EPIC 2025 Outdid Itself with Record-High 1,200 Applications
Hong Kong SAR--(Newsfile Corp. - July 17, 2025) - EPIC 2025, organised by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), has reached new heights with the 9th edition seeing an influx of global applications hitting close to 1,200, entering from more than 70 economies, setting a record for the I&T arena gaining global recognition, and regional representation for the development of I&T ecosystems.

With the application period open from March to June, the response to participating in one of Asia's largest innovation arenas has been taken by storm. Where global startups with solutions in Digital Health Tech, FinTech, and Green Tech will be seen at 60-second pitches to get through to an unprecedented US$100M targeted investment funding and US$240,000 cash prizes, backed by 20 global financial and corporate partners that manage collectively of an AUM close to US$100B and operate across Asia, Europe and North America.
Monetary payoff aside, business matching and investment opportunities, as well as an extensive experience will be made available throughout EPIC Week--putting innovative solutions on display for potential investors and corporate decision makers with Tech Spotlight, and pulling a glimpse into the vast opportunities of the cities with Greater Bay Area Exploration guided tour--the series of highlights entailing complimentary flight and accommodation sponsored (*T&C applies) to contestants overseas, are set to enable mid- to late-stage startups to grow from indigenous names to international labels.

Sony calls Tencent game ‘slavish clone' of Horizon in new lawsuit
Sony is suing Tencent to attempt to stop the release of Light of Motiram, which Sony describes as a 'slavish clone' of its Horizon series of games, as reported by Reuters. Light of Motiram was announced last year with a trailer featuring an aesthetic that's quite similar to the Horizon franchise — including huge robot animals and even a title font that resembles the Horizon games. In its complaint, Sony alleges that 'unlawful copying of the protected audiovisual elements of the Horizon games, as well as its deliberate adoption of a confusingly similar character mark, constitutes both copyright and trademark infringement that should be enjoined immediately.' According to the lawsuit, Tencent started developing Light of Motiram in 2023. At the Game Developers Conference in March 2024, Tencent allegedly pitched Sony on a proposal that would have its Aurora Studios subsidiary 'develop a Horizon sequel game under the requested license,' which Sony rejected. 'Apparently, Tencent was undeterred by SIE's refusal to license its Horizon intellectual property,' Sony says. According to the game's Steam page, Light of Motiram's developer and publisher is Polaris Quest. In the lawsuit, Sony alleges that 'Upon information and belief, Tencent Shanghai does business under the names 'Aurora Studios' and/or 'Polaris Quest.'' Sony says that it 'had discussions with Tencent' to informally try to 'resolve its concern that Light of Motiram violated its intellectual property rights.' However, Sony alleges that Tencent 'again sought to license the Horizon intellectual property,' to which it 'communicated clearly and unequivocally that it would not license the Horizon assets to Tencent, objected to Light of Motiram, and insisted that it be withdrawn.' Tencent didn't reply to a request for comment. This isn't the only high-profile lawsuit over allegedly similar video games. Last year, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Palworld-developer Pocketpair. Miss the Xperia Play? A new Android gaming phone is coming, and it slides like it's 2011

The phone was teased during a livestream, but no specs, images, or release date were revealed. The move follows the expiration of the sliding phone patent and comes amid several other AYANEO hardware announcements. AYANEO is branching out in an exciting way. At the end of a four-hour livestream packed with announcements, the company revealed it's working on its first smartphone, which will have a physical slider in a similar concept to the old Xperia Play. There's no release date, no specs, and no images of the actual device yet, but AYANEO teased the gaming phone concept with a few slides and slogans like 'you'll feel the difference' and 'the magic lies in the slide.' The announcement came in a segment called 'One more thing III,' which pretty much tells you how packed the event already was. AYANEO The company didn't show anything beyond a silhouette, but the implication is that this will be a gaming phone with physical controls that slide out — something we've been waiting to see since the Xperia Play or, more recently, the ANBERNIC RG Slide. That device launched soon after the patent for sliding phones expired, and AYANEO now seems to be following suit. AYANEO has been busy lately. Earlier in the same livestream, it showed off the dual-screen Pocket DS Android handheld, as well as a Game Boy-style vertical console and a new budget sub-brand called KONKR. The new phone feels part of a broader push into different form factors. It's not a huge leap, considering AYANEO already makes high-end Android handhelds. For now, there's not much to go on besides that it exists and is in development. But if the final product delivers, it could be a big deal for mobile gamers.
