AP's New Liquor Policy Hits Telangana Border Sales
Until recently, the border areas of Alampur and Macherla were a hub for Andhra customers. Shops here were bustling with heavy footfall, thanks to a stark difference in liquor policies between the two states. Under former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's government, AP sold liquor exclusively through government-run outlets. The choice of brands was limited, the quality was often questioned, and the prices were steep, driving many AP customers across the border to Telangana, where most popular brands were readily available at comparatively affordable prices.
With the change in government, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has overhauled the old liquor policy, granting licences to over 3,000 private and retail vendors. Liquor is now sold openly across AP, with greater availability and at lower prices than before, though still slightly costlier than Telangana. This shift has resulted in nearly a 50% drop in liquor sales in Telangana's border towns from AP customers.
Narender, a resident of Kurnool living in the Alampur border area, noted that while prices in AP have reduced under the new policy, quality concerns persist. 'Even though the new policy has been implemented, people in border areas still prefer liquor from Telangana. By my estimate, sales here have dropped only by 3–5% because of AP customers switching over. Many are still crossing the border due to quality differences. In AP, some brands cost at least ₹10 more than in Telangana, and people are not happy with what's available,' he told Hans India.
Laxmikanth Reddy of Alampur recalled the bustling scene at the Pullur toll plaza, which was once thronged by AP customers before 2024. 'Now, the crowds are gone. The new policy has cut sales in border shops by almost half. Only a small fraction—maybe 2–5%—of AP customers still come here, mainly for better quality,' he observed.
For shop owners in Mahabubnagar's border areas, the change has been swift and sharp. What was once a lucrative market fuelled by AP customers has now dwindled, with only loyal quality-conscious buyers making the trip. While Telangana still retains an edge in brand variety and perceived quality, Andhra Pradesh's more competitive pricing and increased accessibility are shifting the balance. If the trend continues, the once-bustling liquor hubs along the Telangana-AP border may have to rethink their strategies—or risk toasting to the end of an era in cross-border wine sales.

"Mockery Of Democracy. Cancel It": Jagan Reddy Slams Andhra Panchayat Bypolls
Hyderabad: Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has called for fresh elections for the Pulivendula and Vontimitta zilla parishad by-polls - this time under the supervision of central forces to ensure a "fair" process - because those held Tuesday were "a mockery of democracy". Echoing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's ' vote chori ' battle-cry - an attack on the Election Commission and the Bharatiya Janta Party for 'colluding' to commit voter fraud - Mr Reddy declared, "What happened at Pulivendula and Vontimitta is the real 'vote chori'." Mr Reddy told reporters booth agents from his YSR Congress Party had been forced to abandon their posts and people had been bullied into voting for the ruling Telugu Desam Party. "Cancel the two elections and re-conduct them under the protection of central forces," he declared. The YSRCP boss made his demand with the party's two candidates sitting by his side. The party will move the court to cancel the election, the former Chief Minister said. The Pulivendula by-poll is a prestige issue for Jagan Reddy. Not only is he the MLA for the region, it is also a party stronghold. Vontimitta, meanwhile, is part of the Rajampet Assembly constituency won by the YSR Congress in the past two, i.e., 2019 and 2024, elections. Mr Reddy slammed the "atrocious and undemocratic" election process and accused TDP boss and his successor, Nara Chandrababu Naidu, of having set "a very bad precedent which is dangerous to democracy, and the spirit of elections is lost by such nefarious deeds..." He claimed the election had been tampered with despite police presence. Mr Reddy claimed an estimated 10,600 votes across 15 booths were suspect. He said around 700 police personnel had been deployed at these booths - not to ensure a peaceful election but to terrorise voters. He also slammed the shifting of polling booths, saying it was meant to threaten or confuse voters and force them to return without voting. The ex-Andhra Chief Minister also showed video clips that appear to show TDP workers from Jammalamadugu (a town in YSR Kadapa district) and other areas voting while locals - those who were supposed to vote from these seats - claimed they had not been allowed to vote. Mr Reddy claimed his party's Kadapa Lok Sabha MP, YS Avinash Reddy - also his cousin - had been placed under house arrest and "manhandled", after he complained of booth-capturing. The police said Avinash Reddy - who the party said was not in the polling area, as required by law - had been taken into custody over fears of violence between YSRCP and TDP workers. The cops also pointed out a TDP lawmaker - MLA Ram Gopal Reddy - had been similarly detained. But Jagan Reddy insisted the cops had favoured the TDP, declaring that party's cadre could move around the polling area and indulge in malpractice by claiming to be from the YSRCP. "Police were handpicked for this... they conducted the election in a totally biased manner to please Chandrababu Naidu... who has been harassing cops who do not toe his line." "This cannot be called an election as YSRCP polling agents - who play an important role in the election process, right from verifying voters' list to complaining about fake voters and then sealing the ballot boxes - were not allowed to operate," the former Chief Minister said. "Where is the need for an election if such practices are followed? This is a dangerous trend... as the State Election Commission did not consider our complaints on atrocities, violence, and police bias, and did not respond to our pleas to make CCTV footage public." Jagan Reddy also counterattacked after criticism from the Congress' Manickam Tagore, and blamed the national party for turning a "blind eye to the corruption" of the TDP-led coalition government in the southern state.

Violence, allegations mark ZPTC by-elections in Andhra Pradesh
KADAPA: The ZPTC by-elections in Pulivendula and Vontimitta turned volatile on Tuesday, marked by clashes, voter intimidation, and allegations of electoral malpractice between the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Both constituencies, seen as prestige battles, witnessed heavy police presence and preventive measures that failed to curb escalating tensions. In Pulivendula, police placed YSRCP MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy and TDP MLC Bhoomireddy Ramagopal Reddy under house arrest early Monday to prevent potential unrest. Avinash Reddy was taken into custody and briefly moved to Yerraguntla police station amid protests from supporters before returning to his Pulivendula office under tight security. DSP Murali Naik threatened to shoot YSRCP workers for resisting police orders during the ZPTC by-election campaign. Kurnool Range DIG Koya Praveen ordered YSRCP workers to vacate the office, citing security concerns, which sparked confrontations. YSRCP alleges TDP intimidation, large scale poll malpractices Avinash Reddy, staging a dharna at Yerraguntla's four roads circle, demanded the election's cancellation and a re-poll under central forces, alleging TDP-orchestrated rigging with police complicity. He accused TDP MLAs Chaitanya Reddy, BJP MLA Adinarayana Reddy, and Ravi of bringing outsiders from Jammalamadugu to cast bogus votes, presenting video evidence of fake voting at Nallapureddypalli. Labeling the election 'the worst in independent India,' Reddy criticized DIG Praveen and SP Ashok Kumar for allegedly aiding the TDP. Incidents of booth capturing and voter suppression were reported across villages like Kanampalli, where a voter was seen pleading with police to vote, and Dugganagaripalle and Erripalle, where TDP activists allegedly blocked women voters.
