Koraput couple forced to pull plough for marrying against customs: Police register case, start probe

JEYPORE: A day after a tribal couple was tied to a yoke and paraded like bullocks through the streets of Pedaitiki village in Narayanapatana block, Koraput police suo motu registered a case on Monday and started investigation into the inhuman incident. As part of probe, the Narayanapatana block development officer (BDO), tehsildar and IIC visited Pedaitiki and inquired about the involvement of villagers who forced Narendra Pidika (22) and Asanti Pidika (21) to undergo the 'purification' ritual for marrying in the same tribal clan. Around six villagers were also called to Narayanapatana police station for questioning and later released. Koraput collector V Keerthi Vasan asked all the BDOs of the district to spread awareness among the tribal communities in their respective areas not to adopt such practices in the name of purification rituals. The collector also urged the PRI members to remain alert and prevent such acts by tribal communities. 'The administration has taken the issue very seriously and directed the BDOs and PRI members to prevent such inhuman acts in the tribal villages. No one will be allowed to harm anyone's self respect or rights in such a manner. People found indulging in these practices will face strict action,' he added. Sources said Narendra and Asanti Pidika, both belonging to the Kondh community, fell in love and got married. They eloped to Andhra Pradesh during the Rath Yatra festival and returned to their respective homes three days back. However, their union was not accepted by the tribal community which considered marriage between blood relatives a taboo. On Sunday, a meeting was convened by village elders and family members of the couple following which they decided to carry out the 'purification' ritual before accepting the marriage. As part of the ritual, the couple was tied to a yoke and paraded like bullocks on the streets of Pedaitiki in full public view. Subsequently, they were made to offer prayers before the village deity and finally allowed to stay in Narendra's house.

Eggs hurled at Rath Yatra devotees in Toronto: Viral video sparks outrage; Naveen Patnaik demands MEA action

Screengrab from video by Sangna Bajaj A peaceful Rath Yatra procession in Toronto was disrupted when residents of a nearby building allegedly hurled eggs at devotees. The incident gained attention after a video went viral on Instagram, capturing eggs thrown near the procession. Narrating the incident, Sangna Bajaj wrote on Instagram, 'Someone from a nearby building threw eggs at us.. Why? Because faith makes noise? Because joy looked unfamiliar? We didn't stop. Because when Lord Jagannath is on the streets, no hate can shake us." The Toronto based user said the procession continued despite the disruption with participants maintaining their devotion and spirit. 'We were stunned. Hurt. But we didn't stop. Because hate can never overpower faith,' she said. The attack took place during Iskcon's 53rd annual Rath Yatra in Toronto, celebrated on July 11 from 11 am to 1 pm. According to Iskcon, the Rath Yatra is a public and vibrant celebration where devotees bring the deities, Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra Devi, out onto the streets, accompanied by loud kirtans and devotional singing. "We have strongly taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the perpetrators of the act accountable. Former Odisha chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik expressed deep concern over the incident. Another tribal couple forced to pull plough in Odisha as 'purification' for marrying against customs

BERHAMPUR/JEYPORE: In a rerun of the Rayagada shocker involving public punishment for marrying against community norms, a tribal couple of Koraput district was tied to a yoke and paraded like bullocks through the streets of Pedaitiki village in Narayanapatana block on Sunday. The victims, Narendra Pidika (22) of Pedaitiki and Asanti Pidika (21) of Nadimitiki village under Narayanapatana block, are reportedly from the same clan. The duo, from the Kondh community, fell in love and got married. They eloped to Andhra Pradesh during the Rath Yatra festival and returned to their respective villages two days ago. However, their union was not accepted by the local community which considered marriage between blood relatives a taboo. On the day, a meeting was convened by village elders and family members of the couple following which they decided to carry out a 'purification' ritual before accepting the marriage. As part of the ritual, the couple was tied to a yoke and paraded like bullocks on the streets of Pedaitiki in full public view. Subsequently, they were made to offer prayers before the village deity and finally allowed to stay in Narendra's house. 'As per our belief, if a marriage takes place within the same clan, it invites the wrath of the goddess, causing crop failure and disease outbreaks. This ritual is meant to cleanse the village of that sin,' said Narendra's cousin Santosh Pidika. Local ward member Gumpha Huika echoed the same sentiment and called it a 'traditional purification process' through which the couple seeks forgiveness from the elders. 'Only after such a ritual can they be allowed to live together,' Huika said and added, 'Asanti's family had also agreed to the marriage only on the condition that tribal customs were respected.' The incident drew criticism from activists who demanded immediate intervention by the administration and action against those responsible for orchestrating such an act. As of now, no police complaint has been filed, and local authorities are yet to comment on the matter.
