Marcos to Filipinos: Protect our liberty; ‘apathy' is freedom's enemy
MANILA: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr (pic) on Independence Day said that freedom must be defended and upheld, warning that its greatest enemy is 'apathy' toward national issues.
In his speech during the 127th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence at Quirino Grandstand on Thursday (June 12), Marcos also paid tribute to the nation's forefathers who fought for freedom.
'From their sacrifices, the Republic of the Philippines gradually emerged,' he said.
'Today, we can freely express our thoughts without fear and pursue our desires without avoidance. In the New Philippines, sharing one's opinion is not a crime, much less is criticism a wrongdoing. On the contrary, it is what gives life and lustre to our democracy,' he added.
Marcos stressed that freedom and democracy — like love for one's homeland — must be nurtured, protected, and fought for.
'Because the true enemy of freedom is apathy—apathy to the cries of the people, apathy to the condition of our fellow citizens, apathy to the welfare of our nation,' he added.
As a public servant himself, Marcos urged all government officials not to take the public's trust for granted.
'From broken bridges and roads to expensive food and power shortages, the people long for genuine action and service. The solution lies in improving the quality of life for everyone,' he said.
'We must hasten our response to the needs of our fellow citizens, raise the quality of public service, and correct our shortcomings,' he added. 'Let us hold accountable not only those who abuse their power but also those who fall short in their duty to serve.'
Marcos also said that fake news and misinformation can erase one's way of life, culture, and value system.
'Endless lies—false news and misinformation—are the plagues of our freedom,' he said.
'It is also disheartening that some of our fellow citizens continue to push false beliefs—not for the good of the Filipino people, but to serve the interests of others,' he added.
He then called on Filipinos to always choose honesty, even when no one is watching, and to take a stand, especially when wrongdoing occurs.
'Let us honour this day not just by remembering the sacrifices of our forefathers. We must live with the same courage and love of country; for freedom is not just something that we inherit but a right that we must protect every single day,' he said.
He also reminded the public that 'freedom is fleeting,' and it should be cherished every day.
Marcos led the celebration of the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence in a ceremony held at Rizal Park.
He spearheaded the flag-raising at the Independence Flagpole and the wreath-laying at the Rizal National Monument, followed by the Parada ng Kalayaan 2025, which highlighted key historical events that shaped the nation's path to independence.
Simultaneous flag-raising ceremonies were also conducted at various historical sites, including the Dambanang Emilio Aguinaldo in Cavite, Barasoain Church Historical Landmark in Malolos City, Bulacan, Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine in San Juan City, and the Andres Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City.
In his Independence Day message earlier in the day, Marcos urged Filipinos to value the nation's heritage by protecting their rights and freedoms and using them to uplift and safeguard others.
'So, let us continue to bear the vigor of our ancestors as we defend our nation against those who seek to diminish the strength of our people,' he added. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Four Filipinos in Israel hurt after Iran's airstrikes, says Philippines govt
Israeli Iron Dome air defence system fires to intercept missiles over Tel Aviv, Israel, early Sunday June 15, 2025. Four Filipinos are reported hurt following the attacks. -- AP Photo/Ohad Zwigenberg MANILA (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN): Four Filipinos in Israel were hospitalised following Iran's airstrikes, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Sunday. DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said that the Philippine Embassy in Israel is currently checking on the conditions of the four Filipinos. "The four are in the hospital in Rehovot, Israel (about 30 minutes from Tel Aviv), according to the PH Ambassador. But they are not in critical condition,' De Vega told in a message. The two Middle East countries are caught in escalating conflict which saw them exchanging airstrikes over the past few days. Israel targeted Iran's nuclear and military sites on Friday after US President Donald Trump warned of possible 'massive conflict in the region.' Iran also fired ballistic missiles at Israel in a counter-strike on Friday. De Vega also said that the conflict has brought 'mostly psychological trauma' for some Filipinos in Israel. "Iran has no reports of injured or affected Filipinos,' De Vega added. In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Philippine Embassy in Israel reported that it extended help to a Filipino whose house was affected by missile strikes. 'They were safe from harm because they were inside the bomb shelter or mamad when the missile landed,' the post read in Filipino. The embassy also urged Filipinos in Israel to stay close or seek shelter or mamad for their safety. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Manila eyes safety of Filipinos in Iran and Israel after military escalation
A man takes a picture of a building damaged in an Israeli strike on Tehran on Friday, June 13, 2025. Israel hit about 100 targets in Iran on June 13, including nuclear facilities and military command centres and killing senior figures including the armed forces chief and top nuclear scientists. -- Photo by Atta KENARE / AFP MANILA (Bernama-PNA): The Philippines is closely monitoring developments in Iran following Israeli military strikes on Tehran, as concerns mount over possible retaliation and wider regional instability. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) recorded 30,742 Filipinos residing in Israel and at least 1,180 in Iran, many of them married to Iranian nationals, the Philippines news agency reported, according to official data. Philippine authorities said contingency measures are being discussed, including the issuance of new travel advisories. "We are discussing it and awaiting the update from our embassy in Tehran,' Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega said in a message to reporters on Friday. In a separate television interview, De Vega said Filipinos in need of help may contact the Philippine embassies in Tehran or Tel Aviv. "Our foreign service posts will assist them. It's just more complicated in Iran, as some Filipinos who are now Iranian citizens may face restrictions on leaving the country imposed by their spouses,' he said on Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon. Tensions spiked on Friday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the launch of "Operation Rising Lion,' a military campaign aimed at neutralising what he described as an imminent threat from Iran. He said the strikes would continue "for as many days as it takes' to safeguard Israel's security. On Friday, the Israel Defence Forces announced that several senior Iranian military officials, including the Iranian Armed Forces chief of staff and the commanders of the Revolutionary Guard Corps and Emergency Command, were killed in the strikes. - Bernama-PNA
