How Jupiter is growing: Wendy's on Indiantown Road to get torn down, rebuilt after 43 years

Yahoo24-02-2025
JUPITER — A Jupiter landmark built more than 40 years ago — when the town was about 50,000 residents smaller and much of Indiantown Road had only two lanes — is getting a makeover.
The red-and-brown Wendy's on Indiantown near Jupiter High School will be torn down and replaced with a modern, earth-toned version of the fast-food restaurant. Crews will also close its one-way entrance and build a dedicated driveway directly from Wendy's to Town Hall.
The Wendy's was built in 1982, before two members of the Town Council were born. The council prohibited fast-food restaurants in its area eight years later but allowed Wendy's to stay.
'That is a very old and tired building now,' said council member Andy Fore before he and his colleagues approved the renovation plans on Feb. 18. 'I like that this is getting replaced with something newer.'
How Jupiter is growing: Is apartment complex worth gain in workforce housing? Town Council candidates wary
A similar plan in 2017 to demolish the Wendy's and replace it with an updated building never came to fruition.
Mayor Jim Kuretski said the rebuilding of Wendy's represents a trend that may continue: older businesses along Indiantown Road updating their looks. Kuretski moved to Palm Beach Gardens in 1982 and then to Jupiter a decade later. At the time Wendy's was built, sections of Indiantown Road were only two lanes, he said. Traffic moved slowly.
'We ventured up to the Indiantown Road area and I said to my wife, 'We'd never move to a place that has traffic like this,' ' Kuretski, who is seeking reelection next month, said with a chuckle. 'From the moment I moved to Jupiter, I was looking for traffic solutions.'
The Wendy's opened five years before council member Cameron May was born. May, who also is running for mayor on March 11, remembers Indiantown Road as a small street lined with Australian pine trees while he was growing up in the 1990s. There wasn't development along it like what is there now, he said.
Craig McDonald, the agent for the project, said construction will take four months. The Wendy's team wants to start in May or June, with the goal of re-opening in October.
The new building will be around 400 square feet smaller with less seating inside. However, crews will add a new outdoor seating area so the new restaurant will have about the same capacity as the old, according to McDonald.
Crews will also reconfigure the parking and drive-through area to help drivers avoid getting stuck in parking spots when the pickup line grows long.

In an interview in January, McDonald told The Palm Beach Post his team will determine the cost of the project during a bidding process in April. The renovation is not a part of the company's new 'global next gen' design, but has a look to match the style of other newer buildings in Jupiter, he said.
The Wendy's will also get a new sidewalk that leads to the nearby bus stop and more landscaping. Crews also will bury the power lines on site. Its dumpster and cooler freezer area will be demolished, with the dumpster moved to another area shielded from view along Indiantown.
May said he wants the town to consider giving cash grants or tax breaks to the business owners with shops along the road to beautify their buildings. Kuretski said the town has a grant program for business owners and it hasn't had enough applicants lately.
'There's some updating that definitely needs to be done,' May said. 'This (project) is going to provide a nice aesthetically pleasing restaurant right there at the Town Hall campus.'

Economists doubt Trump outlook that US will sell 'so much' beef to Australia

WASHINGTON/CANBERRA/CHICAGO, July 25 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said the sell 'so much' beef to Australia after Canberra relaxed import restrictions on Thursday, but economists and traders said high prices and tight supplies make major American exports unlikely. Australia said it would loosen biosecurity rules for U.S. beef. The move will not significantly increase U.S. shipments, though, because Australia is a major beef producer and exporter whose prices are much lower, analysts said. U.S. companies export small quantities of beef to Australian buyers. They import much more in the form of lean beef used to make hamburgers, particularly as U.S. production has declined because of tight cattle supplies. U.S. beef prices set records this year after ranchers slashed their herds due to drought that burned up pasturelands used for grazing. The total herd size fell to 94.2 million head as of July 1, a record low for that date, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data on Friday. A ban on cattle imports from Mexico because of New World screwworm, a devastating livestock pest, and steep tariffs on Brazilian beef that are set to take effect on Aug. 1 could further tighten meat supplies, and require additional imports of Australian beef. 'We can't get enough beef in the U.S. right now, so we're bringing it in from Australia and Brazil,' said Dan Norcini, an independent U.S. livestock trader. 'We're not going to be selling anything significant to anyone.' Last year, Australia shipped almost 400,000 metric tons of beef worth $2.9 billion to the United States, with just 269 tons of U.S. product moving the other way. 'They have more cattle than people,' said David Anderson, an agricultural economist at Texas A&M University. 'That's why they export so much.' Different taste U.S. and Australian beef also taste different. Many Australians like the grass-fed beef raised there, not marbled beef from U.S.-raised cattle that are generally fed with grain, said Jerry Klassen, chief analyst for Resilient Capital in Winnipeg. He predicted the United States will not export substantial amounts of beef to Australia in the next five years. 'We just aren't in a position to export much beef to anyone, and the reality is Australia doesn't really have much need for U.S. beef,' said Karl Setzer, partner at Consus Ag. The barriers that remain to exporting significant volumes of U.S. beef to Australia appeared to be lost on Trump this week. 'We are going to sell so much to Australia because this is undeniable and irrefutable Proof that U.S. Beef is the Safest and Best in the entire World,' Trump said in a post on Truth Social. 'The other Countries that refuse our magnificent Beef are ON NOTICE.' Trump has attempted to renegotiate trade deals with numerous countries he says have taken advantage of the United States, a characterisation many economists dispute. 'For decades, Australia imposed unjustified barriers on U.S. beef,' U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a statement, calling Australia's decision a 'major milestone in lowering trade barriers and securing market access for U.S. farmers and ranchers.' Australian officials say the relaxation of restrictions was not part of any trade negotiations but the result of a years-long assessment of U.S. biosecurity practices. Canberra has restricted U.S. beef imports since 2003 due to concerns about bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. Since 2019, it has allowed in meat from animals born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S. but few suppliers were able to prove that their cattle had not been in Canada and Mexico. The U.S. sources some of its feeder cattle from the two neighboring countries. On Wednesday, Australia's agriculture ministry said U.S. cattle traceability and control systems had improved enough that Australia could accept beef from cattle born in Canada or Mexico and slaughtered in the United States. The decision has caused some concern in Australia, where biosecurity is seen as essential to prevent diseases and pests from ravaging the farm sector. 'We need to know if (the government) is sacrificing our high biosecurity standards just so Prime Minister Anthony Albanese can obtain a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump,' shadow agriculture minister David Littleproud said in a statement. Australia faces a 10% across-the-board U.S. tariff, as well 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum. Trump has also threatened to impose a 200% tariff on pharmaceuticals. Asked whether the change would help achieve a trade deal, Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell said: 'I'm not too sure.' 'We haven't done this in order to entice the Americans into a trade agreement,' he said. 'We think that they should do that anyway.'

Britain, Australia to sign agreement to build nuclear submarines

July 25 (UPI) -- Britain and Australia confirmed Friday that they would proceed with a $245 billion nuclear-powered submarine deal as part of a defense pact between the two countries and the United States -- despite Washington rethinking its involvement. Following a meeting, Australian Defense Secretary Richard Marles said he and British Defense Secretary John Healey would sign a 50-year cooperation treaty on Saturday to deliver an Australian fleet of submarines, powered by British nuclear reactors. Marles hailed the deal, part of a trilateral security pact signed in 2021, as the most significant U.K.-Australian treaty signed in the 124-year history of modern Australia. The AUKUS alliance, aimed at countering China's military rise in the Asia-Pacific, called for Australia to be armed with eight nuclear submarines, three repurposed from the United States' existing fleet and the remainder a new SSN-AUKUS submarine that Australia and Britain would build together. However, concerns were raised that the first U.S. submarines wouldn't be handed to Australia within the timeline of the early 2030s because U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reviewing the Biden administration-brokered AUKUS and the U.S. submarine pipeline was behind time. Healey said they welcomed Hegseth's review as a chance for the new administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to "renew their commitment," which he said he fully expected to happen. Marles said last month that he was "very confident" the United States would remain in AUKUS because of its strategic benefit to all three countries. The pact came into force three days before Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States in January, triggering a review to ensure it is a fit with his "America First" policy. In a meeting in Singapore in June, Hegseth told Marles that Australia should increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP. Elbridge Colby, the U.S. defense official carrying out Hegseth's review, has said AUKUS could compromise national security if the United States were to begin selling its Virginia-class submarines to Australia in the early 2030s, as per the original agreement. Neither Healey nor Marles would say whether the two countries would go it alone with building the submarines if the United States opted to withdraw. The Australia-U.K. treaty encompasses a comprehensive framework to develop the necessary infrastructure and workforce in Australia to build, operate and support the submarine program, with the deal providing a boost to British exports of more than $26 billion by 2050. "Through the treaty, we are supporting high-skilled, well-paid jobs for tens of thousands of people in both the U.K. and Australia," said Healey. Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Euan Graham said the new treaty was not sending a message to the Trump administration but was "more of a reflection that AUKUS has always been a 3-way arrangement, and that the U.K.-Australia side of the triangle is vital to its success." He said the program would also produce economies of scale, allowing Britain's Royal Navy to increase its nuclear fleet from seven to 12 submarines. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation.
