SC upholds Comelec ruling on Quezon candidate disqualification

According to a statement, the SC ruled that the findings of the poll body were supported by substantial evidence. Seeking to remove doubts about the legality of the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) ruling, the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday announced that it upheld the disqualification of Matt Erwin Florido as representative of Quezon Province due to alleged vote buying. According to a statement, the SC ruled that the findings of the poll body were supported by substantial evidence. This stemmed from a complaint filed by registered voters and residents of Buenavista, alleging that Florido's camp distributed P1,000 bills along with free food, shirts, and transportation during a gathering on April 5 and 6. In his petition with the SC, Florido said that Comelec committed grave abuse of discretion and argued that the event was only for his campaign volunteers. The SC, however, noted that the event was not exclusive to campaign staff. It said that the event was clearly intended to gain electoral support. Aside from this, the SC said the distribution of cash and other items were not properly documented or liquidated. 'The SC emphasized that the lack of receipts, logbooks, or other records indicated that the funds were used to influence voters — constituting vote-buying under the Omnibus Election Code,' it said in a statement. According to the High Court, Florido's presence at the event also showed his knowledge and implied his approval. 'Although Florido ultimately lost in the 2025 elections, the SC still resolved the case to remove any doubts about the legality of the COMELEC's decision,' it said. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Fire inspector nabbed for robbery extortion, found guilty — NBI

A fire inspector who was previously arrested by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents for attempting to extort P400,000 from a job applicant has been found guilty by the Ombudsman, the bureau said Tuesday. In a statement, the NBI said the Office of the Ombudsman found the fire inspector administratively liable for violating the Republic Act 6713 and grave misconduct. He was dismissed from service with perpetual disqualification from holding office, forfeiture of retirement benefits, cancellation of his Civil Service Eligibility, and is prohibited from the Civil Service Exam. The NBI arrested the man during an entrapment operation on June 27. According to the bureau, the arrest stemmed from the complaint of an applicant that the fire inspector asked 'thanksgiving money' from her in the amount of P400,000 in exchange for her inclusion in the final roster of candidates for the position of Fire Safety Officer I. She said fulfilled all necessary requirements and was fully qualified for the position, but was allegedly denied the position due to the lack of a backer. — Joahna Lei Casilao/RF, GMA Integrated News

MPBL hands Michole Sorela lifetime ban, P200K fine for punch on Jonas Tibayan

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has handed Michole Sorela a lifetime ban and a P200,000 fine for punching Jonas Tibayan during the game between the Mindoro Tamaraws and GenSan Warriors on Monday. The incident occurred at the 7:33 mark of the third quarter, when Sorela landed a hard punch to Tibayan's face, sending him crashing to the floor before being stretchered off the court. GenSan's Sorela was slapped with a disqualifying foul, while Tibayan was rushed to an ambulance and later diagnosed with a concussion, a broken lip, a bleeding jaw, and missing tooth. Mindoro eventually won the game with Bambam Gamalinda leading the 76-72 victory. "Upon review of the footage of the incident from last night's game between the Mindoro Tamaraws and the GenSan Warriors, the MPBL has meted a lifetime ban on GenSan player Michole Sorela," MPBL said in a statement. "A P200,000 fine has also been slapped on Sorela for the punch that left Mindoro's Jonas Tibayan with a broken jaw and concussion." MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes condemned Sorela's actions, describing it as one of the worst incidents he has witnessed in the sport. "We condemn the incident and the MPBL won't tolerate such actions. I've seen the worst (in basketball) and this is one of them. The league has the full authority to impose sanctions on this deplorable behavior," Duremdes said. GMA Integrated News has reached out to Sorela for his side and will update the story when it is available. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
