AJ Edu admits Gilas Pilipinas still adjusting to life without Kai Sotto
That was on full display during their friendly match against the Macau Black Bears on Monday, where the Filipinos rallied for a gritty 103–98 comeback win in front of their home crowd.
Usual suspect Justin Brownlee was in his element in his first game back for the flag, dropping a game-high 32 points on 5-of-7 shooting from downtown and collecting 15 rebounds, five assists, one steal, and a block.
Brownlee, though, didn't lack support with his teammates stepping up in the 21-point fightback.
Dwight Ramos churned out 19 points, four rebounds, six assists, two steals, and one block while Edu made his presence felt on the paint with 15 markers and three boards.
Kevin Quiambao chipped in 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists while Scottie Thompson and CJ Perez finished with 10 and seven markers to rally the Philippines from a double-digit deficit.
"[Coach Tim said] nothing specific [at the halftime break], he just knows we're better than that, that first half wasn't us," Edu said.
"He just wanted us to be who we are, who we've been preparing to be."
Despite the win, AJ Edu acknowledged that Kai Sotto's absence leaves a significant void, but stressed that the team is ready to rise to the challenge in the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The 7-foot-3 Sotto was ruled out for the tournament after sustaining an ACL injury while suiting up for Koshigaya in the Japan B. League earlier this year.
?"It's still an adjustment. Kai is such an important piece, especially to the way we play in the triangle," Edu added.
"But we're gonna have to make do without him for now and everyone decides to step and tonight, you saw how many people stepped up and we just gotta keep that going until Kai comes back."

Team Liquid sends Onic Indonesia home to punch MSC Grand Finals ticket
Team Liquid continued its dream run in the 2025 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid-Season Cup, booting Onic Indonesia with a 3-1 win in their heavyweight semifinals showdown on Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Philippine bets now head to the finale showdown against no less than reigning MSC champions Selangor Red Giants (SRG) of Malaysia in a best-of-seven duel on Saturday at 7 p.m. (Manila time). It was a collective effort for the Filipinos with jungler Karl "KarlTzy" Nepomuceno (Hayabusa) and gold laner Kiel "Oheb" Soriano (Harith) both unleashing unblemished KDAs to lead the Game 1 romp. Onic kept Game 2 tight with mid laner SANZ making the most out of his Yve pick, sniping Oheb (Granger) and Jaypee "Jaypee" Dela Cruz (Hylos) during the crucial 25th-minute clash that also resulted in two more Team Liquid casualties. But even with only mid laner Alston "Sanji" Pabico left alive, Team Liquid pulled off a gutsy tower lock with the help of the Lord to secure a 2-0 series advantage for the Cavalry. Onic, though, would turn things around in Game 3 after a surprise Estes pick for Kiboy as the Indonesian champions remained alive. Sanji then took over late in Game 4 after his masterful plays on Zhuxin that led to a pivotal five-man wipeout for Onic Indonesia, steering the Philippines to yet another finals stint. "Of course, the number one is the love for the game and having fun, that's the more important thing to me right now. I'm having fun in playing, that's what keeps me motivated," KarlTzy, who has yet to capture an MSC title despite an accomplished professional career, said. "For me, I don't have anything with SRG but I wanna beat coach Arcadia." Team Liquid will now look to dethrone SRG, which earlier eliminated another Philippine representative in Onic Philippines with a nail-biting 3-2 victory. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

NBA champion Isaiah Joe visits Manila
An NBA champion is in the Philippines. On Friday, Isaiah Joe of the Oklahoma City Thunder talked to the media before interacting with fans at the NBA Store in Mandaluyong. Joe is coming off his first NBA title as the Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals last June. "You definitely have to see it to believe it. The fact that I've touched down here and I'm getting to see it is definitely amazing," Joe said about the Filipinos' love for basketball. Joe talks about the Philippines' love for basketball: You definitely have to see it to believe it... It's definitely amazing. It exceeds what people are saying. @gmasportsph — JK Carandang (@jk_carandang) August 1, 2025 "It actually exceeds what people say... Once you live through it and actually experience it, it's like wow, this is real." Last season, Joe posted averages of 10.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. Asked if the Thunder can make another run for the title, Joe said they need to be hungrier than last season. "We have to be hungry, even more hungry than we were last season. I understand that there's a target on our backs. Nobody wants us to repeat. So have a zero-zero mindset that none of this that happened in the past carries over. Everything's new, it's a new slate," he added. Joe, 49th overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft, will also be holding activities in the Philippines this weekend. NBA star Ja Morant is also in the Philippines and showcased his talent at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. —GMA Integrated News

Gilas Pilipinas held its first practice in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas on Friday shared photos of the national team's training session. The practice came just hours after landing in Saudi Arabia. "I'd like to get some practice time with June Mar. It's really important that we have to adjust to his presence," head coach Tim Cone said.
