Samuel Zadeng's boxing gold puts Mizoram on Khelo India Youth Games medal tally; Haryana, Delhi dominate
For 17-year-old Samuel Zadeng, boxing isn't just a sport, it's a legacy and a lifeline. Born to former national level boxer ZD Lalrensanga, the Mizoram teenager has taken his first big step towards carving a name of his own, by clinching the gold in the boys' 70kg category at the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) in Bihar. His gritty 5-0 (Unanimous Decision) victory over Peaveen Yadav of Uttar Pradesh in Wednesday's final helped Mizoram open their account in the tournament.
Sagar Thakur of Himachal Pradesh and Anshul Khasa of Haryana settled for the bronze medals in the weight class. But for Samuel, the medal is just part of the mission. Fresh off a bronze at the Youth National Boxing Championships in Greater Noida, the young pugilist is determined to earn a place in the Khelo India Scheme, which would grant him a monthly stipend of ₹ 10,000 and access to improved training facilities.
It's a goal driven not just by ambition, but by circumstances. Samuel's family lives on a modest army pension drawn by his father, who has been battling a neurological condition since 2019. The illness left him in intensive care for weeks, and even now, he remains mostly confined to their home in the Bawnkaun locality of Aizawl. A significant portion of the family's income goes toward his treatment, leaving little for Samuel's training needs.
'This is my first time at the Khelo India Youth Games,' a visibly elated Samuel shared after his win. 'I came here focused, after the bronze at Nationals. The priority is to get into the Khelo India Scheme, it would ease the pressure on my family and give me the platform to grow as a boxer,' Samuel told SAI Media.
A three-time silver medallist at the state level, Samuel finally broke through with a gold in 2024, becoming the reigning state champion in his weight category. The younger of two siblings, his elder sister works in Chennai as an air hostess for a private airline, Samuel draws strength from his family's legacy. Both his father and uncle were boxers, and now it's his turn to carry the mantle.
'My dream is to represent India at the highest level. KIYG is only the beginning of that journey. This medal is not just a reward, it's a message to myself that I belong here,' he said.
For Samuel, every punch is not just a fight in the ring, it's a fight for a future, for his family and for a shot at putting Mizoram on the world boxing map. While Samuel made headlines for Mizoram, Haryana pugilists dominated the boys' events, bagging six of the 10 gold medals on offer. Delhi girls were equally impressive, clinching five of the 10 golds across different categories.
In the boys' 55kg final, Chandigarh's Harsh edged past Delhi's Tikam Singh with a 4-1 split decision. Despite a strong start from Tikam, Harsh mounted a fierce comeback in the second and third rounds, landing a barrage of jabs and hooks to take the win. Haryana's Jaitan and Uttar Pradesh's Sundram Yadav won bronze in the category.
Among the girls, Manipur's Radhamani Longjam fought her way to a narrow 3-2 split decision win over Punjab's Muskan in the 57kg final. Haryana's Nisha also showcased resilience in her 3-2 victory over Rajasthan's Jigyasa Patel to claim the 65kg gold.

Exclusion of Arunachal weightlifter from Commonwealth trials slammed
GUWAHATI The Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA) and other organisations in the State have slammed the exclusion of weightlifter Sambo Lapung, a consistent gold medal winner, from the trials for the Commonwealth Championships 2025. Lapung appealed to the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) a few days ago, requesting a chance to participate in the trials scheduled for June 13-14, but his plea was rejected. In a letter to Indian Olympic Association president P.T. Usha on June 5, AOA secretary general Bamang Tago sought justice for Lapung, who was allegedly ignored to accommodate Harshit Sehrawat of Haryana. A copy of the letter was sent to Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, the Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Director General of the Sports Authority of India. Lapung hails from the East Kameng district, which falls under the Arunachal West parliamentary constituency represented by Mr Rijiju. 'Lapung, a three-time national gold medallist and record holder, has consistently dominated the 96 kg category, securing gold at the Senior National Weightlifting Championships held in Chandigarh (2022), Itanagar (2023), and Himachal Pradesh (2024). His outstanding performances include lifting 338 kg in the 2023 Nationals, outperforming his closest competitors, including Harshit Sehrawat, who secured silver with a total of 328 kg,' Mr Tago wrote. 'Despite this, the IWF released a selection list that excluded Lapung from the 94 kg category trials, while selecting Sehrawat, typically a 102 kg lifter, based on his silver medal performance at the Inter Railways Championship (335 kg). This selection, bypassing a reigning national champion who has repeatedly outperformed the selected athlete in direct competition, has raised serious concerns over transparency, meritocracy, and possible regional bias,' he wrote. Later, Mr Tago told reporters that Sehrawat could have been favoured because his father is a coach or because of the State he hails from. 'This matter is not only about one individual. It reflects a growing pattern of underrepresentation and neglect of athletes from the northeastern region in national-level selections. Talents such as Sambo Lapung, Kojum Taba, Jimjang Deru, and Soram Hitler Tagru have brought pride to the country. Yet, their efforts are too often overlooked during crucial opportunities,' he said. The East Kameng Social Welfare and Cultural Organisation also criticised the IWF for ignoring Lapung and sought the intervention of Mr Rijiju. The organisation said Lapung's exclusion not only undermines his achievements but also wounds the sentiments of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the region beyond. 'This decision reinforces a recurring pattern of perceived stereotyping and discrimination against athletes from our region in mainland India,' its chairperson, Raya Flago, said.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju inaugurates residential wing of Weightlifting Warriors Academy
Modi Nagar (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday inaugurated the residential wing of the Weightlifting Warriors Academy, the centre where Olympic Silver Medalist Mirabai Chanu trains, marking a significant milestone in India's Olympic preparations for 2036. The state-of-the-art facility, established by Chief National Coach Vijay Sharma in September 2024, will now provide accommodation for up to 60 athletes in 30 fully equipped rooms. Currently, 40 young athletes aged 8-14 years and 15 elite athletes are also training at the academy. Speaking at the inauguration, Rijiju congratulated the team and expressed his confidence in the academy. 'I would like to congratulate the team at Weightlifting Warriors that the residential centre has opened. I am not just wishing you all good luck, but I have faith that a great champion will emerge from here. I have seen a lot of academies in my life... but the way Vijay has run this academy with dedication, and the way they work hard to make it a success. I have never seen that anywhere else,' he said, as quoted from a press release by Weightlifting Warriors. Olympic Silver Medalist Mirabai Chanu, who trains at the academy, expressed her commitment to mentoring the next generation and said, 'The 2036 Olympics is not just a dream for us, it is a commitment for our country. Chief National Coach Vijay Sharma shared his vision: 'The dream I had of an academy has come true today. New TNFA president Shanmugam sets forth his agenda to revive the sport in the State
Former Tamil Nadu football team captain S. Shanmugam, who was elected president of the Tamil Nadu Football Association (TNFA) last Saturday in an election held for the first time since 2014, spoke about his agenda over a phone call on Saturday. 'Every year, the association's registration is to be renewed with the Registrar of Societies under the Societies Registration Act (1860). This hasn't been done for a few years. Thus, the association is unable to receive grants from the SDAT and AIFF. So, my foremost task is to renew our registration,' he said. Claiming that the State championships for all age categories, including the senior category, have been discontinued for several years now, he said that he aims to revive them. 'The probables for the Nationals were selected from those tournaments. Around 40 would be selected first, and 20 would then be shortlisted for a 10-15 day camp for the Nationals. I intend to bring that back into practice. 'For instance, the junior (boys and girls) National football championship is to be held from July 10 to 25. For that, the State championships have been planned to be held for boys in Virudhunagar and for girls in Dindigul from June 20 to 27,' he said. The 62-year-old said that he wants to make it mandatory for the District associations to conduct their annual league, like the Chennai Football Association's senior division league. 'There was this Champions Club Trophy for the District league champions, which has been discontinued for around nine years now. The event helped clubs earn points for entry into the I-League. Consequently, the possibility of our (TN) clubs getting into the I-League has reduced. So, it is to be revived as well,' he added. Saying that he also intends to revive the premier National tournaments of the past across the State — like the Vittal Trophy and TFA Shield in Chennai and the Rockfort Trophy in Tiruchi — by getting into talks with the original sponsors, he added that there is a Super League Kerala-type 'Tamil Nadu Premier Football League' in the pipeline. 'It will have eight teams and will be played in the home-and-away format.' He further stated that a four- or five-member advisory committee will be formed, naming two members: the former CFA senior division league club and I-League champion Chennai City FC owner, Rohit Ramesh, and the Viva Chennai FC (CFA senior division) and Gokulam Kerala FC (I-League) owner, Praveen. Rohit currently also owns a minority stake of the Cambodian Club Angkor Tiger FC.
