Connor McDavid's future with the Edmonton Oilers may be settled sooner than expected, according to two well-connected podcast hosts.
The 2 Mutts Hockey podcast
reports that the Oilers captain is expected to finalize a contract extension shortly after Team Canada's Orientation Camp later this month.
If accurate, this would end months of speculation and give Edmonton clarity heading into the 2025–26 NHL season.
Connor McDavid's contract extension with Edmonton Oilers expected after August Team Canada camp
According to the podcast, McDavid's extension is likely to be signed between August 26–28, following the Team Canada Orientation Camp in Calgary. The plan, they claim, is to make the deal official before the Oilers' annual Captain Skates and the start of training camp.
While specifics are still under wraps, the hosts suggest Edmonton is preparing for either a two-year or four-year extension, but not the maximum eight-year term.
The projected average annual value (AAV) has reportedly climbed from $16 million to around $17.5 million. This short-term approach could position McDavid for an even bigger payday in the near future, while also giving the Oilers a clearer championship window.
What McDavid's contract means for Edmonton Oilers' future and NHL landscape
If McDavid signs on the suggested timeline, the Oilers can enter training camp without the distraction of contract uncertainty hanging over their franchise player.
The timing also suggests both sides have been aligned on the extension for some time, choosing to keep discussions quiet until the right moment.
For McDavid, a shorter deal allows flexibility, either to capitalize on rising league revenues or to reassess his future with Edmonton after another playoff run. A four-year term would give the Oilers stability during what remains of his prime years, while a two-year pact could put him in position for a record-breaking contract in his early 30s.
Last season, McDavid recorded 100 points in just 67 games, bringing his career total to an astonishing 1,082 points in 712 games. His production and leadership remain unmatched, making him central to any championship ambitions in Edmonton.
While the Oilers and McDavid have yet to confirm the details, insider reports point to a late August announcement that will keep the league's most dynamic player in Edmonton, at least for the short term. For Oilers fans, it's a reason to celebrate; for the rest of the NHL, it's a sign that Edmonton's Stanley Cup window remains wide open.

Lian Bichsel set for breakout season as Dallas Stars' physical presence

Lian Bichsel (via Getty Images) Swiss blueliner Lian Bichsel established himself last season in his initial full year in the NHL , and now the 21-year-old appears ready to play a larger role for the Dallas Stars in the 2025-26 season. With the rosters in flux on the blue line and postseason experience under his belt, Lian Bichsel is set to become the foundation of the defensive identity of the team. Rookie year sets stage for greater expectations from Lian Bichsel At 6-foot-7, 231 pounds, Lian Bichsel's size was never an issue, but last year showed that he could pair that size with poise and versatility at the top level. After beginning the year with the AHL's Texas Stars, where he accumulated 9 points in 28 games, Lian Bichsel got an NHL call-up in December. A mid-season trip back to the minors provided him more time to work on his game, but fate intervened again in January when Miro Heiskanen suffered a season-ending knee injury. Since then, Lian Bichsel has become a mainstay in the Dallas Stars lineup, sharing shifts with veterans Ilya Lyubushkin and Matt Dumba. That physicality ratcheted up in the playoffs, where he had an astonishing 21 hits per 60. However, it is important to note that head coach Pete DeBoer will have several right-shot options to match with Bichsel. And any pairing might ask the Swiss defender to modify his game.
