'He Ran From Me!': Dominick Reyes Calls Out Jon Jones' Retirement Games

'He Ran From Me!': Dominick Reyes Calls Out Jon Jones' Retirement Games

News1812 hours ago
Reyes accused Jon Jones of ducking him and Aspinall, criticizing Jones' controversial retirement and quick return, tarnishing his legacy and frustrating fans.
Former light heavyweight title challenger Dominick Reyes didn't hold back when discussing Jon Jones' controversial retirement drama, accusing the former champion of ducking both him and current interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.
The MMA world was left scratching their heads six weeks ago when UFC CEO Dana White announced that Jones had officially stepped away from fighting, vacating his heavyweight title in the process. The move killed the highly anticipated unification bout with Tom Aspinall, who was subsequently promoted to undisputed champion and booked against Ciryl Gane for UFC 321 this October.
But Jones' retirement didn't last long. Just weeks later, 'Bones" was back in the UFC testing pool, eyeing a comeback at the historic White House card planned for July 2026. This flip-flopping left fans furious, and Reyes believes it's part of a larger pattern of deceptive behavior.
The Frustration Boils Over
'I think because he does this thing that he does, and he just strings everyone along, and he lies, and tells this and says that," Reyes explained during his appearance on the Pound-4-Pound podcast. 'And he's smug about it and arrogant. He's not being genuine. We just want a genuine answer out of you, bro. Not some bullcrap string everybody a long, 'Oh, well, maybe this, uhhhh.' Are you going to fight or not?"
The criticism gets personal when Reyes recalls his own experience chasing a rematch after their competitive UFC 247 title fight in 2020. Despite many believing Reyes won that contest, Jones retained his belt by decision.
'I did!" Reyes confirmed when asked about wanting a rematch. 'If you guys don't remember after that fight, I lobbied for the rematch for an entire year and he said, 'Drop the belt' and went to heavyweight. Literally that's what happened. People forget that, too. He ran from me! He said, 'You're not paying me enough to fight that guy. He's too dangerous.' That was literally his response."
With Jones' pattern of avoiding dangerous fights becoming clearer, fans are left wondering if the greatest fighter of all time is tarnishing his own legacy through calculated duck-and-dodge tactics.

Washington Sundar's 39-Ball Fifty Boosts India's Chances at The Oval

Last Updated: Washington Sundar's explosive 39-ball fifty at The Oval gave India a fighting chance in the fifth Test against England. Washington Sundar lit up The Oval on the third day of the fifth Test with his ferocious knock. The crowd and the Indian dressing room gave the all-rounder a standing ovation for his 39-ball fifty that put India in a position from where a victory seems to be a possibility. He tried shifting gears with one man left, but a poor connection with the ball led to his fall in the final session. With Ravindra Jadeja (53) and Mohammed Siraj getting out in quick succession, the onus of safeguarding India fell on the strong shoulders of Sundar. And he decided to go for the kill. At the end of the 84 th over, Sundar was trying to settle in with 17 off 23. In the next 23 deliveries, he had reached 53 and had smashed 4 sixes and as many fours. The next ball, he succumbed to a Josh Tongue delivery in an attempt to swish another maximum. With Sundar's dismissal, India were bowled out for 396 in the second innings, putting England in the chase of 374. NEUFC begin Durand campaign in style with 3-1 win over Malaysian side

Shillong, Aug 2 (PTI) Defending champions NorthEast United FC secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Malaysian Armed Forces FT (ATM FA) in their opening Group E match of the Durand Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, here on Saturday. Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie, the top scorer from last season's ISL, starred for NEUFC with a stunning hat-trick (23', 29', 70') to kick off the title defence in style. For the losers, Mohammad Amir scored a consolation goal in the 88th minute. The match started with both teams pressing hard and battling for possession. However, the breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when debutant Andres Rodriguez delivered a sublime through ball for Ajaraie, who coolly slotted it past the keeper with his left foot, sending it into the right corner. Just six minutes later, the Moroccan doubled the lead after a sublime team move. Initiated by Ajaraie himself, the forward played it wide to Jithin, who dazzled the defence with close control inside the box before squaring it back. Ajaraie made no mistake from close range, smashing it into the roof of the net. Lalbiakdika had an opportunity to make it 3-0 in the 39th minute but failed to keep his volley down. Moments later, Jithin floated in a cross for Ajaraie, but the Malaysian keeper was quick off his line to cut out the danger. The best chance for the visitors came just before halftime, when Ibrahim Muhamat's curling effort from the edge of the box was palmed away by Dipesh Chauhan. The second half began on an even footing, with both sides probing but unable to create any clear-cut chances early on. In the 59th minute, a shot from Muhammad Amir Faizal was blocked by Highlanders' defender Lalbiakdika, who had come on at halftime to replace Zabaco. The Malaysian Armed Forces began to show more attacking intent, coming close on two occasions in the final 10 minutes. However, they failed to capitalise, with poor finishing letting them down. Despite the Malaysian Armed Forces enjoying a momentary better spell, it was Ajaraie again who delivered the knockout blow. In the 70th minute, Bekey Oram delivered a lofted diagonal from the right half-space that found Ajaraie on the left. The Moroccan danced past defenders before curling a majestic left-footed shot into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick and seal the game. The Malaysian Armed Forces finally pulled one back in the 88th minute, with Muhammad Amir Faisal converting from close range, but it proved no more than a late consolation. MS Dhoni To Play In IPL 2026? CSK Legend Says 'For Next 5 Years I Can...'

Last Updated: Dhoni, who was last seen in action for CSK on May 25, 2025, has hinted at participation in IPL 2026. Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was retained for Rs 4 crore by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. And in the 2025 edition of the world's richest franchise cricket league, he played in all 14 league matches and scored 196 runs. He even served as the captain of the team after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an injury but was unable to help the five-time champions avoid the embarrassment of finishing last in the points table for the first time ever. After CSK's forgetful show in the IPL 2025, many fans and former greats feel that Dhoni won't play in the IPL again, but Dhoni didn't give any definite answer about his retirement after CSK's final match of the season. In a video going viral on the internet, when asked about his cricket future, Dhoni said, 'I just got a tick mark for the next five years I can play cricket. But the only catch is Doc only gave a clearance for eyesight. Body, He didn't gave a clearance for the body. But I cannot play cricket only with my eyes." — Bhuvan 🦁 (@bhuvanChari007) August 2, 2025 Dhoni said on Saturday the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad will bolster Chennai Super Kings' batting in the next edition of the IPL. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now," said Dhoni during a private function here, indicating that the Super Kings will retain the services of Gaikwad. While he was delighted for the return of Gaikwad to the CSK fold, Dhoni said the team will try to further strengthen the unit through the mini-auction later this year. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in," he added. Dhoni admitted that the Super Kings have been well below-par over the last two seasons, but said it was important for the team to identify those grey areas. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also. 'We were like, okay, there are some shortcomings. But first we needed to exactly figure out what were the shortcomings and then look at solutions," he noted. view comments First Published: August 02, 2025, 22:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
