a crime log read to the court three females were involved in a 'physical altercation' when Harris approached brandishing a large knife. Harris engaged in a struggle with one of the females who suffered a cut to her skull, before she ran off towards Stephenson Tower, in Birmingham city centre. The next incident of 'particular concern' to the judge took place ten years later in September 2018 and involved a samurai sword. He read out the police log stating: "Injured party and offender (Harris) have been in the front room of the address having been up all night drinking. "Offender has been using the injured party's phone and has discovered messages being sent to various male friends. "Being the sister of the injured party's boyfriend she has not taken kindly to this and begun assaulting the injury party by way of grabbing her and hitting her. The crime record continued: "During the melee injured party has bitten offender's hand to get her off her. "At being bitten, offender has jumped off the injured party, gone to the window and picked up a samurai sword which was leaning against the window. "She has taken it from the sheath and has swung it in a downward motion cutting the rear of injured party's left leg causing a gaping gash approximately two inches by three inches and possibly ligament damage. "Ambulance called and injured party taken to hospital. "Offender told injured party to tell everyone she had got the injury from broken glass." Harris was sentenced to two years for that incident in 2019. Recorder Stagg regarded both incidents as of 'grave concern'. A probation report stated Harris had been the victim of violence all of her life and was 'entirely lacking in victim empathy' due to her diagnosis of emotionally unstable personality disorder. Many of her issues were attributed to 'excessive drinking'. The report concluded Harris posed a medium risk of serious reoffending while the predictor of violent offending was 'very high'. Recorder Spragg subsequently concluded she was dangerous. FULL STORY: Aston Villa fan mum moons judge saying 'kiss my a***' as he jails her for Blues fan attack Harris had attacked Birmingham City fan Michael Keeling at The Gables Hotel in Solihull where they were staying on February 4 last year. She branded him a 'Zulu' in reference to the Blues' notorious hooligan firm and warned she would 'chop you up'. Harris grabbed a knife and caused a deep gash to his face and wounds to his hands. She claimed she acted in self defence but a jury found her guilty of wounding with intent. Harris went on to admit multiple offences of assaulting emergency workers and racially aggravated harrassment after she kicked, spat at and racially abused officers on September 24, including chanting 'EDL' and 'Tommy Robinson'. She was sentenced to two months for the latter crimes on top of an eight-year term with an extended three-year licence for the wounding.

Rash of shootings in Chicago's Austin neighborhood may have stemmed from party, sources say

Two people are dead, and at least seven others were injured, in a series of three different shootings in the South Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side overnight Saturday into Sunday. Social media posts showed a huge party in the area as police arrived. Police have not said if the shootings are all connected, but CBS News Chicago has learned they may have stemmed from the party. Some social media posters showed hundreds of people in the streets in South Austin overnight, calling it a Club Jroy event. Another post said the event went on for 10 blocks. Some videos also show the start of some of the violence. Social media video documented the shooting started around midnight on Lamon Avenue near West End Avenue — though a police incident report placed the first shooting at 1:40 a.m. In that incident, Chicago police said officers responded to a person shot and found the victim, a 20-year-old woman, with multiple gunshot wounds to her arms. She was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in good condition. Just before 3 a.m., a mass shooting transpired about a block away, around West End and La Crosse avenues. A woman was killed and five others were wounded: At 4:37 a.m., another shooting transpired — this one on Maypole Avenue near Lavergne Avenue. Two 18-year-old men were approached by two others, who fired guns in the directions of the teens as a fight ensued. One of the 18-year-olds, identified as Kaleb Williams, was hit twice in the back and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The other 18-year-old was hit in the arm and was taken to Mt. Sinai, initially listed in good condition. The numbers added up quickly. A police source told CBS News Chicago that police officers were so outnumbered, they had to call in units from near O'Hare International Airport, the Northwest Side, and downtown. CBS News Chicago tried to approach Mayor Brandon Johnson at a public event Sunday, asking the mayor to talk to us about the shootings and police staffing, but he would not stop for comment. Meanwhile, the organizers who promoted the event on social media acknowledged in a video clip that he had thought about canceling. CBS News Chicago tried reaching the promoter through social media platforms, but have not heard back.
