No Reason To Worry: Top Medical Body Chief As Covid Cases Rise

Amid an uptick in Covid cases in some parts of the country, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Dr Rajiv Behl Monday said the severity of infections as of now is generally mild and there was no cause for worry.
Speaking about new Covid variants being traced, he said genome sequencing of samples in the west and south have shown that the new variants are not severe and are Omicron sub-variants. These are LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB. 1.8.1.
The first three are more prevalent, Dr Bhel said. "Samples from other places are being sequenced and we will know in a day or two if there are more variants." The ICMR DG said there has been an uptick in cases --first from the south, then west and now from northern India. All these cases are being monitored through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
Besides that, ICMR's nationwide respiratory virus sentinel surveillance network is keeping a watch on emerging infections and pathogens, he said.
"Whenever cases increase, we look at three things. It's dependent on three factors with the first being how transmissible it is, conversely how fast the cases are increasing. Previously we saw Covid cases double in two days, but this time it is not that cases are increasing rapidly.
"Secondly, are the new variants evading our previous immunity? When new variants come, they evade immunity -- be it natural or from the vaccine. But there's nothing to worry about at the moment," Dr Bhel said.
He also said that the third factor is the percentage of severe cases in all Covid instances.
"Are we getting a very severe disease without comorbidities? As of now, the severity is generally low. There's nothing to worry about. We should be vigilant and we should always be prepared," the ICMR DG asserted.
Dr Bhel also informed reporters that the Union Health secretary chaired a meeting on Sunday that was also attended by the director general of health services and himself.
"We have been closely monitoring the situation. We should be vigilant at this moment, but there is no cause to worry. The general public should be vigilant. There is no need to take any such action as of now," he said.
The officer added that the WHO database has been showing that the new variants were not causing severe disease.
"People do not need to take any immediate action. They should follow normal precautions. So, there is nothing special to do right now."
Asked about the need for a booster dose, he said there is no need for vaccination as of now. "India has the capability to make vaccines and if need be, we can make any vaccine in no time." As of May 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies LF.7 and NB.1.8 subvariants as Variants Under Monitoring, not as Variants of Concern or Variants of Interest. But these are the variants that are reportedly driving the rise in Covid cases in China and parts of Asia.

A statewide analysis of 1,700 cases reported from January till June 10 this year also found that the dominating lineage in Maharashtra is the XFG variant of the SARS-CoV2 virus, which causes Covid. The Whole Genome Sequencing of 184 Covid-19 samples from across Maharashtra found that 84 samples had the XFG variant, making it the dominating lineage. The LF.7 variant was detected in 34 samples while 27 samples reported the JN.1 variant. The NB.1.8.1 variant was found in one sample from a 29-year-old woman in Pune, who had previously travelled to Hyderabad on May 16 and later had symptoms like fever, sore throat, headache and stomach pain. Her sample was collected on May 26 and sent for genome sequencing, according to state health authorities. Overall, a total of 18,885 suspected samples were tested this year of which 1,700 were Covid-19 positive. Of these, 753 Covid cases were reported from Mumbai and 443 from Pune and the Covid positivity rate stands at 9 per cent. The maximum number of cases were reported in May (742) and June (951). Presently, 105 patients have been hospitalised of which 34 are from Pune, 22 from Navi Mumbai, 15 from Mumbai and 11 from Thane. Fifteen persons require intensive care while one is on ventilator support. A total of 21 deaths have been reported. As per the report a total of 1,064 persons have recovered. Meanwhile, of the 1,700 cases, an equal number of men and women had the infection while an age-wise analysis found that 291 persons are in the age group 21 to 30 years, 360 in the 31-40 age group, 262 in the 41 to 50 age group and 190 in the 51 to 60 age group. There were 208 persons in the 61-70 years age group, who had Covid infection, while 170 were in the 71-80 age group. Since 2020, Maharashtra reported over 81.80 lakh cases and 1.48 lakh deaths. The state authorities conducted a review of the Covid situation and as per the report since 2020, Maharashtra has reported a total of 81,80,064 Covid cases and 148,623 deaths. Last year there were 5,528 Covid cases and 35 deaths while in 2023 Maharashtra had reported 36,173 cases and 137 deaths. A mock drill of the state's preparedness to deal with Covid cases also indicated that there were 2572 ventilator supported beds, 3781 ICU beds, 13871 oxygen supported beds and 9658 beds without oxygen support. KGMU doctor, MBBS student among 8 test positive for Covid
Lucknow: A resident doctor and an MBBS student at KGMU were among 8 who tested positive for Covid-19 in city on Wednesday taking the tally to 22 so far. The new cases bring Lucknow's active caseload to 17, with a total of 22 individuals contracting the virus in the recent past, five of whom have recovered. The senior resident doctor from the gynaecology oncology department, whose report came positive on Tuesday, experienced symptoms like fever, cold, cough, and body ache since last Friday. Following the diagnosis, the doctor reportedly returned to home district in Lakhimpur Kheri. An MBBS third-year student also tested positive. KGMU spokesperson Dr Sudhir Singh said both patients exhibit mild symptoms and their condition is stable. They have been isolated and prescribed necessary precautions and medication. The MBBS student, residing in the hostel, has been isolated within the premises. Also, a 61-year-old resident of Mayur Vihar Colony in Indiranagar tested positive. The elderly patient, who has no travel history, suffers from a severe heart condition with 50% coronary artery blockage. While currently in home isolation, doctors recommended hospitalisation due to underlying health issues. A health department official said: "All the patients found positive are currently in home isolation and stable."
