The moment that keeps Forrest coming back for more at Celtic

That being said, there is at least one grizzled veteran of those longest of Celtic away days that has fond memories of facing Kazakh opposition. In fact, James Forrest had one of his most cherished moments in a Celtic jersey in a Champions League qualifier against Shakhter Karagandy, albeit in the home leg at Celtic Park.
After a 2-0 defeat on their travels way back in 2013, Forrest struck at the death in Glasgow to earn his side a 3-2 aggregate victory, and send Celtic into the group stage of the competition.
(Image: Colin Mearns) The feeling he had that night is one that has never really left him, and even after all these years, it is exactly the sort of moment that keeps the 34-year-old coming back for more.
"It's hard to describe,' Forrest said.
'That's why you keep playing, you want more because it's addictive, the feeling you have with the players.
'The buzz you get from it is, I don't get it with anything else, and as I said, it is addictive.
'When you've had so many highs with Celtic as well, it's hard. Sometimes you do that and then two days later you're travelling up and you're playing another game somewhere and you need to get going again.

'But then I think when you do experience stuff like that, it does make you think, 'I want more of that'.
'You go away pre-season, you're working five, six weeks and double sessions, and at games that maybe no-one's watching or training sessions that no-one's there, but then it all comes worth it when you get moments like that, one hundred percent.
'I always just think, just keep trying to work hard and keep trying to play for as long as I can, as long as I feel good, because I've done this since I was a wee boy.
'So, I just think try and go for it. I've got another year here, and as I said, I'm not even thinking about that now, just enjoying the games.
'It's pressure games every couple of days and it is great to be a part of."
If it is to be Almaty – and the Kazakhs hold a 1-0 advantage after hosting Slovan in the first leg of their tie last week – Forrest is well versed on how to handle it. And no matter what, he will be offering no excuses should Celtic fall short of the league phase of the competition.
"I think we've maybe been there like three or four times, and I've been there with Scotland as well,' he said.
'It is difficult because you probably need to go two days before the game just to adjust because of how far away it is.
'I think whatever team we get, it will be two difficult games. I think we've got enough experience, we've got a lot of international players, they know about the travel and stuff like that, and these away games can be like cup style in that as well.
'But then, Celtic Park is to be really intimidating for the other team as well.
'The club have got sports scientists, the physios and stuff like that; they've got people that are looking after it to give the boys the best chance.
'As I said, we've done it before, so whatever team we get, there'll be no excuses either way."
What may be driving Forrest this weekend is a desire to have a measure of revenge on Aberdeen for the way that last season ended, with the Dons denying Celtic a treble with their penalty shootout victory in the Scottish Cup Final.
This though, he says, is a fresh start.
'I think Aberdeen are one of the best teams in Scotland and I think every time you play them, there's a rivalry there anyway,' he said.
'You go to Pittodrie; every year I've been up there, the managers, coaches, fans, they all know it's a hard game, so I don't think we'll look much into the cup final.
'It's a new season and we want to get off to a good start and just keep the momentum going, and hopefully get another three points."
In the longer term, as well as hoping to do enough throughout the course of the season to earn another year at the club, Forrest still has an eye on the international scene.
(Image: Colin Mearns) The winger was desperately disappointed not to have seen any game time at all last summer during the European Championships, but he isn't closing the door on crowning his career with an appearance at next year's World Cup.
"I spoke to Steve Clarke a couple of times at the start of last season, and then I got a really bad injury in December for a few months,' he said.
'The main thing for me has always been making sure I'm playing well for Celtic and then if Scotland came along, great.
'But no, I've not spoken to him this season, so as I said, I just want to do well for Celtic in the games and then we'll just kind of see from there.
"I had the conversation with him last year, it was a good one, and because it was after I went to the Euros and didn't play, it was if he needed me, then he'd give me the call and it was just kind of left like that.
'So as I said, it's always kind of open and I would never shut the door. I think any player, you want to play in the top competitions and you want to play Champions League, you want to play for your national team.'
*James Forrest was speaking at Celtic's annual 'Touching the Trophies' experience, where season ticket holders with sensory impairments are given the opportunity to come to Celtic Park and physically engage with the club's silverware.

Arsenal transfer news: Eberechi Eze saga takes fresh twist as Gunners agree deal

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Eberechi Eze throughout the summer transfer window but it's Tottenham who are the favourites for his signature, while Oleksandr Zincheko could be on his way out It all starts here. Arsenal will kick off their 2025-26 Premier League campaign on Sunday, travelling to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. ‌ But the start of the new season doesn't mean the end of the Gunners' transfer business. In fact, things are set to get much busier after a relatively quiet few weeks after the signing of Viktor Gyokeres. ‌ The Swedish striker's arrival took Arsenal's summer spending to £195million, as Mikel Arteta bids to build a squad capable of finally winning the Premier League title. ‌ It's not all about incomings, though. Sales will be needed to offset the Gunners' spending, with a number of exits are in the pipeline. Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from the Emirates. Eze to miss Crystal Palace opener Eberechi Eze is expected to be left out of Crystal Palace's opening game of the season as he edges closer to a move to north London - but not with Arsenal. Tottenham have been installed as the favourites to sign the England international after Spurs star James Maddison suffered a serious knee injury in pre-season. Eze, 27, is open to joining Tottenham as he wants to play Champions League football, according to the Sun. Sources add that the Palace midfielder is unlikely to face Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. Should Arsenal hijack Tottenham's move for Eberechi Eze? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ Fenerbahce agree deal for Zinchenko Oleksandr Zinchenko reportedly has the chance to sign for Fenerbahce after Arsenal agreed a deal for his departure. Zinchenko, 28, is open to leaving Arsenal after entering the final year of his contract. Turkish outlet Sporx claim that Fenerbahce have been in talks with the Gunners for a week, adding that their sporting director, Devin Ozek, has met with Arsenal's Andrea Berta to discuss the Ukrainian defender. The two clubs are said to have agreed a €3m (£2.6m) loan fee with a €10m (£8.6m) option to buy at the end of the season, with all eyes now on Zinchenko's decision. ‌ De Jong plan drawn up Arsenal are planning to sign Frenkie de Jong as a free agent next summer, it's claimed. De Jong's current terms with Barcelona expire in June 2026 and despite indicating that he wants to stay, the 28-year-old midfielder is yet to sign a new contract amid their well-documented financial woes. Fichajes report that Barca need to beware, as Arsenal are plotting a move. Arteta sees De Jong as the perfect man to compliment his current midfield options and believes that his experience would be greatly beneficial.

Jayden Meghoma a Rangers target as Russell Martin eyes transfer reinforcements

The 19-year-old England youth international worked under Martin at Southampton before he joined the Bees in 2024, with a subsequent loan spell at Preston. Brazilian left-back Jefte, who joined Rangers from Fluminense last summer, is reportedly set to join Palmeiras for £6million. The Gers boss was speaking after the 4-2 win over Alloa booked a place in the quarter-final of the Premier Sports Cup where they will host the winners of Sunday's Livingston versus Hibernian tie, albeit first they have the opening leg of the Champions League play-off against Club Brugge at Ibrox on Tuesday. Martin said: 'Jefte was in yesterday, and then by yesterday evening, he's maybe not going to be here moving forward because it's a good deal for him and the club. 'So we'll see what happens over the next couple of days with that. 'And so we have to be ready to replace him, and we always have been ready. 'So Jayden is a player we know from Southampton, spent a year with us as a young boy, training every day, understands the work, top talent, plays for England at all the youth levels. 'Brentford signed him for a lot of money for a teenager, and he went on loan last year in the Championship and did really well. 'So he's a player we know and like, and hopefully at some point he'll be a Rangers player and you'll know that when he is.' Martin made 10 changes from the side which started in the second leg of the Champions League qualifier against Viktoria Plzen in midweek and the match ended with Emmanuel Fernandez, Mikey Moore and Thelo Aasgaard all having made their debuts, while fit-again Hamza Igamane got more minutes. Nedim Bajrami, Fernandez, James Tavernier (penalty) and Findlay Curtis scored for the home side with Joe Rothwell's own goal and a Scott Taggart tap-in counting for the League One outfit. Martin said: 'I saw some really good bits and some stuff that I didn't like, but I don't think I expected anything different with guys that just haven't played very much. 'When you make 10 changes to the team it's going to disrupt something. So my feeling is we get through, we score four goals, we should score more goals for sure. 'In the first half, after the first 15 minutes, when you can't quite sustain the same level of intensity, they caused some problems which shouldn't happen. 'And I mean that really respectfully, because the way they approached the game, they were great. But there was a lack of a bit of energy, because we had so much of the ball. 'A lack of energy without it could have been really costly. So we have a couple of moments we shouldn't have, but I'm pleased with a lot.' Alloa player-manager Andy Graham was pleased with his side's performance. He said: 'My overriding emotion is pride. We dug in at times but we also played and passed the ball under pressure. They should real composure. 'I'm really pleased from that perspective. You're always going to think 'what if' when you get it to 3-2 with a couple of minutes to go. 'But I'm not sitting here saying we deserved to win the game.'
