London-bound Air India Boeing 787 carrying 242 people crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon, killing all on board save one, in one of the worst such incidents in the country's aviation history. Ahmedabad police said some 265 bodies were brought to the civil hospital. It wasn't clear if this included fatalities on the ground. The airline hadn't provided a final figure on casualties at press time. Vishwaskumar Ramesh, who was in seat 11A, survived and was being treated at a hospital. The plane turned into a fireball after going down, laden as it was with fuel. Home minister Amit Shah said the temperatures were so high due to the burning fuel that there was no chance to save anyone, except for the sole survivor.'The number of those killed will be officially released by the authorities after DNA test and identification of the victims,' Shah said. The only relief is that one person survived, he said.Videos showed the plane losing altitude in the moments it was airborne before falling inside the campus of state-run BJ Medical College and going up in flames. The aircraft was carrying about 125,000 litres of fuel for the non-stop flight. A portion of the Dreamliner's tail could be seen embedded in the building's roof.Shah said the process of collecting DNA samples from the bodies had been completed. 'The Forensic Science Laboratory and National Forensic Sciences University in Gujarat will conduct DNA tests of the victims,' he said. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said the pilots had sent a Mayday call to air traffic control (ATC) but there was no response from them thereafter. AI 171, which left Ahmedabad at 1:38 pm, was bound for Gatwick airport. It was carrying 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, Air India said. The plane struck the top of the dining area of the BJ Medical College hostel, killing students. More than 100 bodies had been brought to the local government hospital for autopsies, the Ahmedabad police said.Air India was taken over by the Tata Group in January 2022.The flight which crashed Thursday was under the command of captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a pilot with 8,200 hours of flying experience, and first officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 hours.Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu expressed his condolences and assured swift action.'We are on highest alert. I… have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action,' he posted on X. 'Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site.'The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) confirmed that 'the aircraft fell on ground immediately after departure' and that a detailed investigation has been initiated.Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the carrier had despatched a support team to Ahmedabad.'I know that there are many questions and I will not be able to answer them all. But I do want to share the information that we have at this time. Air India flight AI 171, operated with a Boeing 787-8 aircraft travelling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, has been involved in an accident after take-off,' he said. 'Investigations can take time. But anything we can do, we are doing. We know that many people are concerned for the welfare of their loved ones.'Tata Sons chairman N Chandraekaran said that the primary focus would be on supporting all the affected people and their families.'We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted,' he said.As rescuers struggled to find survivors in the charred wreckage and pull out the injured, many of them with grievous burns, officials tried to assess the human magnitude of the disaster. The search was also on for the aircraft's black boxes–the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder–for clues to understand what happened in the last crucial moments. The 11-year-old aircraft could be seen from miles away, losing altitude rapidly and combusting in a fiery blaze that sent plumes of thick black smoke spiralling in the air.The aircraft had climbed just about 600-800 feet before plummeting to the ground almost immediately, aviation sources said.Eyewitnesses in Ahmedabad said the blaze was so intense that it led to several multi-storey buildings being burnt, trees singed and cars damaged. One image showed the snout of the plane crashing through the top floor of a building that appeared to be the dining area of the hostel for nurses and doctors.Elsewhere too, there were scenes of devastation with mangled metal, tangled wire and smoke rising from the burning embers.Britain's King Charles III said he and his wife, Queen Camilla, were "desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning.'"Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones,' according to the statement issued by Buckingham Palace.

DNA samples of pilot's kin taken from Powai; families of others head to Guj

Mumbai: As the process of identifying bodies of victims in the Air India 787-8 Dreamliner plane crash begins, families of the victims in Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where a majority of the cabin crew lived, are faced with the hard task of retrieving the remains of their loved ones by matching DNA samples. These samples are needed as some bodies have been charred beyond recognition. On Friday, govt authorities started reaching out to families in Mumbai and MMR, whose members are unable to travel to Ahmedabad, to collect their samples within their homes. Authorised representatives from a medical laboratory came to collect DNA samples from the family of deceased pilot Sumeet Sabharwal at his residence in Powai's Jal Vayu Vihar on Friday. Sabharwal's father, who is 82, and his sister, who has arrived from Delhi, are holding up stoically. In Malad, the brother of deceased British national Javed Ali Syed travelled to Ahmedabad to seek the remains of his family of four who died. In Goregaon East, Oberoi Esquire building, where cabin crew member Aparna Mahadik lived, shut its doors to mediapersons. Mahadik (35), a relative of NCP MP Sunil Tatkare, was a native of South India. She was married to Amol, also a pilot from Ratnagiri district, whose family is settled in Mumbai. Little is known about another deceased crew member Shraddha Dhavan, although she is believed to have lived in Mulund. In Juhu Koliwada, the parents of Saineeta Chakravarti, Air India stewardess, were unable to travel due to age and emotional stress. Saineeta's maternal aunt, though, departed for Ahmedabad to assist in the identification process through DNA verification. In Panvel, relatives of crew member Maithili Patil (23) recalled how she had taken an interest in flying since childhood. Hours before taking off on Thursday, she had spoken to her mother saying she "will call back soon", but now her mother's wait will never end, they said. Woman falls into uncovered stormwater channel near Pune's Navale Bridge, found dead in nullah close to Warje

1 2 3 Pune: A 64-year-old woman from Phursungi was swept away by water in an overflowing nullah near Navale Bridge in the Narhe area during the heavy rain on Thursday night. Police on Friday said the woman fell into the overflowing stormwater channel while crossing the road around 11.30pm and was carried away by the strong water current into the nullah, located a few metres away. A fire brigade team found the body of the woman, identified as Shobha Mahimane, after searching the area for over 15 hours. Police said the stormwater channel, located between the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass and the service road, was overflowing because of heavy rainfall. The woman failed to spot the channel while crossing the road and fell into it. Three people present nearby tried to rescue her. After failing in their effort, one of them alerted the police control room about the accident. Pradip Khedekar, an official of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s fire brigade involved in the search, told TOI: "Her body was found near the Warje crematorium, where the nullah merges with the river, almost 4-5km from the accident spot. Earlier in the day, we had found her footwear and clothes." Rahul Khilare, inspector (Crime) at the Bharti Vidyapeeth police station, told TOI that the woman had arrived from Kolhapur with some relatives in a car after attending a wedding. She was dropped by the relatives at Narhe. They had told her to stay overnight in another relative's house in Katraj, instead of travelling all the way to Phursungi because of heavy rain. He said, "She was trying to cross the highway and reach the service road to find an autorickshaw when the accident occurred. " Khilare said the police found her cellphone found near the stormwater channel. "We got her daughter's number from the phone. We called her daughter, informed her about the incident and ascertained the identity of the deceased." The fire brigade department received over 20 emergency calls related to tree collapses during Thursday's rain and strong winds. In one such incident in Pashan, a tree fell on a multi-purpose vehicle, causing significant damage to the car. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . AI 171 flight black box recovered from roof top of mess

Ahmedabad: The authorities probing the crash of London-bound flight AI 171, recovered the aircraft's black box on Friday, more than 28 hours after the the flight crashed shortly after take-off, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. The black box, which includes the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), was found on the rooftop of a hostel building at BJ Medical College in the Meghaninagar. The aircraft crashed into the hostel premises on Thursday afternoon, minutes after departing from Ahmedabad airport. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) confirmed the discovery, stating, "The black box was found on the rooftop of mess building." Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced the recovery of the black box on social media, adding that it would significantly help in determining the cause of the accident. The Ahmedabad-London Air India flight was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Among the victims was former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani. The sole survivor, Vishwaskumar Ramesh, remains under medical care with non-life-threatening injuries. The AAIB launched an investigation, with over 40 Gujarat govt officials supporting the ministry of civil aviation teams at the site. Sector-1 joint commissioner of police Neeraj Badgujar and DCP Zone-4 Kanan Desai confirmed the black box recovery during a coordinated search and rescue operation. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) found the aircraft's Emergency Locator Transmitter on Thursday night. The cockpit voice recorder was located later during the search. Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad city police registered a case of accidental death at the Meghaninagar police station and began investigation. According to police, the first call about the crash and fire was received at 1.44 pm on Thursday. The crash occurred at the Old IGP Campus, which houses residential blocks for MBBS students and resident doctors from BJ Medical College, affiliated with the Civil Hospital. Officials said most passengers and crew were charred beyond recognition. Their remains were transported to the Civil Hospital. The fire also resulted in casualties among residents of the hostel buildings. However, the govt is yet to reveal those figures. Central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), visited the crash site on Friday. While foul play has not been ruled out, the focus remained on gathering flight data and evidence to understand the technical and human factors that resulted in the crash.
