You Can Buy Some Rare and Weird Vehicles From the Klairmont Museum As It Closes Forever
If you're a Midwesterner and a fan of classic cars, the name Larry Klairmont might ring a bell. However, you may not be aware that he passed in 2021, leaving his namesake auto museum in Chicago in the hands of his partner. This fall, it's closing for good, and the hundreds of remaining cars, scooters, motorcycles, and other automotive oddities are all headed to auction in September.
Klairmont had an eye for the unique and collectible, and as is the case with many museums, this one began as overflow storage for the car-buying habits of its 'curator.' He turned a successful cleaning business into a small real estate empire, putting him in a position to acquire the space he needed to store his four-wheeled curiosities. Eventually, the collection grew to more than 300 cars. As of 2017, Larry and his wife (who managed it) said it was the largest collection on display anywhere in the Midwest.
The sale listing caught our attention after Mercedes Streeter posted about it on the Autopian . Having visited the museum herself, she had some great photos from the msueum floor, too.
While the majority of the collection consists of what I would consider established vintage staples (plenty of vintage muscle and the like), there are a few noteworthy exceptions. Mecum
Maybe he liked superhero cars, or maybe he just knew they'd generate buzz with potential visitors, but either way, Klairmont managed to stash away a few iconic TV and movie replicas, including both Keaton- and West-era Batmobiles, a 'Black Beauty' Imperial, and a Mystery Machine.
But if you ask me, the crown jewel in this collection is much newer than any of those. Klairmont somehow got his hands on Lincoln's wild, Aston-Martin-powered Continental Concept Sedan from 2002—the year I graduated from high school. Here it sits, hiding an Aston V12 under the hood and displaying its full set of custom luggage for all to see.
This thing is just insanely cool, and I'm not the only one on staff who thinks so:
You can browse all the 'Larry's Legacy' lots at Mecum; the auction itself takes place September 19-21, just a week after the museum closes its doors for good.

NASCAR Rumors: Top Prospect ‘Likely' to Race Full-Time in Xfinity Series for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2026
Denny Hamlin signed a two-year contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing to continue his Hall of Fame career in the No. 11 car. While there is currently no clear succession plan in place for Hamlin's seat, developments are underway that could set the stage for one of the top NASCAR prospects to eventually take over. Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports ranked Brent Crews third among the best NASCAR prospects right now. He also noted that the 17-year-old is 'likely' to race full-time in 2026 with Joe Gibbs Racing in the Xfinity Series. 'Crews has two wins and a second in five ARCA national series starts. He also has one top 10 in three truck starts. He'll likely race full time in Xfinity next season at Joe Gibbs Racing after he turns 18 in March. Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports on Brent Crews Related: Crews debuted in the Truck Series in 2025 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, finishing 22nd and taking 8th in Stage 2. About a month later, he placed eighth at Lime Rock. It's a big leap for such a young driver, as even Connor Zilisch was older at 19 when he became a full-time Xfinity driver. It would be quite the jump for the teenager to move to the Xfinity Series next season after appearing in just three Truck races this year. Even Connor Zilisch, who turned 19 years old in July, was older when he became a full-time Xfinity driver this season. Related: The report from Pockrass came just days after Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic highlighted Crews as a potential successor to Hamlin to drive the No. 11 car in the 2028 season. However, the future Hall of Famer has said he could race a bit longer if NASCAR changes the championship format to three races instead of one. With Zilisch moving up to the Cup Series next season to drive full-time for Trackhouse Racing, there will be even more attention on Crews as potentially the top prospect in the Xfinity Series. However, there's still a chance that Corey Heim gets a full-time spot with an Xfinity team in 2026 after dominating the Truck Series this season. NASCAR: Austin Hill Doubles Down on Defense of Indianapolis Incident After Return from Suspension
NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Austin Hill is returning from his one-race suspension on Saturday for his actions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Pennzoil 250. Now two weeks removed from his incident with Aric Almirola, Hill is doubling down on his proclaimed innocefnce. Speaking to Dustin Albino of Hill defended his move at Indy. Coming off a one-race suspension, he explained that what happened was 'fully unintentional' and he would've done it at a different act if he wanted to turn Almirola intentionally. Related: 'I know that when I go to my grave way down the road that it wasn't done on purpose. From my standpoint, it was a full racing incident, full racing deal. I pleaded my case to NASCAR and everyone. I told [Peterson] everything that went down, showed him the SMT data, showed him that [Creed] and I were together before making contact with [Almirola]. From my standpoint, it was fully unintentional. It wasn't one of those lose your mind moments and turn to the left. I feel like I'm a smarter racer than that. If I was mad about him getting into the back of me, I would have waited until Turn 1 and shipped him like he shipped me in Turn 3. That would have been it.' Austin Hill on the moment at Indianapolis Motor Speedway With eight laps to go in the Pennzoil 250, Almirola's car moved Hill up the race track and the No. 21 car saved it before Turn 4. Once Hill saved it, avoiding a collision with the wall, the front driver's side turned and right hooked Almirola, sending the No. 19 turning and crashing nose-first into the wall. Almirola's day was immediately over and NASCAR officials parked him on pit lane for a five-lap penalty for reckless driving. As he sat in his pit stall, with the five-lap penalty having no real consequence because the car was heavily damaged, Hill cursed out NASCAR on the radio. Austin Hill stats (): 650 points, 3 wins, 12 top 10s, 9 top 5s, 3 DNFs, 287 laps led, 9.048 average starting position, 13.095 average finishing position Related: Hill and team owner Richard Childress have adamantly defended the move as an unintentional act, despite footage showing Hill's gloves turn the wheel to right hook Almirola after the car was already saved. Given Hill's history of reckless driving, including this season, NASCAR determined his actions warranted a one-race suspension. Far costlier than the one-race suspension is what happened because of the new NASCAR rules implemented this season. Because Hill's waiver to be granted a spot in the playoffs for missing a race was granted, he had to forfeit all of his playoff points (21, third-most in Xfinity Series) and he's ineligible for any playoff points during the remainder of the regular season. While many NASCAR fans were displeased that Hill received the waiver, it was always the expectation that it would be granted. However, the loss of his playoff points and the fact that he'll start with 0 points when the playoffs begin will very likely prevent him from winning the Xfinity Series championship in 2025.
