Saints trade DT Saunders to Jaguars for C Fortner following preseason game, AP sources say

Washington Post17 hours ago
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two-time Super Bowl champion defensive tackle Khalen Saunders was traded from New Orleans to Jacksonville hours after the teams played a preseason game Sunday, two people familiar with the deal said.
The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity and said the teams agreed to swap Saunders for center Luke Fortner. The teams played to a 17-all tie in the Superdome earlier in the day. The trade was expected to become official once Saunders and Fortner pass physicals, the people said.

NFL Top 100: See where Philadelphia Eagles rank on the 2025 list

Coming off a Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles have no shortage of talent. That means the Birds likely will have plenty of players represented on the 2025 NFL top 100, an annual list that ranks the top players in the league. The NFL has begun releasing the names as the 2025 season approaches with the Eagles set to kick off this year's opener against the Dallas Cowboys. While the list is not yet complete, Philly has already had numerous players named with the likes of quarterback Jalen Hurts and others likely to be added. Beginning on June 30, the NFL counts down the top 100 by naming 10 players each week. The top 10 will be announced on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. ET live on NFL Network. Here are the Eagles on the NFL Top 100 list so far: NFL Top 100: Which Eagles made the list? No. 29: A.J. Brown Brown, the Eagles top wide receiver, is the latest Bird to join the list after leading the team with 1,079 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games last season. Brown finished tied for the league-lead in 100-plus receiving yard games despite missing four contests last year. The receiver capped off his season with a touchdown to put the Eagles up 24-0 just before halftime of Super Bowl 59. In 2024, Brown was ranked 21st on the NFL Top 100 list. A.J. Brown injury update: What it means for opener as Eagles trade for Texans John Metchie. Eagles 53-man roster projection: After trade, these WRs should worry. Is 3rd QB on roster? No. 43: Jalen Carter The Eagles young star defensive tackle made the list after finishing last year with 4.5 sacks and a team-high 45 pressures, earning him second-team All-Pro honors in just his second season. At 23 years old, he also became the youngest defensive tackle to make the Pro Bowl in franchise history. His most memorable highlight was his sack against Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford with 1:14 left in the NFC Divisional round, securing the win. In the game, Carter had two sacks, two passes defensed and a forced fumble. No. 49: Quinyon Mitchell What a year for the rookie cornerback out of Toledo, who proved to be a lock-down defensive back for the Birds from Week 1 on. The No. 22 overall pick finished second in AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting while finishing with 12 passes defended in 16 games started. He was third in the NFL in forced incompletions (15) and third among all cornerbacks in yards allowed per coverage snap (0.8). In the postseason, Mitchell had four passes defended and two interceptions to ice playoff victories. No. 60: Cooper DeJean The rookie defensive back out of Iowa capped off his stellar season with one of the most memorable plays in Eagles' history — a 38-yard pick six against Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. The nickel back finished fourth in AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting despite missing time in training camp due to injuries. After being inserted into the starting lineup, DeJean helped transform the Eagles into one of the best defenses in the NFL. The 40th overall pick in the 2024 draft showed his toughest all season, including in his huge hit Week 14 hit on Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry. No. 69: Jordan Mailata The left tackle has gone from an unknown 7th round pick from Australia to one of the best all-around lineman in the league. The former rugby player was named second-team All-Pro in 2024, leading the NFL in Pro Football Focus offensive grade (96.9). Mailata, along with his fellow lineman, paved the way for an Eagles' rushing attack that set the NFL record with 3,866 yards in the regular and postseason. He also helped running back Saquon Barkley become just the ninth player in NFL history to reach 2,000 rushing yards. There's a $1 million prize and big names for 2025 US Open mixed doubles. Why are some people upset?

Grand Slam singles champions such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys will be playing for a little extra money — OK, a lot of extra money, by any standard: $1 million to the winning duo — and trying to get their hands on a trophy in the U.S. Open's overhauled mixed doubles tournament. The best of the best at doubles, meanwhile, are not so excited about what one of last year's mixed champions in New York, Sara Errani, labeled 'sad' and 'nonsense' in an interview with The Associated Press. She and Andrea Vavassori, who'll be defending their title, are the only true doubles team competing Tuesday and Wednesday at Flushing Meadows. A year ago, only two highly ranked singles players participated. 'It would be like if, at the Olympics, they didn't let the actual high jumpers participate, and instead had basketball players compete in the high jump because it's more 'interesting.' If you want to do that, I guess you can, but you can't award them medals,' Errani said. 'You can't have a Grand Slam doubles (trophy) and not let doubles players take part. ... You're excluding them from their sport. It's dishonest.' Who is playing in the 2025 U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament? The top seeds, based on their combined singles rankings, are Jessica Pegula, the 2024 U.S. Open runner-up, and Jack Draper, a semifinalist a year ago. He's onto his third partner after Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and former No. 2 Paula Badosa withdrew with injuries. Their initial opponents might be the most-anticipated pairing: five-time Slam champ Alcaraz and 2021 U.S. Open winner Emma Raducanu. Other teams include Sinner and 10-time major doubles champion Katerina Siniakova, Swiatek and Casper Ruud, Keys and Frances Tiafoe, Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka, Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina, Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils, Novak Djokovic and Olga Danilovic, and Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva. 'It's going to count as a real Grand Slam. The prize money is great,' said Fritz, the runner-up to Sinner in singles at Flushing Meadows a year ago. 'We are 100% there to try to win it.' Said Tiafoe: 'Seeing the prize money, everyone was like, 'We're going, no matter what.'' What is different about mixed doubles at the U.S. Open? What's different? Put plainly: everything. That includes the top prize of $1 million a year after Errani and Vavassori split $200,000. Even the rules are changing, with sets played to four games instead of six until Wednesday's final, no-Ad scoring, and match tiebreakers instead of a third set. There are 16 teams instead of 32. The matches were shifted from the latter stages of the U.S. Open, overlapping with singles, to before next Sunday's start of the main singles brackets. Half the field is based on singles rankings, and the other half was simply chosen by the U.S. Tennis Association. That's how the singles stars got involved. It's also why some say the whole thing is a bit silly. Gaby Dabrowski, a Canadian who owns two major championships in mixed doubles and earned the women's doubles trophy at the 2023 U.S. Open, tried to get into the field with Felix Auger-Aliassime, but they were not among the USTA's wild-card selections. 'Do I think it's a true mixed doubles championship? No. Do I think it could help the sport of doubles in the end? It could,' Dabrowski said, 'but not if you can't have any doubles players play in it.' Why are some players upset about the U.S. Open mixed doubles changes? Like Errani or Dabrowski, doubles players aren't thrilled about being excluded and losing out on a payday. They also think it's generally demeaning to doubles specialists — even if the USTA thinks this can help boost the popularity of doubles. 'When you get the biggest names playing doubles, it does bring a bit more attention to it,' said Joe Salisbury, a British player who's won two Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles and four in men's doubles, 'but I'm not sure it's good for the doubles event, because it's not really a proper event. It's just a two-day exhibition.' Tournament director Stacey Allaster objects to that sort of characterization. 'Let's be absolutely crystal clear: This is a Grand Slam championship. It is not an exhibition,' Allaster said. 'We're sympathetic to the doubles specialists who don't like this change. ... (But) we know that when fans see top players competing ... this is going to inspire more fans to not only attend but to play tennis, and it's ultimately going to grow the sport.'

Joe Flacco's first Browns stint, revisited: Stats, results from 2023

The Cleveland Browns have officially named Joe Flacco their Week 1 starter for the 2025 season, marking the veteran's first Week 1 start since 2022. But it's far from Flacco's first start for the Browns despite him joining them as a free agent this offseason. Flacco, 40, made five regular season starts and one playoff start for Cleveland in 2023, playing well enough to secure a playoff appearance for the Browns. He also started their one postseason game that year. After that season, Flacco won the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year award over heavy favorite and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. JOE FLACCO: Browns name 18-year veteran starting QB for Week 1 of 2025 NFL season Flacco parlayed that excellent stretch into a one-year stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. He appeared in eight games and started six of them to the tune of a 2-4 record with a 65.3% completion rate and 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions. USA TODAY Sports revisited the 18-year veteran's late-season cameo for the Browns in 2023 in honor of his being named the team's Week 1 starter this year. Here's a recap of Flacco's performance in 2023: Joe Flacco 2023 stats: How veteran fared in first Browns stint Flacco took over as the starter for the Browns in Week 13 of the 2023 season following a season-ending shoulder injury to Deshaun Watson and a concussion to then-Browns backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson. After losing his first start in Cleveland, Flacco ripped off four straight wins between Weeks 14 and 17 to secure a spot in the playoffs for the Browns by Week 18. In each of those four wins, the then-38-year-old passed for over 300 yards and threw for multiple touchdowns. Flacco and many of the Browns' starters rested for the season finale before heading to Houston to face the Texans in the wild-card round. The Super Bowl 47 MVP completed 73.9% of his passes for 307 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in Cleveland's 45-14 loss. Flacco's upcoming Week 1 start will be his first start for the Browns since that playoff game in Houston and his first Week 1 start since 2022 with the New York Jets.
